Tyrone too good for dogged Cork as they book place in All-Ireland MFC semi-final
A blistering Tyrone first quarter display gave the Red Hand county enough of a cushion to confidently see off a dogged Cork fightback in an entertaining Electric Ireland All-Ireland MFC quarter-final at O'Moore Park in Portlaoise.
Sprinting out of the starting blocks, with the Rebels not knowing what had hit them, the Ulster champions were absolutely ruthless in the opening exchanges, building up an eight-point lead, 1-6 to 0-1, by the eleventh minute.
The goal arrived as early as the fourth minute, with Cork goalkeeper Rory Twohig making a fine save to deny impressive Tyrone wing-back Thomas Meenan after he was put through by Joel Kerr, but Cathal Farley was on hand to tap home the rebound from close range.
Entering the last ten minutes of the half, the gap was out to nine (1-9 to 0-3), and Keith Ricken's men were in serious danger of being submerged under the tide. However, belatedly raising their intensity levels, they surged back into proceedings.
Full-forward Ben Corkery Delaney was the undoubted catalyst for Cork's second quarter revival, firing over two points, before blasting home a brilliant goal in the 24th minute, after being fed by Donagh Flynn. The deficit was now three points, 1-9 to 1-6, but that was as close as it would get.
By the interval, with excellent centre-forward Peter Colton, full-forward Eoin Long, and wing-backs Meenan and Aodhán Quinn all making their presences felt, Tyrone ended up six points to the good, 1-13 to 1-7, heading into the second half.
Corkery Delaney continued his tour-de-force on the changeover, launching over a two-pointer and, as Tyrone lost their bearings for a spell, Flynn's 42nd minute point had Cork within four of their opponents, 1-15 to 1-11, and well in contention to attack the last quarter.
However, as is the sign of a well-drilled outfit full of self-belief, Tyrone quickly regained their composure, and their scoring touch, kicking six of the game's last seven points, to power on to the semi-finals with more than a bit to spare. They won't be easily stopped now.

Dooley leveller means share of spoils for Douglas and Kanturk
Premier SHC: Douglas: 0-21 Kanturk: 2-15 A draw wasn't what either side wanted after opening day defeats in the Cork Premier SHC, but in the end it was Douglas more thankful for a point after it took a late Ronan Dooley score to level matters in Castletownroche. Losses two weeks ago meant neither team had room for error and it showed in the first half in a nervy display where both teams struggled to gain a foothold. Douglas did lead by a point at half-time having played with a strong wind, but they looked in trouble when Kanturk banged in two quick goals to lead by four points in the closing stages. The city team showed character though with Cork senior hurler Shane Kingston playing an influential role in the comeback. It did look like they ran out of time, but four minutes into added time, Dooley popped up with a point from close range. Douglas, despite having a strong wind with them in the opening 30 minutes, were slow out of the blocks. A Colin Walsh point after 70 seconds got Kanturk up and running before the same player had a goal opportunity four minutes in after being set up by Lorcan O'Neill, but his effort didn't have enough power to beat Douglas goalkeeper Donal Maher. Quick-fire points from Shane Kingston and Conor O'Donovan were well worked scores for Douglas. But it was a scrappy opening with both teams guilty of some poor shooting. Picture: Howard Crowdy With the stakes high, both teams didn't get a consistent run going here, though Kanturk did land three of the next four points with Colin Walsh pointing and also having a say in the other scores, 0-4 to 0-3 to the Duhallow team after 15 minutes. The sides traded points in what was a first half short of quality even if the wind was causing havoc. Kanturk continued to shade it approaching the interval as they led 0-7 to 0-6 with two minutes to the break, but points from Joseph Harte and Shane Kingston (free) gave the city outfit a slender 0-8 to 0-7 half-time advantage. Wind-assisted Kanturk started the new half sluggishly with Douglas' Ronan Dooley splitting the posts. They possibly could have been further, but it didn't happen as Alan Walsh raised a white flag to leave the bare minimum in it. The teams swapped points as neither team could gain a foothold, 0-10 to 0-9 after 38 minutes. A Brian O'Sullivan boomer did tie up matters. No surprise that the sides shared the next four points, 0-12 each with a quarter of the game left. A minute later in a rare goal chance, Conor Kingston's goal-bound effort deflected out for a 65 which Shane Kingston converted. Douglas continued to have their noses in front, 0-15 to 0-14 until Kanturk grabbed the bull by the horns. The excellent Brian O'Sullivan goaled after 51 minutes after Colin Walsh played a key role and despite Douglas sub Daniel Harte landing his second point, the Duhallow team got their second goal seven minutes from time when Rory Shehan billowed the back of the net, 2-14 to 0-16. Three successive Douglas points from them a point behind that man Shane Kingston pointed to level the game a minute from time. A difficult free was converted by Sheahan edged Kanturk ahead and had chances to push further ahead. With time up, Dooley stepped up to rescue Douglas and make sure there was a share of the spoils. Mark Dowd to become new Roscommon manager
MARK DOWD has been selected as the new manager of the Roscommon senior football side. The move will be subject to ratification at the next county board meeting, with Dowd's backroom team to be announced in due course. Advertisement Dowd succeeds Davy Burke, who last June announced he had decided to step down at the end of his three-year term. Currently the manager of Roscommon Gaels, the Strokestown native was previously part of the management team when Roscommon won the All-Ireland Minor Championship in 2006. He also guided Ballaghaderreen to the 2012 Mayo Senior Football Championship title and coached the Roscommon U21 team to Connacht Championship glory in 2015. Dowd was part of the coaching setup for Roscommon's 2010 and 2019 Connacht Senior Championship triumphs, and he helped his home club, Strokestown, win the 2022 Roscommon Senior Championship. 'Mark has an outstanding track record at both club and county level, and he brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion for Roscommon football,' Roscommon GAA County Chairperson Brian Carroll said. 'We are confident that his leadership will help drive this team forward and build on the progress of recent years. 'I have had the pleasure of working with Mark on numerous occasions over the last 12 years, and I know the Roscommon Senior Football team is in safe hands going forward.'

Mark Dowd set to become new Roscommon manager
Mark Dowd has been named as Roscommon's new senior football manager, replacing Davy Burke. The current Roscommon Gaels manager was part of a management team that won an All-Ireland in 2006 with the county and was part of the backroom team for the senior side's Connacht titles in 2010 and 2019. Dowd also previously managed the county's Under-21 side, winning a Connacht title in 2015. Well thought of, Dowd was also part of the management team that won the Senior title in 2022 in Strokestown and brought the Gaels to a county final in 2024. His backroom team has not yet been announced, and his appointment is subject to ratification. Roscommon Chairman Brian Carroll said: 'We are delighted to welcome Mark Dowd as the incoming manager of the Roscommon Senior Football team. Mark has an outstanding track record at both club and county level, and he brings with him a wealth of knowledge, experience, and passion for Roscommon football.
