Rhyl Journal18-07-2025
All of the hot food units at the £12.6m food hall and market in Rhyl have now been leased, with just one - Salt & Pepper Box - still preparing to open.
Salt & Pepper Box (Chinese food) has replaced Kinn Kinn (Thai) and will be open imminently.
Kumo Ramen was replaced by Anarkali (an Indian food stall) who have been open since the launch of the market.
The donut unit opened on the launch weekend, though the operator of the unit has changed since the original proposal.

Aber Falls Distillery and Conwy Brewery took on retail units prior to opening day, and Baked & Loaded (Jacket Potatoes) and the sandwich shop will be opening imminently.
A spokesperson from Denbighshire County Council said: "Kumo Ramen and Kinn Kinn (Thai) made a decision to pull out of Queen's Market prior to the opening day.
"Kumo Ramen was replaced by Anarkali (Indian food stall), who have been open since day one. Kinn Kinn has been replaced by Salt & Pepper Box (Chinese food), who are currently setting up and will be open imminently.
"Signage for the new vendors is currently being installed.
"It would not be appropriate for us to comment on the reasons why they decided to pull out, but we are really pleased to see two high quality food vendors coming in to replace them."
The spokesperson confirmed that all traders have signed a 24-month licence, which is in line with the agreement that is in place with the operator of Queen's Market - Midland Events (Rhyl) Limited.
"Over time, there is always likely to be a certain amount of change in terms of the food and retail offer in Queen's Market," the spokesperson said.
"This is to be expected and should not be deemed as a negative.
"The donut unit opened during the opening weekend, although the operator of the unit has changed since the original proposal. Again, this is not unusual, and it certainly not a concern to the council or Midland Events (Rhyl) Limited.
"All of the hot food units are leased out, with only one (Salt & Pepper Box) still preparing to open.
"Aber Falls Distillery and Conwy Brewery took on retail units prior to opening day, and Baked & Loaded (Jacket Potatoes) and the sandwich shop will be opening imminently.
"The market has also recently signed up a Bubble Tea vendor, which means that there will be 100 per cent occupancy of the internal retail units within the building.
"We would like to thank everyone who visited and supported Queen's Market on what was an extremely successful opening weekend.
"We would like to thank the community for bringing the market to life, it was great to see so many people come through the doors."
The market, which also boasts a leisure space with shuffleboard, darts, football tables, a double-sided bar, booths to relax and watch TV, and a large flexible events space, opened on Thursday, July 10 at 10am.

British Steel's Chinese owners urged to exit 'with heads held high' over Scunthorpe site

The Chinese owners of British Steel should "exit with their heads held high", a Scunthorpe MP has said as the government and Jingye remain at loggerheads over the Scunthorpe site. It has been reported a search for a new owner has come to a halt because Jingye want millions to be paid to them in cash to complete the transfer. In April, the future of this site was hanging in the balance as owners Jingye said it wasn't financially viable . The government stepped in to take control of the steelworks to prevent the blast furnaces being permanently switched off. Jungye remains the official owners of British Steel after the government stopped short of fully nationalising the company - however ministers believe is worth effectively zero. Earlier this year Jingye rejected a £500m subsidy to support the switch to green steel production. It said it was losing £700,000 a day keeping the blast furnaces operational and claimed they were no longer viable. Since then negotiations have been taking place with the owners about the transfer of the site but there has not been any resolve. Sir Nic Dakin MP said the owners should "exit with their heads held high" and transfer the business to the Government for a nominal fee. In a statement he said: "I stand firm with the Government in protecting British Steel now and in the long-term. "The Government has been clear that legislating for nationalisation remains an option, but I urge Jingye to consider their position and exit the business with their heads held high. They should transfer the business to the Government for a nominal fee." "The sooner questions about the ownership of the business are put to rest the better." A spokesperson for the Department of Business and Trade said it is working with Jungye to "determine the best long-term sustainable future for the site."

New Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen managing day-to-day before setting targets

A stormy past few months has seen Wednesday hit with several EFL-imposed embargoes for financial breaches, including failing to pay players and staff on time in May, June and July. That led to the 15 first-team players still on the books at the club to boycott a behind-closed-doors friendly against Burnley, which came to light on the same day Pedersen was announced as Owls boss. 🎥 Watch our first in-depth interview with SWFC manager Henrik Pedersen#swfc — Sheffield Wednesday (@swfc) August 7, 2025 Pedersen is certain a repeat scenario would not unfold in their Sky Bet Championship curtain-raiser at Leicester on Sunday, although he was unwilling to think too much beyond the East Midlands trip. The Danish boss told the PA news agency: 'I think if I spoke about goal-setting – with 15 players right now – and say we will stay in the league or this or that, this is not where we are right now. 'Tomorrow, I will do everything with my staff to have the best (training) session for the players and then on Sunday, make the best possible game plan. This is where we are right now. 'Of course, I have an idea of how the club should look in the future. In my head, I know where we want to be but this is not interesting for the players right now. 'I think I have a really good relationship with the players. I'm convinced we have a group who are really looking forward to Sunday's game and will do everything they can for our club. 'How the players are handling this situation is not for everyone to do this, it's for special ones and they're doing a really special job at the moment.' Pedersen stepped up from assistant last week to replace Danny Rohl, who left the club by mutual consent after helping them avoid relegation in 2023-24 before overseeing a respectable 12th-place finish last season. Unable to sign or loan players for a fee until January 2027, Pedersen is working diligently to bump up the threadbare playing and non-playing numbers at Hillsborough and bring in individuals for free. Adding to the uncertainty is owner Dejphon Chansiri looking to offload the club but Pedersen, who says he speaks 'regularly' with the Thai businessman, has no regrets about committing to Wednesday. Pedersen said: 'What (Chansiri) said to me the last time we spoke is he will do everything he can to solve the problem as quick as possible. I think he'll do what he can. 'To be Sheffield Wednesday manager is an honour. I spoke with (other) clubs but I said to my wife 'it's really interesting but you know where my heart is'. 'My family love to stay here. My two boys love to be in the school where they are, they love to play football here and my wife loves to be here. When the club asked me to come back, I had no doubt. 'It's important (to look at) what can I control, what can I not control? Of course we need new players and new coaches, but right now it's not so easy just to find players and players and players. 'It's a tough environment right now because there are so many things (happening) from outside. But I have the biggest respect for my players and staff and how they are handling the situation.'
