EXCLUSIVE Reclusive 80s lead singer looks unrecognizable with new girlfriend in rare outing... can you guess who?

Daily Mail27-04-2025
Rock fans were in for a treat Thursday when one of the greatest frontmen in rock history made a rare appearance in Los Angeles.
The legendary vocalist, now 76, who fronted one of the most iconic bands of the '70s and '80s and scored eight multiplatinum albums, was all smiles as he stepped out for a grocery run at the upscale Erewhon market.
Wearing a Stanford T-shirt and casual shorts, the singer— once dubbed ' The Voice ' by Jon Bon Jovi thanks to his soaring range —looked nearly unrecognizable from his arena-rock days with Journey.
Adding to the surprise, Perry didn't show up solo—he arrived with rumored new flame Suzette Vaughn, a marriage and family therapist turning heads right beside him.
The sighting comes decades after the rock legend famously sang about a past love in one of his biggest solo hits Oh Sherrie.
So, can you guess who this iconic lead singer is?

If you guessed Steve Perry — you were Faithfully correct.
Little is publicly known about Perry's relationship with Vaughn.
However, one of the most significant relationships in his life was with psychologist Kellie Nash, who passed away from breast cancer in December 2012.
Before her death, Nash made the former Journey frontman—then 63—promise not to retreat from the world again.
'One night she said, "If something was to ever happen to me, promise that you won't go back into isolation, for I think it would make this all for naught,"' Perry recalled during a 2018 interview on CBS Sunday Morning.
'But I had to make the promise, and I said, "I promise."'
That promise became a turning point in Perry's life, ultimately leading to his emotional return to music after years out of the spotlight.
Perry left Journey twice—first in 1987, then officially in 1998.

After the Raised on Radio tour, he felt burned out and emotionally drained, so the band quietly went on hiatus.
He focused on solo work during this time, releasing For the Love of Strange Medicine in 1994.
In 1996, Journey reunited with Perry for the album Trial by Fire, but plans for a tour fell apart.
Perry injured his hip while hiking in Hawaii and hesitated to get surgery.

When the band pressured him to commit, he refused—and officially left Journey for good in 1998.
Since December 2007, Journey's lead singer has been Arnel Pineda, a former cover band vocalist from Manila, Philippines, discovered by guitarist Neal Schon through YouTube.
When the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in April 2018, it was Pineda—not Steve Perry—who performed their iconic 1981 hit Don't Stop Believin'.
Asked about it, Perry made his position clear: 'I'm not in the band,' he said simply to the New York Times, adding, 'It's Arnel's gig — singers have to stick together.'

Talking Heads frontman David Byrne engaged to much-younger girlfriend after nearly a decade of dating

Talking Heads frontman David Byrne revealed he is engaged to his much younger girlfriend Mala Gaonkar. The 73-year-old musician and Gaonkar, 55, have been dating for nearly a decade, after first meeting in 2016 while working on a production for The Makers series at Stanford Arts Institute. Byrne confirmed the happy engagement news in an interview with The Times, published on Saturday. While discussing his upcoming album, Who Is The Sky?, he referred to Gaonkar as his 'fiancée.' 'My fiancée will sometimes come at me with greasy hands, ready to smear my face. And at one point I thought, "What if I wake up and really looked younger?"' he told the publication. 'But there's a message, too. About how people judge us by the way we look. You learn a lesson you didn't expect at the start.'

Dark world of Matthew Perry 'Ketamine Queen' who gave star 'drug lollies' and ate caviar

Jasveen Sangha, known as the 'Ketamine Queen of Los Angeles,' has agreed to plead guilty to multiple drug charges tied to the death of Friends icon, Matthew Perry Jasveen Sangha, aka the ' Ketamine Queen of Los Angeles', has seen her lavish lifestyle come crashing down after the tragic death of Matthew Perry in 2023. The 42-year-old, who has dual citizenship with the US and the UK, agreed to plead guilty in relation to the Friends star's death, just weeks before her trial was due to begin. Sangha, who had previously denied the charges, was the final defendant out of five accused in connection with the Chandler Bing star's death to reach a plea deal. She has been behind bars since August of last year. Her trial had been scheduled for August 19, later pushed to September 23, but after her U-turn, Sangha is set to plead guilty to five federal charges. It comes after it was revealed the Hollywood resident could face decades in prison following her role in Perry's death, which was caused by the acute effects of ketamine. Before she ended up behind bars, after federal prosecutors called her Los Angeles home a "drug-selling emporium" and found dozens of vials of ketamine during a raid, the glamorous socialite was wrapped up in a very shady world - but always dressed to impress... Designer gear Online, Sangha appeared to live a lavish lifestyle - holidaying in high-end resorts in Tokyo and Mexico, wearing Chanel and Luis Vuitton gear, and partying with Hollywood's glitziest circles including former drug addict, Charlie Sheen. Photographs on her Instagram page show her wearing eye-wateringly expensive Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery as well as Louis Vuitton trainers and Chanel suits. One source, who claims to be gobsmacked by the drug dealing claims, told the Daily Mail: 'She's always in the nicest designer clothes.' 'Sangha's stash house' Texts revealed in Sangha's indictment claimed she would 'only deal with high end and celeb' clients and stored drugs at her North Hollywood home, dubbed 'Sangha's Stash house'. Sangha boasted a number of A-list pals in Tinseltown, mingling with celebrities, including troubled star, Perry. Ketamine lollipops As part of her deal with the Friends star on October 24, Sangha threw in 'ketamine lollipops as an 'add on' for his large ketamine order', the indictment against her states. After seizing her phone, police reportedly found footage of Sangha 'cooking' ketamine and conversations related to 'selling pressed methamphetamine pills and ketamine'. Perry was found dead in a back yard jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home in October 2023, with an examination finding his death was caused by the acute effects of ketamine. Feasting on caviar In February 2024, Sangha posted a photo of a plate piled with caviar from a private jet lounge at LAX airport. Also in the shot was a glass of chilled bubbly and a stack of plump blinis, perfect for the 'Ketamine Queen' to enjoy the mega-money delicacy, eaten by royalty and the rich and famous, with as she prepared to fly across the world... Private jets In another example of her lavish lifestyle, Sangha shared a snap of herself on a private jet on Instagram in front of a glass of champagne as she posed for a photo, looking delighted with life. Sporting an arm full of designer bracelets, she smiled for the photo as she settled down to travel in style. 5* holidays In November 2023, two weeks after Perry died, Sangha was seen quaffing lychee martinis on Instagram at the Mandarin Oriental hotel, in Tokyo, where suites cost nearly £1,500 a night. Four months later in February, she was sunning herself by a pool at a beachfront n Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and shared selfies drinking more cocktails. ‌ 'Play money, but don't be playing with my money,' she wrote in one of her captions after a source claimed Sangha was from a rich family. 'Wealthy family' Those close to Sangha told the Daily Mail they were 'completely shocked' that she could be involved in drug dealing because she came from a rich family, at the time of her arrest. Interior designer Clancy Carter, who knew Sangha since 2008, said: 'She has a family that cares for her. She has never been the type of person who needed money. 'She has property in the UK. She's always traveling and doing fun things with her family. I would never guess she would do something like this at all.'

Why I'd never date a man who carries a tote bag

I spot him immediately, sipping an oat milk matcha outside the West Hollywood Erewhon (a grocery store-cum-church, where people in Spandex genuflect at the altar of $19 'Goddess Smoothies'). He's plugged into something, has a book tucked under his arm, and – it goes without saying – a tote bag slung over his right shoulder. The props will vary, but Performative Male (PM) wouldn't be caught dead without his tote. If you're not yet familiar with the Performative Male, fear not: he'll be coming to a high street near you any day now. It's only ever a matter of time before anything doing the rounds in the United States – anything deserving of a full page in The New York Times ' Style pages – lands on our shores, and out here in Los Angeles, the summer of 2025 has been defined (and blighted) by two ubiquitous eyesores: Performative Males and Labubus. Sometimes, God help me, the PM will have a Labubu hanging from his New Yorker tote. Not that he's ever read The New Yorker. Or indeed Joan Didion, even though he'll be walking around with her The Year of Magical Thinking on display. He's probably not listening to anything on his EarPods, he doesn't even like matcha, and his glasses are non-prescription. Because that's the thing about this new social media archetype: everything about him is fraudulent. And maybe that, The New York Times suggests, partly explains his rise? We are, after all, living in a time of peak insincerity. It would be wrong to say that PM is completely empty, however. Because there is an agenda there, and that is to appeal to progressive women. 'He is,' explains The New York Times, 'in short, the antithesis of the toxic man,' and has 'curated his aesthetic in a way that he thinks might render him more likeable' to a certain type of female. How successful he has been in that aim is a moot point. Personally, I'd rather eat a hair sandwich than date a man who has deliberately turned himself into 'a walking mood board of on-trend markers for softness, stylishness and a feminist leaning that he may or may not actually possess'. Certainly, he has become a much-ridiculed meme on TikTok, where women will enjoy posting stealth content of Performative Males out in the wild (and imagining what it's like to date them), and videos tagged with #performativemale have been viewed more than 28 million times. In Seattle and New York, PM competitions have even been held over the summer, with hundreds of people gathering to judge which of the contestants was the best example of the species. Posers, we used to call them. And if we're in the novelty persona game, I wonder whether we might soon be ready to bring back another oldie but goodie? Masculine Man.
