Vijayawada: Former chief minister and YSR Congress president
YS Jagan Mohan Reddy
on Wednesday criticised the TDP-led coalition government for its "authoritarian governance, misuse of police machinery, and suppression of democratic opposition".
Speaking to the media at the party's central office here, Jagan said that only the YSRCP is standing with the people, while the constitution and rule of law seem to be "absent in the state". He said the YSRCP will continue its fight against the "anti-people regime" of NDA by responding to public grievances.
"We will be with farmers, women, youth, students, or employees wherever there is an issue. The YSRCP will continue to be the sole voice actively questioning the fake promises and betrayals of Chandrababu Naidu," said Jagan.
He highlighted campaigns like "Babu Surety, Mosam Guarantee" and "Recalling Chandrababu's Manifesto," which he said had exposed the non-fulfilment of major welfare promises. Jagan said that Naidu, having lost public trust, and "is misusing police powers to suppress dissent". He condemned the filing of "false cases" against senior police officers such as PSR Anjaneyulu, Sunil Kumar and Kanti Rana Tata. He alleged that over 80 inspectors and hundreds of constables remain suspended or sidelined, while only pro-TDP officers are being empowered.

Jagan Mohan Reddy's ‘voice in Delhi', who is Midhun Reddy, arrested in Andhra liquor scam probe?
YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) floor leader in the Lok Sabha, three-time MP, son of former Andhra Pradesh Minister and party strongman Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, and former CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy's 'voice in Delhi'. These are some hats that YSRCP's Rajampet MP P V Midhun Reddy has donned in his decade-long political career. With the Special Investigation Team (SIT) arresting Midhun on Saturday in connection with the alleged Andhra Pradesh liquor policy scam, the YSRCP is likely to feel the pinch of his absence in the Monsoon Session of Parliament, which commences Monday. Sources in the party said Midhun could 'withstand the game of political vendetta' as he belongs to a family with a strong political background. 'He was arrested only because he is a prominent leader and is Peddireddy's son,' the source said. Referring to Midhun as a 'mass leader', another source said the Rajampet MP often rubs shoulders with Jagan. 'His rise has not just irked the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) but also the BJP,' the source said. Following the YSRCP's drubbing in last year's Lok Sabha polls, where it managed to win only four of the 25 seats in Andhra Pradesh, and the exit of key leader V Vijayasai Reddy, Midhun emerged as the party's voice in the capital and was seen by many as the de facto number two in the YSRCP. 'After Vijayasai Reddy's exit, Midhun was the go-to man for young workers. He was also the party's face in Delhi. His father has been one of the TDP's biggest critics. By arresting him, the TDP wants to send a message that even Jagan's closest aides would not be spared,' a party insider said. A mechanical engineer by qualification, Midhun went on to complete his MBA in International Business and worked at a private firm in Hyderabad before entering politics in 2014, when he first won the Rajampet seat. He has held it since. In 2014, Midhun defeated former Andhra BJP chief Daggubati Purandeswari by over 1 lakh votes and followed it up five years later by winning the seat against the TDP's D K Sathya Prabha. Last year, he successfully contested against former CM of undivided Andhra, N Kiran Kumar Reddy, winning by more than 76,000 votes. Midhun is accused number 4 in the alleged scam, which, according to the SIT, pertains to the liquor policy during Jagan's term between 2014 and 2019. According to the SIT, the policy was allegedly tailor-made to benefit a few local liquor brands by replacing popular liquor brands with lesser-known ones in exchange for bribes to the tune of Rs 3,200 crore. According to the arrest notice, Midhun is a 'core conspirator (of the scam) from inception to execution, who has orchestrated policy changes and coordinated with co-accused to secure kickbacks from distilleries and suppliers'. The notice goes on to add that the 'transaction trail (between entities involved in the alleged scam) indicated the use of front or shell companies for laundering kickbacks, warranting further investigation into potential quid pro quo'. Early into his political career in 2015, Midhun found himself at the centre of a controversy after he allegedly assaulted an Air India staffer at Tirupati airport and spent time in a Nellore jail in connection with the case. Dismissing the allegations of 'political vendetta', the TDP claimed there was 'enough to prove Midhun's involvement in the scam'. 'The money acquired through illegal means was used to fund the YSRCP's 2024 assembly election campaign,' a source said. However, YSRCP leaders said Midhun was in talks with several BJP leaders at the Centre over TDP 'targeting local-level workers' and was arrested as the 'TDP did not want him to be in touch with the BJP'.

Why are millions of US student borrowers suddenly facing $27 billion in new interest charges?
Trump administration dismantling of US Department of Education ends SAVE Plan benefits for millions. (AP Photo) Millions of federal student loan borrowers in the US are facing a sharp increase in their debt as $27 billion in new interest charges are set to accrue over the next 12 months. This change affects around 8 million borrowers who had previously benefited from a Biden administration plan that temporarily paused interest accumulation. The sudden return of interest charges follows a series of legal and administrative actions, including the dismantling of the US Department of Education and a federal court ruling that blocked the Biden-era repayment plan known as the SAVE Plan. These developments have disrupted federal student loan servicing and repayment programs, impacting millions of Americans. The end of the SAVE Plan and department of education dismantling The SAVE Plan, introduced during the Biden administration, capped monthly payments at 5% of discretionary income for undergraduate loans and 10% for graduate loans while maintaining a zero percent interest rate. This program aimed to ease repayment burdens for borrowers with financial difficulties. However, a federal court injunction blocked the SAVE Plan in June 2024. The Trump administration declared the plan illegal and said it would resume charging interest to 'bring fiscal responsibility to the federal student loan portfolio,' as reported by Politico. With the US Department of Education being dismantled under an executive order signed by Trump, the agency lost its ability to maintain or defend the plan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo A spokesperson for the Education Department told Politico, 'Loan servicers cannot process these applications as SAVE is no longer an option, as it is illegal.' Who is affected and the scale of financial impact Approximately 8 million borrowers will have interest charges resumed on their loans starting August 1. Newsweek reports that this will result in an estimated $27 billion in new interest costs over the next year. In addition, nearly 460,000 applications from borrowers seeking income-driven repayment plans with the lowest monthly payments are expected to be rejected. These applications represent 31% of a backlog of 1.5 million federal student loan applications, as cited by Politico. Key figures Details Borrowers affected 8 million Estimated interest charges $27 billion Applications rejected 460,000 Percentage of backlog rejected 31% of 1.5 million applications Legal and policy background behind the changes The Trump administration has maintained that previous Biden-era student loan forgiveness programs were unlawful. A spokesperson quoted by Politico said, 'Congress designed these programs to ensure that borrowers repay their loans, yet the Biden Administration tried to illegally force taxpayers to foot the bill instead.' The executive order signed by Trump directs the closure of the US Department of Education 'to the maximum extent appropriate and permitted by law,' shifting control of education programs to states and local communities. This shift has created uncertainty around loan servicing, repayment schedules, and forgiveness programs. TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here . Ready to navigate global policies?
