"I'll cherish this for a long time": Mitchell Starc reflects on milestone Jamaica Test
Starc's performance gave plenty of reasons to talk, he claimed a triple-wicket opening over, reached the 400-wicket milestone, and bagged his career-best figures with the pink ball, 6/9.
The left-armer produced a highlight reel of his own, full of deadly inswingers, shattered stumps, and batters trapped in front. Only one of his six wickets required a fielder's help. His 400th Test wicket came when Mikyle Louis got an unfortunate pad in the way.
The night before the Test, Starc was honoured with signed jerseys, a bottle of Jamaican rum, and a heartfelt video message featuring family, former teammates, and even players from his AFL side, the Greater Western Sydney Giants but once the match began, it was all business.
'It's certainly been uncomfortable throughout the week,' he said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.
'I was happy just to have a win and sing the song. It's certainly been a special week to play, to wear the baggy green. It's been one I'll cherish for a long time,' he added.
The game ended so quickly that fans were seen playing on the outfield before sunset. While Australia's dominance, led by Starc and Scott Boland (who took a hat-trick), looked ruthless, it wasn't a typical pink-ball collapse. On the first two days, wickets were hard-fought but on the third day, Starc tore through West Indies in daylight, taking three wickets in his very first over.
Interestingly, only nine overs in the entire game were bowled under lights.
'(It's) probably a win against the conditions in the fact that we only bowled ten (nine) overs under lights,' Starc said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.
'I think everyone today with the ball was pretty spot on. I don't think anyone thought it was going to happen that quickly. We were talking about almost consolidating the scoreboard until we got closer to that night session,' he added.
'It wasn't a plan to drag it out. (But) if things weren't happening straight away, we knew that things would happen quicker in the night session. (It was like) this is what we want to do at the start, but if it doesn't happen straight away, let's just chill out and stop the scoreboard and cash in at night. Didn't need to,' he said.
Starc's figures in this four-Test stretch, starting from the World Test Championship (WTC) final, are staggering--20 wickets at an average of 16.45. His 6/9 now ranks better than his previous best of 6/48 against India in Adelaide.
'I felt like my rhythm has been pretty good for a while now,' he said, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.
'Even coming into the lead up to Lord's, I felt like everything was clicking into place. It's been nice to have that carry on throughout the series. Today, again, just felt like everything was in sync and got some late swing. I think perhaps the breeze might have helped in the fact that I wasn't under lights,' he added.
Incredibly, Pat Cummins wasn't needed to bowl in the fourth innings, only the second time in a major match when he was fit. Between Starc and Scott Boland, the job was already done.
'I think a lot of the chat leading into this week is how resilient you need to be and professional to make it 100 Tests,' Cummins said of Starc, as quoted from ESPNcricinfo.
'(But) I think that's kind of the Starcy I always remember playing alongside. He can tear a game open by himself really in the matter of a couple of overs. It feels like he can do it in any format, any time,' he added.
Once a sceptic of day-night Tests, Starc had voiced concerns when the format was first introduced. While he still feels such matches need careful scheduling with Adelaide as an ideal example, his record says otherwise, 81 wickets at an average of 17.08 in pink-ball Tests. (ANI)

More Injury Concerns For India! Star Pacer To Be Ruled Out Of 4th Test: Report
Arshdeep Singh is reportedly set to be ruled out of the fourth Test between India and England with Akash Deep also doubtful. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh is reportedly set to be ruled out of contention for the fourth Test between India and England at Old Trafford, which begins on July 23. According to The Indian Express, the fast-bowler suffered a cut on his bowling hand during a nets session on Thursday while trying to stop a ball hit by Sai Sudharsan off his own bowling. The physios were seen stitching up his hand and the injury now seems set to sideline him for some time. 'He has stitches on his hand and is likely won't be available for the fourth Test match, the Indian team will see if he is ready for the fifth Test or not," the newspaper cited a source as saying. India's assistant coach, Ryan ten Doeschate, had earlier said, 'Arshdeep took a ball while he was bowling there, Sai hit a ball and he tried to stop it and it's just a cut. So we have to see how bad the cut is. Obviously, the medical team have taken him off to see a doctor and obviously, if he needs stitches or doesn't need stitches it's going to be important to our planning for the next few days." The report added that Akash Deep is also doubtful for the Test due to a groin strain. The pacer didn't bowl in the team's nets session before they departed for Manchester. Meanwhile, if Akash Deep is also ruled out, India will have to revert back to Prasidh Krishna, who looked out of sorts in the first two Tests, taking six wickets across four innings. Kuldeep Yadav is another option but the spinner doesn't seem to be in coach Gautam Gambhir's tactics for now. India have been already sweating over Rishabh Pant's availability. The left-handed wicketkeeper suffered a blow to his finger while keeping wickets in the third Test at Lord's. Ten Doeschate said he'll play as a specialist batter if he can't wicketkeep, but that'll mean India will have to get Dhruv Jurel in anyway, which would mean axing a specialist batter. view comments First Published: July 19, 2025, 21:58 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Australia outlasts S. Korea to reach FIBA Women's Asia Cup final
Shenzhen, July 19 (UNI) Australia advanced to the final with an 86-73 victory over South Korea here today at the FIBA Women's Asia Cup. Chasing its first Women's Asia Cup title, Australia took the early initiative and held off a determined South Korean fightback to secure the win. Australia dominated the boards with a 45-26 rebounding advantage. Cayla George posted a double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds, while four other Australian players also scored in double figures. "We knew that we had to lock in defensively and have a good game plan from the very start. We got a great start, and then offensively the ball didn't start moving. They started to shoot the ball well, so we had to make some adjustments at halftime defensively," Australia coach Paul Goriss said. "The girls came out in the second half with a greater intentional defense with our ball pressure and stayed connected with our switching." Isobel Borlase opened with six straight points, sparking a 15-0 run over four minutes that gave Australia a 19-5 lead and forced South Korea to call a timeout. South Korea responded as Choi I-saem and Heo Ye-eun combined for eight points to keep the game within reach. The first quarter ended with Australia leading 22-13. Australia caught fire from beyond the arc as Stephanie Reid and Sara Blicavs hit three consecutive 3-pointers. South Korea, known for its outside shooting, answered with three straight of its own from Choi, Park Ji-hyun and Heo to cut the gap to four. South Korea made eight of 15 attempts from long range in the first half, compared to Australia's 38.5 percent from deep, but Australia still held a narrow 42-38 lead at halftime. In the second half, South Korea was limited to just three 3-pointers. Australia broke the game open with a 16-4 run in the third quarter to lead 62-48. As South Korea's shooting cooled down, Australia leaned on its physicality and tempo to push the lead to as many as 15 points with five minutes remaining. Heo and Shin Ji-hyun sparked a brief rally with fast-break points, but Australia responded quickly with a series of inside attacks to maintain control. Heo finished with 20 points for South Korea, while Park added 19. Despite the loss, South Korea coach Park Soo-ho praised his players' performance. "Australia is one of the strongest teams in this competition, but our players executed what I had asked them very well on the court," he said. Australia last reached the final in 2017, the year it debuted in the tournament. Looking ahead to Sunday's final, Goriss said, "We still have one more job to do: we want to go home with the gold medal. We've been playing some great basketball right from the very time that we landed in China. We are really deep with our depth and rotation." UNI/XINHUA BM

After injuring bowling hand, Arshdeep unlikely to be fit enough for fourth Test
Agency: Last Updated: Manchester, Jul 19 (PTI) Injured Indian left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, who is yet to play in the ongoing Test series against England, is unlikely to be available for selection for the fourth Test beginning in Manchester from July 23. Arshdeep, who is yet to play Test cricket, injured his left hand while trying to stop a shot from Sai Sudharsan's on his follow through during the net session in Beckenham on Thursday. The Indian team on Saturday arrived in Manchester in their bid to level the five match series following the heartbreak of Lord's. Following the training session in Beckenham, Arshdeep was walking around with his bowling hand bandaged. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate, in as many words, had hinted that Arshdeep would be racing against time to get fit for the Manchester Test even though he had not found a playing eleven spot in the first three games. 'We'll take a call on the combination we play, particularly given the Arshdeep situation as well, we'll make that call closer to Manchester," said Doeschate referring to the left-arm pacer getting injured during training. 'He took a ball while he was bowling there, Sai had a ball and he tried to stop it and it's just a cut, so we have to see how bad the cut is. Obviously the medical team has taken him off to see a doctor and obviously if he needs stitches or doesn't need stitches that's going to be important to our planning for the next few days," he had said post training in Beckenham. The left-arm pacer was only likely to get a shot if one of two senior pacers — Jasprit Bumrah or Mohammed Siraj happen to be rested due to workload management. Bumrah, Siraj and Akash Deep formed the pace trio at Lord's. It remains to be seen if Bumrah decides to play the Manchester Test or the fifth one at The Oval with the series on the line already. There is no clarity over the availability of Akash Deep, who is dealing with a groin niggle. Siraj has featured in all the games so far and is due for some rest.
