‘I think it's time to move on': Kagiso Rabada tells South Africa to look past WTC win and focus on future

Indian Express14 hours ago
South Africa ended a long wait for an ICC Trophy when they defeated Australia in the World Test Championship final back in June but pacer Kagiso Rabada said on Thursday that it was time to move on from that euphoria of winning the title and focus on the next task in hand. The task he was referring to was South Africa's next three Twenty20 clashes and three one-day Internationals in a series vs Australia, starting on Sunday.
'I think it was special, and I've done so many interviews on that since. I think it's time to move on. I don't think we'll forget about that ever as a team, and South Africa won't ever (forget), but time to move on now.' Rabada told a press conference.
'It was kind of like a relief. But the show moves on, and moving toward the T20 World Cup, I guess the approach will be a bit different. Now, you know, there's no fear of anything,' he added.
Rababa, who turned 30 in May, has not played since the WTC final in London. 'Thankfully, I've had quite a long break, so that's been awesome. Maintenance work consistently has to be done because the volume of cricket is quite a bit,' he said.
Talking about the South Africa vs Australia rivalry, he said, 'It's always some hard cricket being played, some good cricket. Whenever we play Australia, I always feel like they get the best out of us, because they're sort of in our faces. And I guess we like that.'
The Australia tour comes ahead of next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka, and the 2027 World Cup in Southern Africa, and South Africa hope the experience will benefit the young players in their squad.
'For me that's extremely exciting to see them raring to go. It's just about trying to see where we're at as a team, moving into almost like another generation,' Rabada added.

Ashes 2025: Glenn McGrath backs Australia to whitewash England 5-0

Legendary pacer Glenn McGrath has once again made his trademark prediction ahead of the Ashes, backing Australia to complete a 5-0 whitewash of England in the 2025-26 series. The former fast bowler, who played a pivotal role in six Ashes triumphs during his illustrious career, believes home conditions and Australia's settled core will prove too strong for Ben Stokes' side."It's very rare for me to make a prediction, isn't it? And I can't make a different one - 5-0," McGrath told BBC Radio 5 Live, maintaining a tradition he has rarely deviated five-match series, beginning on 21 November, will mark Australia's first home assignment in the new World Test Championship cycle. England, meanwhile, head Down Under carrying the weight of a dismal recent record - they have not won a Test in Australia since the 2010-11 series, when Andrew Strauss led them to a memorable 3-1 victory. Since then, they have endured two whitewashes (2006-07, 2013-14) and a 4-0 defeat in 2017-18. McGrath pointed to Australia's bowling depth as a major reason for his confidence, highlighting the formidable quartet of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon as a significant advantage."I'm very confident with our team. When you've got Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon firing in their home conditions, it's going to be pretty tough," he said. "Plus, that track record England have had, it'd be interesting to see if they can win a Test."While England fought back to secure a thrilling 2-2 draw in the 2023 Ashes at home, they have not held the urn since 2015. With the contest returning to the faster, bouncier tracks of Australia, McGrath expects the hosts to reassert their last recorded a 5-0 Ashes whitewash on home soil in 2013-14, a series McGrath often cites as the gold standard for ruthless, disciplined Test cricket. Whether the current side can replicate that feat remains to be seen, but McGrath's bold forecast has once again set the tone for the build-up to cricket's fiercest rivalry.- EndsYou May Also Like

Brendan Taylor Top Scores But New Zealand Dominate Zimbabwe

Last Updated: Brendan Taylor top-scored with 44 in his first Test after a ban, but New Zealand dominated the first day of the second Test. Former Zimbabwe skipper Brendan Taylor top-scored in his first Test after a lengthy ban but couldn't prevent New Zealand from dominating the first day of the second Test on Thursday. Taylor scored 44 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 125 by fast bowlers Matt Henry (five for 40) and debutant Zakary Foulkes (four for 38) at Queens Sports Club. New Zealand finished the first day 49 runs ahead, reaching 174 for one at the close. Devon Conway (79 not out) and Will Young (74) put on 162 for the first wicket before Young was bowled off an inside edge by Trevor Gwandu shortly before the close. Taylor, 39, was banned for three-and-a-half years in January 2022 for breaching the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption code as well as a drugs offence. He had not played Test cricket since captaining Zimbabwe against Bangladesh in Harare in July 2021, where he scored 81 and 92. The former skipper opened the batting and saw four wickets fall to Henry and Foulkes before he was the fifth out, caught at cover off Henry with the total at 83. He faced 107 deliveries and smacked six boundaries. Foulkes and fellow fast bowlers Jacob Duffy and Matthew Fisher all made their Test debuts, with Nathan Smith and Will O'Rourke injured and Michael Bracewell released to play in the Hundred competition in England. Fisher claimed his first Test wicket when he had the last man, Tanaka Chivanga, caught at mid-off. New Zealand were again captained by Mitch Santner after regular captain Tom Latham failed a fitness test on an injured left shoulder. Henry continued his outstanding form in Zimbabwe, which earned him player of the series honours in a Twenty20 triangular series and player of the match in the first Test, which New Zealand won by nine wickets at the same venue last week. It was Henry's sixth five-wicket haul in Tests. Foulkes dismissed the experienced duo of Sean Williams and captain Craig Ervine, swinging the ball away from the two left-handers. In a near-repeat of the first day of the first Test, Conway and Young built on the work of their bowlers and laid the foundation for a big New Zealand lead. Rishabh Pant ruled out of Asia Cup, West Indies Tests after Manchester injury; surgery not required

India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is reportedly ruled out of the impending Asia Cup and "possibly" for the home Test series against West Indies that follows, owing to the injury he incurred during the fourth Test match of the recently-concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series against England in Manchester. India's Rishabh Pant was injured during the Manchester Test match against England(PTI) The 17th edition of the Asia Cup will be played between September 9 and 28 in the UAE. Less than a week after the conclusion of the continental tournament, the Test series against the West Indies will start. India will play only two Tests in that series, between October 2 and 14. According to a report in the Times of India, Pant will not be part of either event after suffering from a toe fracture during the Test series against England. The incident happened during India's batting innings at Old Trafford, when a yorker from Chris Woakes struck his foot. He was immediately carted off the field and rushed to the hospital, where medical scans revealed that he suffered a fracture and was ruled out of action for six weeks. However, he braved the pain and hobbled down the next day to continue his knock, as he scored a fifty to help India draw the match. Pant was eventually ruled out of the final Test, where India pulled off a magnificent six-run heist at The Oval against England to end the five-match series on a 2-2 draw. The report added that Pant would not require any surgery. India will start its campaign against UAE on September 10 and are likely to play all its matches in Dubai. India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman are clubbed in group A, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong are in group B. This edition of the Asia Cup will be held in T20 format as is the convention with the next ICC global meet being T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
