Prez Murmu, PM Modi hail Kargil Vijay Diwas as symbol of soldiers' valour

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday paid glowing tributes to the military personnel who made supreme sacrifices to ensure India's victory in the 1999 Kargil war against Pakistan.
"On Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay heartfelt tributes to our bravehearts who displayed extraordinary courage, grit and determination in defending our nation's honour in the toughest of terrains," Singh said.
"Their supreme sacrifice during Kargil war is a timeless reminder of the unwavering resolve of our Armed Forces. India shall remain forever indebted to their service," he said in a social media post.
On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army announced the successful culmination of "Operation Vijay", declaring victory after a nearly three-month-long battle on the icy heights of Kargil in Ladakh.
Pakistani forces had stealthily occupied strategic positions in the mountains in Kargil, aiming to sever the transport link between Kashmir and Ladakh. However, India launched 'Operation Vijay' to evict them and achieved success.

Among these are Section 232 national security exemptions that protect Indian pharmaceuticals — which account for about 40% of America's generic medicines — along with electronics, semiconductors and technology products that form the backbone of bilateral trade. Additional exemptions under Executive Order 14257's Annex II cover raw materials, certain metals and chemical formulations. Select product categories like apparels, vehicles and parts, furniture, organic chemicals and some food products like shrimp – which account for billions of dollars of exports -- will now face high tariffs entering the US market. Trump's additional 25% tariff followed after over a week of criticism focused on New Delhi's continued purchases of Russian energy. Washington has sought to increase economic pressure on Russia to negotiate an end to the Ukraine war by restricting Moscow's oil export revenues. Either way, it is unlikely that a decision will be taken on either front as long as Parliament is in session. Momentum on real solutions shouldn't be expected before August 20,' says Prerna Bountra, Deputy Director at the Ananta Aspen Centre, a New Delhi-based think tank. Hold letter writing initiative thanking armed forces, police: DoE to schools
As a part of Independence Day celebrations and 'Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign', the Directorate of Education (DoE) has directed schools to hold various patriotic events, including a letter writing initiative with students addressing letters to the personnel of the armed rorces and the police. 'Letter writing drive should be organised on August 11, wherein students will write letters addressed to Armed Forces and police personnel. Schools shall coordinate with the Department of Posts for facilitating the dispatch of the letters to nearby police stations or Army headquarters/station,' read a DoE circular. The DoE also suggested subjects for the letters like 'dedicated service in ensuring safety and security', 'appreciation for their sacrifices in working tirelessly, even during festivals and holidays' and 'feeling motivated by their bravery and dedication'. School principals said that such programmes have been held earlier too, before Independence Day. Other scheduled events are school wall decoration, Tricolour-inspired art, Tricolour rakhi and brooch-making workshops.
