Paddy's Pond industrial area evacuating due to out-of-control wildfire
The provincial government has issued an evacuation order for the Paddy's Pond industrial area. The evacuation zone includes Akita Equipment and surrounding buildings and hangars. It comes after the Thomas Pond wildfire ignited along the pole line near Paddy's Pond, between the Trans-Canada Highway and Fowler's Road, around noon on Monday. The RCMP said the Trans-Canada Highway has re-opened, but secondary roads in the Paddy's Pond evacuation area remain closed. Fowler's Road at Peacekeepers Way is also closed to southbound traffic. In a post on social media Monday afternoon, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary said police, emergency, and fire services are at the scene. "Members of the community are asked to avoid the area while emergency responders navigate response and suppression efforts," the post said. WATCH | Paddy's Pond fire has residents of nearby communities on edge: Akita Equipment co-owner Amy Furey Howlett also posted on social media on Monday afternoon. She asked anyone with a Class 1 driver's licence for help, as the company worked to move its equipment away from its facility on Paddy's Pond Road. According to the province's active wildfire dashboard on Monday afternoon, the out-of-control fire was 170 hectares in size. Provincial fire duty officer, Mark Lawlor, said three water bombers were diverted from the Kingston fire to try to suppress the Thomas Pond fire. Helicopters and firefighters from the St. John's Regional Fire Department are also on the scene. Lawlor told CBC's On The Go that all efforts are concentrated on keeping the wildfire away from the Conception Bay Highway. "We're trying to work that fire literally into Paddy's Pond if we can. We're going to try and work the northern flank, and turn the fire as best we can. That's the goal," Lawlor said. "The primary concern is to try to ensure that it doesn't reach the C.B.S. highway and cross over." Premier John Hogan said there is no imminent danger to anyone living in the communities near Paddy's Pond, but the wildfire is moving fast. "It's moving toward Paddy's Pond right now," Hogan said during a live wildfire update Monday afternoon. He said power interruptions are expected. Lawlor confirmed that one transmission line has been shut down after Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro posted a public advisory on its website. It said the fire is directly in the public utility's transmission corridor, which serves the St. John's metro area. "There is a potential for smoke, fire and/or fire suppression efforts to impact these lines. In the unlikely scenario that multiple lines are impacted, this could result in a power outage to St. John's and surrounding areas," the advisory said. The Town of Conception Bay South issued a traffic advisory following the evacuation order. The town asked drivers to avoid the C.B.S Industrial Park and Fowler's Road. Mayor Darrin Bent told CBC News some drivers were stopping to take photos of the smoke along Peacekeepers Way, and it was causing traffic delays and congestion along the highway. The Town of C.B.S. is also closing all of its indoor and outdoor recreation facilities to reduce unnecessary travel within the town and on town roads. Drivers are asked to avoid unnecessary travel through the town at this time. Meanwhile, the City of St. John's is advising that smoke from the fire has reduced air quality throughout the city and its surrounding areas. "Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed and to turn off air exchangers and HVAC units to help reduce indoor smoke exposure," City of St. John's spokesperson, Jackie O'Brien said in a news release.

Storm Center PM Update: Severe Weather Chances Return
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — It has been a warmer day for KELOLAND with much more sunshine. We got the chance to dry out East River after significant rainfall over the last few days. We aren't quite done with the unsettled weather though as an incoming trough will bring the chance for thunderstorms late this afternoon and through the overnight hours. A majority of KELOLAND is in a slight risk for severe weather and all hazards are possible with any supercell storms that fire up. Make sure to stay weather aware and keep an eye out on our social media pages for updates. The recent model outputs shows scattered thunderstorms in North Dakota potentially forming a line and moving southeast, the main threat would then shift towards severe wind gusts. There is a chance the line could clip northeastern KELOLAND overnight. Besides the thunderstorm chances, most of us will see partly cloudy skies with lows in the 60s. Going into tomorrow, the heat will become more widespread with highs in the 80s and 90s. Dew point values will be in the 60s and 70s East River, this means heat index values could be close to the triple digits. Overall, it will be a quiet day and the atmosphere will try to recharge. As a cold front moves through, there will be more energy for thunderstorms to form during the evening. The conditions will likely form storms in clusters and the activity West River will move into East River overnight. Another slight risk of severe weather is in store for most of KELOLAND with the main hazards being damaging wind gusts and hail. We will take a break from rain chances at the beginning of next week as a high pressure system settles in. Highs will be seasonable before we become slightly warmer into the end of the week with periodic chances for showers and thunderstorms. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. High winds damage buildings, uproot trees in NW IA
NORTHWEST IOWA (KELO) — High winds from an afternoon storm left behind scattered branches, uprooted trees and damaged buildings across southeast KELOLAND. A relatively calm day turned a little chaotic in parts of northwest Iowa. Strong winds roll through Ocheyeden. About 20 miles west, a viewer sent us footage of dust kicking up in the air. Storm damages towns across KELOLAND The storm scattered branches and caused structure damage. In Rock Rapids, the winds were so strong that it uprooted a tree and damaged a home. It also halted construction progress on a building and was the reason behind a tree falling onto a garage. There was also evidence of high winds in Little Rock. 'It was a mess when I came into town,' Kirk Peters said. That was especially true at Joe Schilling's home. He and his wife were out of town when the storm hit. 'We were in Sioux Falls. It's our 37th anniversary today, and we were actually at the zoo, and my neighbor called me and asked if we were home. I said 'No.' He said, 'Well, you got a great big branch on your house,'' Schilling said. The tree means a lot to him. 'This is actually a tree we planted when my son was in kindergarten, so it's kind of a little bit sentimental to us,' Schilling said. People like Schilling and Kirk Peters have been working hard to clean up. 'I've been pushing trees and stuff down to the tree dump on the north end of town, and it was pretty well full, so I took my loader and just piled it all up. It just kept coming,' Peters said. So people in Little Rock and the surrounding communities will have quite the mess to clean up in the coming days. You can expect more coverage Thursday of storm damage throughout northwest Iowa. In Sioux Falls, over 3,000 households lost power during tonight's thunderstorms. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
