SHOWBIZ: American artiste Jared Leto accused of sexual impropriety by 9 women

LOS ANGELES: Nine women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against actor and musician Jared Leto, describing his behaviour as "predatory, terrifying, and unacceptable," according to a recent investigative report published by Air Mail.
The report details accounts spanning years, with multiple women accusing the 53-year-old of inappropriate behaviour, including sexually suggestive communication with minors and unwelcome advances.
One woman told Air Mail that in 2006, when she was 16, Leto approached her outside a Los Angeles café. He was sitting with then-19-year-old actress Ashley Olsen at the time. The woman claimed Leto grabbed her arm and initiated a brief conversation before asking for her phone number.
"He called a few days later," she recalled. "I don't know if he was on drugs or what… It was the weirdest, grossest voice… [But] for me, it's Jared, you know?"
She said Leto invited her to a party at his house, but she declined. Despite her refusal, she claimed he continued calling her late at night.
"The conversations turned sexual. He'd ask things like: 'Have you ever had a boyfriend?'"
Model Laura La Rue recounted a similar encounter from 2008, when she was also 16. At a private event in Beverly Hills, she said Leto watched her "so intensely" that it made her uncomfortable.
Another woman said she began texting with Leto while underage. During visits to his home, she claimed he asked her sexually inappropriate questions.
Allie Teilz, a DJ and music producer based in Los Angeles, resurfaced a 2012 Facebook post via Instagram last month in which she wrote: "You're not really in LA until Jared Leto tries to force himself on you backstage… In a kilt.. And a snow hat," Air Mail reported.
A representative for Leto has "expressly denied" the various women's accusations reported in Air Mail, including Teilz's, which the representative said were "demonstrably false".
Leto himself has yet to comment on the allegations.
The frontman of the rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2014 for his work in the biographical drama, Dallas Buyers Club.
His other acting credits include House of Gucci, Blade Runner 2049, Morbius, and Fight Club.

Beijing woos US influencers with free trip to show ‘real China'

China seeks to enlist young social media influencers from the United States to collaborate with its local content creators. - Photo: AFP BEIJING: China is inviting American influencers to join a 10-day, all-expense paid trip through the country in July, as part of Beijing's efforts to boost people-to-people exchanges and showcase the 'real China'. The initiative, titled 'China-Global Youth Influencer Exchange Programme', seeks to enlist young social media influencers with at least 300,000 followers to collaborate with Chinese content creators, according to recruitment posts by Chinese state-affiliated media outlets, including the China Youth Daily. While relations between China and the US have deteriorated in recent months over issues including geopolitics, technology and trade, the programme marks an effort to boost cultural exchanges. In 2024, President Xi Jinping had called for more exchanges between Chinese and American universities, after previously announcing a plan to welcome 50,000 American students to China. Another post in College Daily, a publication particularly targeting Chinese students in North America, specified that applicants for the exchange programme based in the US should be active on platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and X, and should 'love Chinese culture' and 'have no history of bad behaviours'. It called on Chinese students overseas to encourage influencers in their circle to apply, and said the successful candidates will get China's official invite as well as special assistance from the state to process their visas. The trip intends to take the participants across five Chinese cities – Suzhou, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Handan and Beijing, and will cover China's e-commerce hubs, the headquarter of companies such as Xiaohongshu Technology Co and BYD Co. The influencers will also partake in cultural activities such as Taichi and be able to live-stream their trip to the Great Wall, according to the posts. Working with Chinese social media influencers on ideas, and getting their content promoted by China's state media will be part of the deal. Social media content from Western influencers travelling through China post-Covid-19 have won praise from the state media for their authentic portrayal of everyday life in the country. In April, American streamer IShowSpeed's visit to China sparked widespread curiosity among fans about advancements in Chinese technology. The authorities have tapped social media influencers to check negative information and promote positive contents. In 2023, think-tank Australian Strategic Policy Institute analysed over 120 foreign influencers, mostly active on Chinese social media, received the state's help to grow their influence in return for content that praises and spreads Beijing's narrative. - Bloomberg

HK-born actor Chapman To celebrates 20th wedding anniversary with ex-TVB star Kristal Tin

Hong Kong-born Taiwanese actor Chapman To and former TVB star Kristal Tin recently marked their 20th wedding anniversary with an intimate gathering of close friends. Among the guests was actor Anthony Wong, who made a special trip to Taiwan to join the pair in celebrating the milestone. On June 7, To, 53, shared a throwback photo from his wedding to Tin, 47, surrounded by famous friends such as Andy Lau, Wong Jing and Shawn Yue – all of whom reportedly served as his groomsmen. The couple tied the knot in June 2005 after six years of dating. 'Today, 20 years later, some people remain while others have moved on. I wish everyone happiness. To me, happiness means letting go of the past, not worrying about the future and simply embracing the present moment,' To captioned his Facebook post. He also uploaded a photo with Anthony Wong on his Instagram Story, adding that the 63-year-old is the only groomsman he still keeps in touch with after all these years. The actor then capped off the celebration by posting a short video of Tin talking about how he had transformed her life. Meanwhile, Tin reflected on Instagram how her perception of the word 'tolerance' has evolved over the years. The Brother's Keeper (2012) star admitted that she once perceived the term negatively, saying: 'Why do I have to tolerate things after marriage? Didn't we love each other so much that we couldn't help but be together in the first place?' However, Tin shared that her perception has now shifted, and she views tolerance not as putting up with one's flaws but peacefully accepting them. 'Happy 20th anniversary. Please continue to give me your guidance in the future,' she wrote, alongside a photo with To and their dog.
