A striking image of a massive bloom of phytoplankton—microscopic plant-like organisms that often float near the surface of the ocean—has been captured from space in the Gulf of Maine.
Coccolithophores, a type of phytoplankton that has been less common in the waters off the New England coast since about 2010, "made an impressive appearance" this summer, NASA said in a statement.
The image, taken by NASA's PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) satellite, captured of one of the largest blooms of its kind to turn up on the waters of the Gulf of Maine in recent years.

The presence or absence of these tiny organisms—along with other types of phytoplankton—in the Gulf of Maine can impact the entire ecosystem from finfish to shellfish and the local fisheries that depend on them.
Phytoplankton form a crucial part of the coastal and open ocean ecosystems and a healthy system houses a diverse range of species.
Coccolithophores do not produce any known toxins that are harmful to humans, but dense phytoplankton blooms of any species can potentially cause localized issues, such as low dissolved oxygen levels that can kill fish, microbiologist Brianna King warned in a March article for the Maine government's department of marine resources.
Blooms of coccolithophores can also be beneficial for the local environment. For example, their calcium carbonate scales can act as a natural buffer, "dissolving under certain conditions and helping to counter-act ocean acidification on a very localized level," King said.
Recent years have seen coccolithophores make a rebound. Researchers have also reported a rise in dinoflagellates—a type of phytoplankton with whip-like tails—and a decades-long drop in phytoplankton productivity. These changes have occurred amid changing water conditions, such as varying temperatures, NASA said.
The relationship between these changing water conditions and phytoplankton communities in the gulf is unknown but Mitchell believes ongoing research, with the help of images captured by PACE, could start pointing to some answers.
"A major benefit of PACE is its ability to 'see the rainbow,'" Mitchell said, enabling scientists to observe the ocean color in more detail and at a higher resolution than before.

The planetary system is thought to be around 6 million years old, so we are really getting a snapshot into the early stages of its development. Our sun is considered to be middle-aged and is around 4.6 billion years old. TWA 7 b is ten times smaller than any previous exoplanet to be directly observed with a telescope, according to The Guardian . Typically, planets of this size can't be seen by telescopes, as the light from the host star masks direct observation. The research team, led by Dr. Anne-Marie Lagrange, got around this by making a telescopic attachment that mimicked the results of a solar eclipse. This reduced much of the light emanating from the star to make it easier to observe surrounding objects. The process allowed the team to spot the planet, which appears as a bright source of light with a narrow ring of debris. Lagrange and her team do note that there's still a "very small chance" the images show a background galaxy, but the evidence "strongly points" to the source being a previously undiscovered planet. The first exoplanet was first discovered in 1992. Since that time, nearly 6,000 more have been spotted. Again, the vast majority of these have not been captured with direct imaging. This is just the latest stunning discovery by our good friend James Webb. A study by the University of Technology Sydney published last month found that moon dust was far less toxic to our pulmonary system than the air pollution someone would encounter in a city. The study suggests that inhaling moon dust won't cause long-term damage to our airways. Tests showed lunar material didn't trigger significant oxidative stress to lung cells, dissuading the fears provoked by the uncomfortable experiences of Apollo astronauts and other NASA personnel after the missions from a half-century ago. Now, if you're in the exclusive club of scientists with access to powdered lunar regolith, I wouldn't whip out your I.D. badge to start snorting lines of moon dust for a laugh. Michaela B. Smith, lead researcher and Ph.D student, said: "Any dust, if you inhale it, you'll sneeze, cough, and have some physical irritation. But it's not highly toxic like silica, where you end up with silicosis from being on a construction site for 10 years. It's not going to be something like that." Moon dust is still infamously abrasive. The study noted the irregular shape and rough edges of the dust. According to statically-charged lunar dust would stick to space suits during Apollo's moon walks. This became a serious issue when astronauts returned to the Lunar Module. Once inside, the dust would sting the crew's eyes, cause a sore throat and sneezing. The same thing would happen once the flight surgeon unpaced the suit back on Earth. This new research will be used for Artemis III, NASA's first crewed return to the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. The mission is still scheduled for 2027 after numerous delays caused by development issues. However, the entire program has been jeopardized by the Trump administration's funding cuts and cancellation of the SLS rocket program. If Artemis continues, there are plans for a permanent human presence on the surface. Without the looming threats of long-term health issues, NASA could use moon dust to build its base on the surface. NASA's James Webb Space Telescope just found its first exoplanet

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope has captured an image of an exoplanet for the first time since it began science operations in July of 2022. The previously unknown celestial body has been named 'TWA 7 b.' It is located some 110 light-years away from Earth around the constellation Antlia and orbits the young nearby star TWA 7. 'After eliminating the possibility of a potential observation bias, the scientists concluded that it was most probably an exoplanet,' the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) said in a statement. The image was taken using a coronagraph on the telescope's Mid-Infrared Instrument, which is also known as 'MIRI.' Coronagraphs are used to block out the light of stars such as the sun in order to observe fainter nearby objects. The findings, spearheaded by a researcher at the center, were published on Wednesday in the journal Nature. The center developed the coronagraph, alongside the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission. Looking within a disk of rocky debris and dust around the star, scientists have previously identified concentric ring-like structures within them. Until now, astronomers had suspected the structures resulted from gravitational interaction between the building blocks of planets and unidentified planets. TWA 7, which was one of two systems they looked at, has three rings. 'One of the two systems, named TWA 7, has three distinct rings, one of which is especially narrow, and surrounded by two empty areas with almost no matter,' the center said. The image Webb took revealed the potential source. 'Detailed simulations have indeed confirmed the formation of a thin ring and a 'hole' at the exact planet's position, which perfectly corresponds to the observations made with the JWST,' the center noted. With a mass comparable to Saturn, TWA 7 b is easier to detect in the mid-infrared thermal range because it is some 10 times lighter than those previously snapped in images. The recently formed planets in these systems are also still hot, making them brighter than their older counterparts. There are currently more than 5,900 confirmed exoplanets that exist beyond our solar system. Most of them orbit other stars and the majority of those that have been discovered are in our Milky Way galaxy. But, NASA believes that billions exist. Exoplanets help to better understand how planetary systems form including our own. However, they are often drowned out by starlight. Scientists hope to capture images of planets with even less mass in the future using Webb. 'This result marks a new step in the research and direct imaging of increasingly small exoplanets, which are more similar to the Earth than to the gas giants of the Solar System,' the center wrote.
