Filipina suspect wanted in Toronto immigration fraud case
The suspect, identified as Maria Corpuz, 43, is currently the subject of an active manhunt and is facing several criminal charges, including three counts of fraud under $5,000, three counts of false pretense under $5,000, and two counts of uttering forged documents.
According to a statement released by the Toronto Police, Corpuz allegedly offered immigration services to multiple individuals between May 2023 and May 2025. She reportedly operated in the Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue area, a bustling commercial district in midtown Toronto.
Investigators say that Corpuz presented herself as someone who could assist clients in processing Canadian citizenship applications and work permits. Victims claimed that they paid thousands of dollars to Corpuz, trusting her promises of legitimate immigration assistance. In return, they were provided with what appeared to be official documents from the Canadian government.
However, the scheme unraveled when the victims later discovered that the services rendered were not authorized or legitimate. Upon verification, the documents turned out to be fraudulent, and the victims were left with no legal immigration status despite having paid significant amounts of money.
Toronto Police believe that there may be more victims who have yet to come forward and are urging anyone who may have had similar dealings with Corpuz to contact authorities.
The suspect is currently unaccounted for, and law enforcement officials have publicly released her photograph in the hopes that someone from the community can provide information on her whereabouts. Authorities have emphasized that any information, no matter how small, may be vital in locating and apprehending Corpuz.
In their appeal to the public, police are also encouraging Corpuz to seek legal counsel and turn herself in peacefully.
Fraud cases involving immigration services have been on the rise in recent years, with many unsuspecting individuals falling victim to scams due to a lack of awareness or desperation to regularize their status. Law enforcement agencies across Canada continue to educate the public on how to identify licensed immigration consultants and avoid being exploited.

8 Filipinos rescued, 20 Chinese nabbed in suspected scam hubs in Pampanga
Eight Filipinos were rescued while 20 Chinese nationals were arrested in alleged scam hubs during two separate operations conducted at Clark Freeport Zone in Angeles City, Pampanga. 'Yun po, inaaral po namin kasi one week pa lang po kami rito,' one of the rescued Pinoys said. (There was a friend who was just inviting us. We are looking for a client. We are just studying it because we have only been here for a week.) 'Bago lang po talaga ako rito. Kakadating lang po namin kahapon. May inaantay po kaming tao. Hindi po namin alam basta ang sabi po mag-antay lang po kami dito,' another rescued Filipina said. (I am really new here. We just arrived yesterday. We are waiting for someone we don't know. They just said to wait here.) The 17 arrested Chinese nationals were not able to give a statement due to language barrier. Another residential property near the villas was also raided where three Chinese nationals were arrested due to alleged online fraud. The suspects were brought to Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City. Authorities are checking if these two suspected scam operations were connected. Missing Filipina found dead in Las Vegas, Nevada
NEW YORK — A Filipina who was reported missing in Las Vegas, Nevada, has been found dead. Seventy-five-year-old Lourdes Morin was reported missing by her family on July 27. She was last seen heading to attend Mass at St. Viator Church near Flamingo, but she never returned home. According to a Missing Person Alert issued by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Morin was last seen around 7:00 a.m. on July 26 near Dorothy Avenue. She was wearing a white blouse and black pants at the time. Three days later, her decomposing body was discovered by hikers in a ravine, approximately 10 kilometers from where she was last seen. According to Michael Lampkin, the husband of Morin's daughter, her body was found face down in a gully and was already in an advanced state of decomposition. Authorities have yet to determine whether foul play was involved. An autopsy has been conducted to establish the exact cause of death. The victim's family is now asking: How did Lourdes end up in a ravine so far from where she was last seen? Morin, a native of Victorias City, Negros Occidental, arrived in Las Vegas in May to visit her daughter and grandchildren. A green card holder, she was scheduled to return to the Philippines in January. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched by a family friend to help raise funds for her cremation and the repatriation of her ashes to the Philippines. NBI arrests Chinese allegedly posing as Filipina, says she is another 'Alice Guo'
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on Tuesday announced the arrest of a Chinese who was allegedly misrepresenting herself as a Filipina upon her arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), dubbing her as another 'Alice Guo.' According to the NBI, the woman arrived from Guangdong, China on July 13. The operation stemmed from an intelligence report of a Chinese national who was allegedly using a Filipino name for her business transactions. Using her Filipino name, the NBI said she was able to secure a Philippine passport and was also able to establish several companies. However, verification with the Bureau of Investment showed that she only had a Special Investor's Resident Visa. The NBI also conducted examinations on the fingerprints of their NBI clearance forms, which showed that the fingerprints were identical. Due to this, the Bureau of Immigration has filed a complaint against the woman for violation of the Immigration law, specifically misrepresentation as a Filipino. She is also facing a complaint for violating the Limitations and Conditions of Stay as well as Undesirability. Aside from this, the NBI filed a case against her for violation of the Philippine Passport Act of 1996 with the Prosecutor's Office of Taguig City. 'Director Santiago assures that the NBI will delve deeper into what may be another 'Alice Guo' story,' the NBI said in a statement. Dismissed Bamban, Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo's identity came into question after the raid on the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO) hub located in her former municipality as well as Senate inquiries into POGOs. The NBI later said that Alice Guo and Chinese passport holder Guo Hua Ping have the same fingerprints.
