SS Georgia: QB Stockton, Smart lead Bulldogs through unfamiliar youth movement

Miami Herald4 days ago
Georgia coach Kirby Smart transitions from one of his most experienced rosters to a full-blown youth movement as he begins Year 10 with the Bulldogs.
"Our team is going to be comprised of 54 percent first- and second-year players. Very big change for us," Smart said at SEC Media Days in Atlanta on Tuesday.
From Smart's vantage point, he has new names and faces, but the same standard and belief he brought to the Bulldogs from Alabama a decade ago. He said the program mantra in recruiting and the "strained" landscape of college football has been prioritizing relationships "over transactions."
That could mean finding an all-in freshman who fits the program over replacing a first-round pick with a high-dollar transfer.
It also gives Smart an unfamiliar baseline, going from "one of the most veteran teams I've been a part of" to the 2025 version where follow the leader might be a bit more literal than previous seasons.
"What do you get with that? You get youthful exuberance. We've had practices that have been spirited," Smart said. "We had a great spring practice that we talked about the words fire, passion and energy. I think the biggest thing that separates college football teams today is complacency among players versus fire, passion and energy among players. So we've tried to highlight those traits as much as possible with our players.
"Our players need to bring juice and energy each and every day. If they don't, they'll be confronted by the players that do. And if the players continue to do that, we'll have a successful season and a successful football team."
Smart is starting the season with a new QB1, albeit a familiar one, in Gunner Stockton. The quarterback jumped into the fray in the SEC Championship when Carson Beck was injured and then started the Sugar Bowl, a 23-10 loss to Notre Dame.
Already this offseason Smart has defended Stockton's potential with talk show host Paul Finebaum while taking multiple opportunities to remind his QB where he needs to be by the final Saturday in August.
Smart said he learned all he needed to know about Stockton being ready by watching him prepare. The line coaches commonly share about preparing like the starter is Stockton's modus operandi since he arrived in Athens.
"Gunner is a kid that leads from the front. Gunner is a winner," Smart said. "He comes from an athletic family background, his dad played at Georgia Southern, and he's the kind of kid you want at the front of the line, and he leads from the front. So I appreciate what Gunner does. He's going to be a big part of our program this year in leadership and doing that with the offensive players. He's already begun to do that in his leadership groups that he runs right now."
His sophomore quarterback is the embodiment of what Smart said the Bulldogs are trying to build around and a message to players and opponents of the complacency Georgia hopes to avoid.
"You can say what you want, but there's people more in college football today, especially in the SEC, that are comfortable with where they are," Smart said, listing examples from his coaching past from Julio Jones and Mark Ingram at Alabama to Georgia pupils such as linebackers Roquan Smith and Nolan Smith.
"(Thinking) 'This is a pretty good life. I'm earning 200K a year. I'm very comfortable.'
"You don't reach your goals being comfortable. You don't attain great success -- none of those people I mentioned before were ever comfortable. They were aiming at something. They had a goal. They wanted to go achieve it.

Notre Dame sees another Indiana wide receiver Jerquaden Guilford commit to Ohio State

Recruitment still open 100% but it's some programs showing big time love 👀This top 10 and decision might have to come earlier than expected 😳 Unfortunately for Notre Dame, one of its recent teams that have given them problems, Ohio State, continues to do a great job recruiting to state of Indiana. The Buckeyes on Friday won out the recruitment for Jerquaden Guilford, the states top ranked wide receiver in the 2026 recruiting cycle according to the 247Sports Composite . A Fort Wayne native who never received an offer from the Irish, but had scholarships from Georgia, Indiana, Michigan and Ole Miss. You have to wonder why Notre Dame opted not to offer Guilford, as he's clearly good enough to play for them. Maybe it was a fit inside the program, as the Irish have passed on numerous in-state prospects who could have been difference makers. Over the last few cycles, the Buckeyes have won out with Mylan Graham, Ian Moore, Joshua Mickens, and Caden Curry, all top Indiana prospects. In the Irish's 2026 class, there are already five receiver commits in Kaydon Finley, Bubba Frazier, Devin Fitzgerald Brayden Robinson and Dylan Faison. This could very well have been a cause where the Irish liked who they already had in the fold, which would make perfect sense. There is an argument to be made that Guilford's size and skill set was similar enough to Fitzgerald's, which is why they passed. What should worry Notre Dame fans is the fact that 2027 in-state 5-star receiver Monshun Sales could be leaning away from the Irish as well. You can't let a player of his caliber leave the state, even if he is a national recruit. Notre Dame has offered, but Sales social media has been very pro-Ohio State. Hopefully the Irish can win out on this battle, as they continue to lose top in-state prospects to the Buckeyes. Nick Saban's Coaching Future Receives Major NFL Update

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Nick Saban is one of the best head coaches in football history. His success at the college level, especially with the Alabama Crimson Tide, was nothing short of amazing. After taking a full season off from coaching, rumors have started circulating about Saban's future. Could he consider making a comeback to coaching? He enjoyed working in the media during his off year, but he's still capable of being an elite level head coach. With that in mind, questions have started coming up about where Saban could coach if he did decide to open up to a return to the sideline. There are only a few teams across the country who would have no interest in the coaching legend. Paul Finebaum, one of the most notable reports in college football, has now weighed in on Saban's future. He doesn't see a return to the college game for Saban. "I think it's impossible to believe he will come back to college football," Finebaum said. "Nick Saban walked away two years ago for a specific reason. He had had enough of it. I think if Saban ever returned to working in sports, it would be to the NFL. That could happen; I don't think it will. I think mostly this was a non-starter [on Monday]. " Saban has coached two seasons in the NFL throughout his career. Both of those years came with the Miami Dolphins. He compiled a 15-17 record during the 2005 and 2006 seasons with the Dolphins. He won seven total college football national championships as well. Fans would love to see Saban coaching again. A return to college doesn't seem likely with his distaste for the NIL and transfer portal changes, but the NFL could be an option. More than likely, the scenario of Saban returning isn't going to become a reality. Finebaum is likely correct with his opinion on the matter. Writer proposes Lakers trade for former Defensive Player of the Year

The Los Angeles Lakers need a little more help in order to become championship contenders, and they know it. They reportedly want to improve their backcourt defense, and they may have to make a trade in order to do so, as they lack flexibility under the first apron of the NBA's salary cap. One report indicated that they have had some preliminary trade talks to inquire about the availability of Marcus Smart, a veteran guard who won the Defensive Player of the Year award for the 2021-22 season. Smart is 31 years of age and has been injury-prone, but he could be the type of suffocating defender L.A. needs, and he could also serve as a secondary ball-handler and facilitator. Jedd Pagaduan of ClutchPoints proposed that the team send guard Gabe Vincent, big man Maxi Kleber and a 2032 second-round draft pick to the Washington Wizards for Smart. Via ClutchPoints: "What made Vincent valuable for the Lakers last season was that he showed up for the majority of the season, suiting up in 72 games and providing some much-needed backcourt versatility for the Purple and Gold," Pagaduan wrote. "Giving him up for Smart requires the Lakers to take a risk and have faith that the 2022 DPOY isn't damaged goods quite yet. "That requires a lot of positive thinking, as the Grizzlies, the team that acquired Smart to be their de facto Dillon Brooks replacement, had to give up a first-rounder just so they could get his contract off the books. Smart hasn't been at his best physically over the past few seasons, picking up a knock here and there which added up to a ton of missed time "... There is a chance that the 31-year-old won't be able to return to his DPOY form, although even then, he would represent an upgrade over Vincent. ... But at the very least, Smart showed that he can still play solid basketball for stretches. His shooting percentages improved towards the end of last season when he was with the Wizards, and in LA, he won't be tasked to do much of anything other than to defend, hit open shots, and ruffle opponents' feathers. "The expectation for Smart should the Lakers trade for him would be for him to play at least 65 games, play 20 minutes a night, and act as a key piece of a Purple and Gold squad that aims to recapture the defensive heights they reached last year." Los Angeles is in a situation where it may not be able to be picky about the player upgrades it pursues on the trade market, given its limited trade assets. Smart has appeared in just 54 games over the last two seasons, but as long as he's available for the entirety of the playoffs, he may be a good player for the team to go after. This past season, he averaged 9.0 points, 3.2 assists and 1.1 steals in 20.0 minutes a game. He shot 34.8% from 3-point range, which was his highest figure in that department since the 2018-19 season. After spending his first nine seasons with the Boston Celtics, Smart has plenty of playoff experience, which includes five trips to the Eastern Conference Finals and one appearance in the NBA Finals. That wouldn't exactly hurt a Lakers team that has gotten younger lately.
