Shubhangi Atre Blames Alcoholism For Divorce from Piyush Poorey: ‘My Daughter Suffered More Than I Did'
Shubhangi Atre has broken her silence on her divorce from late husband Piyush Poorey, revealing that his long battle with alcohol addiction was the reason behind their separation.
Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain actress Shubhangi Atre, known for her endearing portrayal of Angoori Bhabhi, has spoken out candidly for the first time about her divorce from her late husband, Piyush Poorey. The revelation comes in the wake of Piyush's untimely demise on April 18, 2025, at the age of 48 due to liver cirrhosis—a consequence of long-term alcohol addiction.
While the actress has largely remained private about her personal life, she chose to address the matter after facing online backlash from trolls who accused her of revealing the divorce post-fame. Setting the record straight, Shubhangi shared that their marriage had been under strain for several years due to Piyush's battle with alcoholism—an affliction that eventually cost him his life and nearly tore their family apart.
'I tried everything I could to save my marriage," she said. 'Even sending him to rehab didn't help. Our families gave it their all, but the addiction consumed him and slowly impacted everyone around him."
Despite finalising their divorce in February 2025, Shubhangi said she never abandoned Piyush during his illness. 'I remained in constant touch with him, especially during his hospitalisation. I never stopped encouraging him to seek help," she said. 'People don't understand the years of emotional turmoil behind such decisions. They judge without knowing the pain."
Shubhangi emphasised that her decision to separate was ultimately for the well-being of their daughter, Ashi. 'I had to think about my child. I couldn't allow her to grow up in an environment filled with instability and suffering. It was not a decision made overnight."
The actress traced the beginning of their troubles to around 2018–2019, a slow unraveling that culminated in their eventual separation. Yet, even after the divorce, she maintained a cordial bond with Piyush's family and remained emotionally supportive of him.
'Addiction doesn't just destroy the person—it devours everything and everyone close to them," she said somberly. 'My daughter suffered more than I did. And that is a pain that no mother can ever ignore."
