7 common habits that damage the kidneys

Globally, millions face kidney disease, often due to common habits. Overusing painkillers, excessive salt and sugar, and insufficient water intake can harm kidneys. Lack of sleep, smoking, and alcohol consumption also contribute to kidney damage by affecting blood pressure, hydration, and overall kidney function. Awareness and moderation are crucial for kidney health. Keeping the kidneys in good shape is crucial. These organs play a vital role in filtering waste, balancing electrolytes, and regulating blood pressure. About 850 million people are struggling with some form of kidney disease , worldwide, of which the majority of cases are contributed by chronic kidney disease (CKD). What's more shocking is that some of our common habits are the key contributors to the rising kidney diseases. Being aware of such everyday behaviours that harm the kidneys is crucial to preventing kidney disease. Here are some of the common habits that are damaging the kidneys. Overusing painkillers Yes, that's right. This might come as a surprise to you, but frequent use of over-the-counter pain medicines such as NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) and analgesics can damage the kidneys. These include ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen. These medications can reduce blood flow to the kidneys and, over time, lead to CKD. This is why doctors recommend using painkillers sparingly. Too much salt Excessive sodium intake is bad for the kidneys. Adding too much salt to your meals can increase blood pressure, which is one of the leading causes of kidney damage. The best way to cut back on excessive salt is to compensate for it by adding herbs and spices. Also, limit the intake of ultra-processed foods, packaged snacks, and fast food, which are loaded with salt and additives that can harm your kidneys and other organs. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Passive Income Ideas Sitting at Home Mone Click Here Undo Not drinking enough water Kidneys do not work without adequate water. This is because water helps the kidneys to flush toxins from the body. Dehydration would give the kidneys a tough time, as they won't be able to clear the waste, which over time could lead to kidney stones and infections. Not getting enough sleep Remember, a good night's sleep is one of the best things you can do for your health. Lack of sleep can directly affect your kidneys. This is because the kidney functions based on the sleep-wake cycle. Aim to get at least 7-9 hours of sleep every night. Too much sugar Yes, just like too much salt is bad for your kidneys, sugar also has deleterious effects. Excess sugar intake is linked to obesity. This increases the risk of developing high blood pressure and diabetes, which are some of the leading causes of kidney disease. Smoking One of the best things you can do for your kidneys is to quit smoking. Wondering what smoking has to do with kidneys? Studies have shown that people who smoke have protein in their urine, which is a sign of kidney damage. Daily mistakes that are damaging your kidneys Alcohol Yes, alcohol consumption can severely damage the kidneys. Alcohol changes how the kidneys work. Along with filtering waste, the kidneys also maintain the water balance in the body. But when you drink alcohol, your body gets dehydrated, and it can raise blood pressure, which directly harms the kidneys.

In light of Ahmedabad school stabbing, experts push for school counsellors to tackle teen aggression

Ahmedabad: The incident at Seventh Day Adventist Higher Secondary School has once again put the spotlight on the issue of aggression and impulsive behaviour among children and teens, said experts. While not all cases result in an act of assault, the number of children and teens brought for counselling has increased in the past few years, they added. Dr Punita Grover, a psychiatrist in Ahmedabad working closely with children and teens, says the recent incident underlines the issue of emotional control and anger management. "We see several cases of anger among children, and such cases come to a medical setting only after a certain level of aggravation. Such cases have increased in the past few years due to multiple factors ranging from exposure to social media to emotional and physical changes experienced due to hormonal changes in the teenage years," she said. She added that the suggestion of having a psychologist or counsellor at the school level could be one way to address the issue, where early signs can be identified and the children can be provided timely intervention. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad | Gold Rates Today in Ahmedabad | Silver Rates Today in Ahmedabad Experts said that it is not just about assault; it often manifests as abusive behaviour, bullying, or even self-harm. Dr Ajay Chauhan, superintendent of the Govt Hospital for Mental Health, said that the number of children and teens brought daily for counselling is around 15. "The number has increased in the past few years. The issue often lies in low level or lack of self-control and understanding of repercussions. Sometimes they lack emotional maturity, and thus regular interaction by parents, teachers, and mentor figures can help," he said. "Children today are exposed to imagery of bravado and violence, and minors are often consumed by it. Compared to a decade ago, children today also experience isolation. The issue of verbal and physical violence is multi-faceted and cannot be explained in simplistic terms. Several schools today have counsellors who are experts in addressing child and teenage issues, which is a welcome step," he said. Experts say there are several signs of emotional angst, ranging from preferring isolation, lack of social interaction, loss of appetite, getting triggered by relatively smaller issues, increased screen time, and overall disinterest in studies or other activities. Identifying these can be the first step towards understanding the turmoil. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Apple employees accuse fitness chief Jay Blahnik of workplace harassment; company says: ‘We strongly...'

Image credit: X (Twitter) Jay Blahnik, the executive behind the Apple Watch's popular "Close Your Rings" fitness feature, has been accused of creating a toxic and verbally abusive work environment, a report claims. Nine current and former employees have reportedly alleged that Blahnik's behaviour, which they described as manipulative and inappropriate, led more than 10 workers (which is nearly 10% of his team) to take extended medical or mental health leaves since 2022. The employees of the Cupertino-based tech giant also noted that when confronted, Apple protected Blahnik. The company reportedly settled a sexual harassment complaint and is currently fighting a lawsuit from an employee, Mandana Mofidi, who alleges that he bullied her. Despite the internal investigation, which Apple officials said found no evidence of wrongdoing, Blahnik has remained in his position as Vice President for Fitness Technologies. What Apple said about the accusations brought against its executive In a statement to The New York Times, Lance Lin, an Apple spokesperson, said: 'We strongly disagree with the premise of this story, and there are many inaccurate claims and mischaracterisations.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like CVS Hides This $1 Generic Viagra - Here's the Aisle It's Really In. Friday Plans Learn More He explained that Apple carefully reviewed workplace concerns but did not comment on matters involving individual employees to protect their privacy. Lin also noted that the company took 'all concerns seriously' and was ' deeply committed to creating and maintaining a positive and inclusive workplace.' However, he didn't provide any specific examples of the inaccuracies when asked to discuss the allegations brought forward by the report. 'We will continue to share the facts through the legal process,' he added. In a legal filing, Apple further denied that there had been 'harassment, discrimination, retaliation or any other harm.' It also noted that Mofidi had 'received constructive feedback and coaching from her supervisors in response to a well-documented history of unresolved performance issues.' What Apple employees alleged about the company's executive Before departing the company last year after a mental health leave, Kayla Desautels, the fitness team's social media coordinator, said: 'At the end of the day, we don't matter.' She said to NYT that she had 'never worked anywhere more toxic.' The report also cited the nine current and former employees to claim that, despite having extensive experience in the role, Blahnik frequently made unprofessional remarks. In 2021, Blahnik allegedly made inappropriate jokes about Olympic skier Ted Ligety, trainers' bodies, and colleagues' personal lives, the report claimed citing multiple employees. He was also accused of making lewd remarks about a manager's family, leering at creative director Wil Tidman, and sending Tidman an unsettling late-night text in 2022, which led Tidman to take medical leave and later reach a settlement with Apple. Separately, Mofidi claimed in a lawsuit that she was underpaid compared to male peers and was soon contacted by HR to discuss harassment allegations against Blahnik. In her lawsuit, Mofidi alleged that after being contacted about harassment claims against Blahnik, she faced retaliation, including being yelled at in meetings, getting criticised by his subordinates, and being pressured to leave through a performance plan or buyout. She said the experience was isolating and damaging to her mental health, eventually forcing her onto medical leave. Despite HR assurances, she claimed retaliation persisted, her transfer request was denied, and she resigned. A trial for this lawsuit is scheduled for 2027.
