Five dates to circle for remainder of Yankees' 2025 schedule

Yahoo2 days ago
ATLANTA - As the Yankees reconvene at Truist Park, there are several key 2025 dates to circle on the pinstriped calendar.
With 66 games to play, the Yankees (53-43) are two games back in the AL East, two games ahead in the AL wild card standings and they resume the 2025 season with a six-game road trip beginning Friday night.
Of those remaining 66 games, 26 are within the division - where the Yankees currently own a disappointing 10-16 record.
Here are five important regular season dates to remember:
July 21 at Toronto
Just 18 days after being swept by the Blue Jays in four games, the Yankees find themselves back at Toronto for a three-game set.
You'll recall that the Yankees arrived at Rogers Centre with a three-game lead over Toronto and exited in second place after George Springer and company destroyed Yankee pitching.
Here's a quick opportunity for the Yankees to answer back, or risk falling further in the AL East as the MLB trade deadline looms.
July 31 at Yankee Stadium
At 6 p.m., the MLB trade deadline arrives, at which time we'll know if GM Brian Cashman made any impact additions to a club in need of pitching, a third baseman, and possibly a righty-hitting outfielder.
'I'm always interested in adding something that'll have big impact, that'll supercharge us,'' Cashman said recently, emphasizing the need for pitching of any kind.
'We're going to be fully engaged'' in the trade market, and names like Eugenio Suarez, Zac Gallen and Jhoan Duran will be prominent these next two weeks.
August 5 at Texas
Based on his rehab timeline, this is possibly the date when Luis Gil is activated from the injured list (lat strain) and returns to the Yankees' rotation.
Gil's initial rehab start at Class AA Somerset went well, and his looming presence at least provides some trade-deadline period cover, whether or not the Yankees land an impact starter.
But it might take a few starts for Gil to build stamina and rhythm. And remember, his 2024 Rookie of the Year award was largely based on his first half; Gil posted a 5.15 ERA in his last 15 starts.
September 2 at Houston
Another playoff preview?
Joe Espada's Astros currently own a five-game AL West lead and this is the Yankees' lone regular season visit to hated Houston, kicking off a big stretch against tough opponents.
Following this three-game set, the Yankees arrive home for series against the Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers, who might be ready to clinch the AL Central during their Bronx visit.
September 12 at Boston
At the All-Star break, the Red Sox were riding a 10-game winning streak, moving them within a game of the second-place Yanks, who are 1-5 against Boston this year.
Rafael Devers isn't at Fenway Park to punish them anymore, but the Yankees should expect to see an Alex Bregman-led Boston club with some reinforcements stemming from the trade deadline.
This also starts a key period, the Yankees' final and potentially most treacherous road trip - 10 games, with stops at Minnesota and Baltimore.

England's clash with USA halted due to lightning fears

England's Test match with the United States was halted in the first half over lightning fears in Washington DC. The final game of England's three-match summer tour had kicked off one hour later than scheduled because of bad weather in the American capital. England led 14-0 through tries from Alex Coles and Luke Northmore and two George Ford conversions when played was halted after 29 minutes. Scottish referee Sam Grove-White took the players off the field after telling them that was more lightning in the area. The game had been due to start at 1705 local time (2205 BST) but USA Rugby released a statement 10 minutes before the scheduled kick-off time. 'Match Update. Weather delay ahead of the USA Men vs England match,' the governing body wrote on X. 'New kick-off time will be shared shortly.' The game eventually began at 1805 local time (2305 BST). England Rugby posted on their X account that the kick-off was delayed due to a lightning strike in the American capital. A giant screen at Audi Field told fans to 'exit the seating bowl' and 'seek shelter in the concourse'. Football's Club World Cup was recently held in the US and the tournament was plagued by extreme weather. Several games were played in fierce heat with temperatures sometimes exceeding 35 degrees Celsius, and Chelsea's tie with Benfica suffered a lengthy delay after a Charlotte thunderstorm forced the players off the field. Steve Borthwick's England were due to wrap up their season against the Eagles after beating Argentina 2-0 in South America.

WNBA All-Star 2025: Live updates, highlights as Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier's teams face off

The 2025 WNBA All-Star festivities continue Saturday evening with the All-Star game, tipping off at 8:30 p.m. ET from Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Second-year Fever star and All-Star captain Caitlin Clark will sit this one out while managing a groin injury, but she'll be on the sidelines helping coach her team as they take on fellow captain Napheesa Collier's squad. Six players will make their All-Star debuts this year, including 2025 No. 1 pick Paige Bueckers, Gabby Williams, Kayla Thornton, Brittney Sykes, and Mystics rookies Kiki Iriafen and Sonia Citron. The night marks a second chapter in the weekend's events, fresh off Friday night's 3-point and skills contests, won by the Liberty's Sabrina Ionescu and Natasha Cloud, respectively. The two were awarded prizes of $62,575 (Ionescu) and $57,575 (Cloud) for their wins, and Ionescu announced she'd split her prize with rookie Citron, who competed alongside her in the contest: This year's All-Star game will feature four special rules, including a 4-point shot, with areas for those shots designated with four circles (two on each side of the court) located 28 feet from the rim. Other special rules include live substitutions (one player substitution allowed per possession), a 20-second shot clock and the elimination of free throws until the final two minutes of the fourth quarter. Instead of free throws, players who are fouled will instead be awarded the maximum number of points for the number of free throws they would have attempted given the foul. Journalism wins the $1 million Haskell Stakes to earn trip to Breeders' Cup

Journalism proved again what a great competitor and super horse he is, rallying from next to last on the backstretch to win the $1 million Haskell Stakes on Saturday at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J. The stretch run was vintage but Journalism's start in the 1 1/8-mile race was poor as the 3-year-old broke seventh in the eight-horse field. He seemed to struggle, taking a fair amount of kickback from the somewhat muddy track. But around the far turn he moved to the outside and started to pick off horses, almost coming even with Gosger and Goal Oriented, who were side-by-side on the rail, at the top of the stretch. He still looked beaten mid-stretch but with about a furlong to go he got real interested, running in about four path, well clear of the other horses. Then his stride got more powerful and he breezed to a half-length win. It was his sixth win in nine lifetime races. Read more: D. Wayne Lukas, Hall of Fame trainer who shaped horse racing, dies 'I don't think he broke as well as we would have liked [Saturday],' said Michael McCarthy, Journalism's trainer. 'As soon as they got to the backside, he started engaging a little bit, but not quite like we've seen in previous races. It took him a little while to get to the front. I'm not sure if that was by design from [jockey] Umberto [Rispoli], but with a target in front of him. He's just a different horse. Journalism, who went off at 2-5, paid $2.80 to win. Gosger was second followed by Goal Oriented, Bracket Buster, Burnham Square, National Law, Kentucky Outlaw and Wildncrazynight. The win gave Journalism a free, expenses paid trip to the Breeders' Cup on Nov. 1 at Del Mar. The Haskell is part of the win-and-in program that helps to get the best horses to the Breeders' Cup. The big question is where will Journalism run next. Given that he is based in Southern California, it wouldn't be surprising to see him in the Pacific Classic on Aug. 30 at Del Mar. It would be a good prep for the Breeders' Cup Classic for a couple reasons. It would be his first race against older horses (defined as horses 4 and older) and also that the Breeders' Cup is at Del Mar. Journalism broke his maiden at Del Mar on Nov. 17. It would also mean little travel, a big plus considering Journalism has not run in Southern California since April 5 when he won the Santa Anita Derby. Saturday was his sixth race in five months and in five different states. Another option, and likely the one favored by most fans, could be the Travers Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 23 for a potential rematch with Kentucky Derby and Belmont winner Sovereignty. The Journalism-Sovereignty rivalry has been the best the sport has seen in a few years. Sovereignty has won both of their meetings, the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, while Journalism won the Preakness, a race that Sovereignty skipped because of the two weeks of spacing between the first and second legs of the Triple Crown. Journalism was the only horse to run in all three Triple Crown races. Trainer McCarthy played his cards close when asked after the race what was up next for Journalism. Read more: Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty wins the Belmont Stakes, beating Journalism again 'Judging by the amount of mud on him, a pretty hot bath, a nice hot bubble bath and we'll get him back to the barn,' McCarthy said. 'We'll enjoy this tonight and kind of think about what we're going to do from here.' Journalism was an $825,000 purchase by Eclipse Thoroughbreds, which includes Don Alberto Corp. as an investor. He was sired by Curlin with Mopotism as the mare. The daughter of Uncle Mo was euthanized on July 15 after complications from colic, a gastrointestinal issue. Mopotism, who ran in Southern California for trainer Doug O'Neill, was 11 when she died.
