DK Shivakumar proposes dedicated flyover from Hebbal to Bengaluru airport
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar urged the Centre to lend its support to several key infrastructure projects in Bengaluru, including a dedicated flyover between Hebbal Junction and Kempegowda International Airport, citing the city's rapid development and growing traffic needs.Shivakumar, who also oversees Bengaluru Development, met with the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi, presenting an appeal to expedite projects that are crucial to the city's growth.advertisementAmong the key projects highlighted were the upgrade of the Bengaluru-Kanakapura road to six lanes, completion of the stalled 7 km stretch of NH 209, the release of compensation to farmers affected by the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project, and the dedicated flyover.UPGRADATION OF NH 209
Shivakumar requested the Centre's assistance in upgrading the Bengaluru-Kanakapura highway (NH 209) from four lanes to six, with service roads. He emphasised that the development of industrial areas, particularly in Harohalli, has resulted in increased traffic and highlighted the need for measures to ensure smoother movement and improved safety.COMPLETION OF KAGGALIPURA ROADWORKHe also appealed for the completion of the 7-km section of NH 209 from Ravi Shankar Guruji Ashram to Kaggalipura Toll, which has been delayed due to objections from the National Green Tribunal. This stretch, he said, has become a major bottleneck, contributing to severe congestion. This could also smoothen the process for Karnataka to push for the second airport in Bengaluru.COMPENSATION FOR SATELLITE RING ROAD PROJECTadvertisementThe appeal also called for prompt compensation to farmers who lost land for the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR) project (NH 948A). The project, aimed at improving connectivity between key towns, has been delayed due to pending compensation payments, which have caused significant hardship for the affected farmers.FLYOVER FROM HEBBAL TO AIRPORTShivakumar urged the construction of a dedicated flyover between Hebbal Junction and Kempegowda International Airport, pointing to the heavy traffic congestion caused by the rapid development in the area. A flyover, he said, would help streamline traffic, reduce travel time for airport commuters, and ensure smoother movement for both local and industrial traffic.

South Indian states will be engines of growth, says Dharmendra Pradhan
South Indian states with progressive governments will be the growth engines for the country as it strives to become a developed nation by 2047. The entire nation is proud of them, said Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan on Tuesday. The Centre has not yet made any strategy on the proposed delimitation of parliamentary constituencies, he said, and quoted Union Home Minister Amit Shah to say that there would be no discrimination against the South states on this count. Talking to the media to present a progress report on the 11 years of Modi Government, he said that the tentative Census schedule has been released and women's quota too has to be taken into account. South along with Western India, especially Maharashtra and Gujarat, will continue to be ahead of the rest of the country due to their historical background, knowledge base and hard work. Mr. Pradhan also justified more private universities pointing out that enrolment in higher education need to be enhanced from the current 27% to 50% by 2035. 'We need more colleges, quality educational institutions, and universities. We have recently opened up the sector for foreign universities. But, 75% students continue to study in government funded institutions,' he said. Golden period On the Centre's performance front, the Minister claimed that the last 11 years will be judged by history as a 'golden period' because of the manner in which the country had prospered economically by becoming the fourth largest and having drastically reduced poverty rates. 'From a fragile economy, we have become a destination for global investments. Our digital payment system has cut corruption, and government capex has increased to ₹12 lakh crore from ₹2/3 lakh crore. Our government comprises 60% SC/ST/BCs. It will be remembered as a welfare, caring and sensitive government for the common people,' he said. 'Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have delivered a transparent, decisive and trustworthy governance,' he added.

Mamata targets BJP after passing resolution on Pahalgam in Bengal Assembly
Kolkata: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday alleging that the Pahalgam terror attack has proved that the Centre has failed to provide security to Indian citizens. 'Why was no army or police personnel present at the spot where the terror attack took place? The BJP (government) should resign because it has failed to provide security to the people of this country,' Banerjee told the state legislative assembly. She made the remarks during discussions on a resolution moved by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government condemning the April 22 terror attack and hailing the subsequent action by the Indian armed forces against Pakistan. In the resolution, which was adopted unanimously, the name of the Indian action, Operation Sindoor, was, however, not mentioned. Stating that Bengal was the first state to adopt such a resolution, Banerjee said: 'More states should do this.' 'The terror attack has exposed the Centre's failure to protect our citizens. While our jawans showed unmatched bravery, what was the Centre doing about recurring security breaches?' she said. The chief minister's remarks prompted opposition BJP MLAs to protest. Speaker Biman Banerjee intervened several times to stop the BJP MLAs from shouting slogans. BJP has 75 MLAs in the 294-member House., Alleging that the terror attack, which claimed 26 lives, could take place because of 'total failure and callousness' of the Centre, the Trinamool Congress chairperson targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi as well. 'PM Modi is only busy advertising himself,' Banerjee quipped. 'We don't support terrorism. Terrorists have no religion, caste, or creed. The men behind the Pahalgam attack should be caught and punished,' she said. Although she hailed the Indian armed forces, Banerjee raised questions on the counter measures saying India 'had an opportunity to take control of PoK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir).' 'There was a need to teach them (Pakistan) a lesson. We salute the bravery of our armed forces. But BJP is politicising their bravery for electoral gains,' she said. Led by Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition, the BJP MLAs continuously shouted slogans at her. 'It is a shame that Mamata Banerjee is politicising a national tragedy from the legislative assembly,' Adhikari said. With BJP not opposing the spirit of the resolution, it was passed unanimously.

Bengal Assembly passes resolution lauding armed forces amidst heated political exchange
The resolution, which hailed the armed forces for their 'unwavering courage in safeguarding the nation's security,' avoided any mention of the term 'Operation Sindoor', the name assigned to the May 7 precision strikes in parts of Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Kolkata, Jun 10 (PTI) The West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution commending the Indian armed forces for their precision strikes on terror hubs across the western border, even as the proceedings were marred by a stormy political showdown between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposition BJP. The resolution was moved by West Bengal Speaker Biman Banerjee. Chaos erupted in the House after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Centre over the Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives. 'The attack exposes the Centre's failure to protect our citizens. While our jawans showed unmatched bravery, what was the Centre doing about the recurring security breaches?' Banerjee questioned during her address, prompting vociferous protests from BJP MLAs. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari led BJP legislators in shouting slogans, accusing Banerjee of politicising a national tragedy. 'Why is there an objection to the word 'Sindoor' in the proposal? Why is the name missing?' Adhikari asked, alleging a deliberate attempt to undermine the operation's significance. Trinamool MLA Shiuli Saha countered, 'Does everyone wear sindoor?' To which Adhikari retorted, 'Yes, those who don't wear sindoor are Maoists. They support China. Those who don't believe in religion don't wear it.' He further alleged, 'We will fight against those who talk about Pakistan while living here, who support terrorist organisation Ansarullah Bangla.' BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul joined the fray, demanding clarity on the Pulwama incident and questioning the CM's alleged silence during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. 'Why didn't Mamata Banerjee urge Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to retaliate after 26/11?' she asked. Responding sharply, Banerjee said, 'Are you talking politics or fashion?' referring to Paul's former career in fashion. 'The BJP is incompetent. A shame to the country. Is he the Leader of the Opposition (Suvendu)? What a disgrace,' she added. Banerjee maintained that Bengal was the first state to bring a resolution in honour of the armed forces. Adhikari claimed that four members, including Ministers Firhad Hakim, Udayan Guha and Naren Chakraborty, had made negative remarks about 'Operation Sindoor' during the session. While Hakim and Chakraborty remained silent, Guha responded defiantly, 'Yes, I said it. I'll say it again and again.' Speaker Biman Banerjee had to intervene multiple times to restore order. Adhikari insisted that terms like 'targeted killing' and 'Operation Sindoor' be included in the resolution. 'My earlier amendments on the resolution against division of Bengal were accepted, so this one should be too,' he said. The Speaker replied, 'You could've submitted an amendment,' further angering BJP legislators. Amidst the ruckus, Mamata Banerjee continued her attack on the Centre, raising questions about security lapses, diplomatic failures, and the recent appointment of Pakistan as the vice-chair of the UN's anti-terror committee. 'Pakistan has become the vice-chair of the UN's anti-terror committee. How? Were we lacking in diplomatic relations?' she asked, while calling External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar 'a good person, a capable bureaucrat.' Taking a dig at the BJP, Banerjee said, 'You are teaching me Hinduism? I believe in the Hinduism of Ramakrishna and Gandhi, not your fake version.' She accused the BJP of disrespecting women and questioned why PM Modi had not visited the site of the Pahalgam attack. 'You just roam around promoting sindoor. We respect sindoor. You don't respect women. Why didn't the Prime Minister visit the attack site?' she asked, amidst chants of 'Modi-Modi' from the BJP benches. 'The BJP is incompetent. A disgrace. Is he Leader of the Opposition? Shameful,' she said, referring to Adhikari. As tensions continued to mount, Banerjee concluded, 'We supported this proposal to pay tribute to those who gave their lives. Terrorism cannot be forgiven. A leader in Madhya Pradesh asked, 'Why didn't the women fight back?' I want to ask — there are lakhs of soldiers, BSF, everyone. Where were the police? Where did the terrorists come from? Where did they go?' In a final jab, Banerjee referred to reports of Pakistani spies being arrested from Gujarat, the home state of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. 'How did information from Modi-Shah's state reach Pakistan?' she asked. Concluding the discussion, Speaker Biman Banerjee remarked, 'Seventeen members spoke on this matter,' and added, 'I am proud that this proposal was passed. West Bengal Assembly is the first to pass a resolution lauding the valour of our armed forces.' PTI PNT MNB This report is auto-generated from PTI news service.
