Ottawa officer suspended after army learned of antisemitic, homophobic 'Blue Hackle Mafia' group
As CBC News reported earlier this month, the Canadian Armed Forces has been investigating what was called the "Blue Hackle Mafia" group, which the army said was littered with "racist, misogynistic, homophobic and antisemitic comments and images."
Army commander Lt.-Gen. Michael Wright said in a July 16 message to members that he was taking steps to address the "inappropriate behaviour" in a Facebook group.
Those steps include temporarily removing the head of the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, a reserve infantry regiment of the Canadian Army, as an investigation into the group continues, he said. An interim head officer has been appointed to oversee the unit.
The statement does not include names, but the regiment's website lists Lt.-Col. Ryan Hendy as the commanding officer.
"This incident has damaged the reputation of the Canadian Army at a time when we are engaged in important modernization work as part of a ready, resilient, and relevant Canadian Armed Forces," Wright wrote in the statement.
He previously described the Facebook group's content as "abhorrent" and said he was "disgusted" by some of the posts.
According to screenshots of the Blue Hackle Mafia group shared with the Ottawa Citizen, the group posted hateful comments directed toward women and derogatory sexual comments about former prime minister Justin Trudeau.
In one posting described by the newspaper, members talked about getting together for drinks at an Ottawa bar.
"All welcome (except the Jews of course)," responded a member.
CBC News has not verified the screenshots.
Wright's statement goes on to say the army is investigating the alleged unethical conduct of any serving Canadian Army members who were part of the group. The group is also being investigated by the military police.
The Blue Hackle Mafia is one of two high-profile stories about conduct in the Armed Forces this month.

30-year-old man dies following scooter crash in Waterford
A man who was thrown from a scooter in Brant County has died from his injuries. Ontario Provincial Police said it happened along the Waterford Heritage Trail, near College Street West and Robinson Road, just before 9:30 p.m. Friday. The 30-year-old crashed the two-wheeled scooter and suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. 'I'm really sad to say that a 30-year-old from Brant County was pronounced deceased,' Sgt. Friend mourns international student who died in Kamloops, B.C., drowning
Social Sharing Friends and colleagues are mourning the death of a 27-year-old university student who drowned in Kamloops, B.C. Anant Kaul says Jatin Garg was a humble and hard-working student who came to Canada last summer to study business at Thompson Rivers University (TRU). "He was like my family," he said of Garg. "He was like my brother." Kaul said he was shocked when he heard that his friend of 12 years was swept away when he tried to retrieve a volleyball from the Thompson River. "I couldn't accept it," Kaul said. "[All] I could think [was] how hard it would be for his parents, for his family, for his ... little brother. I couldn't even imagine what feelings they would have at that moment." Kamloops RCMP confirmed the body's discovery in a statement on Tuesday, saying it was recovered near McArthur Island Park, a few kilometres northwest of Overlander Park where the young man was playing volleyball on the evening of July 6. Kaul said Garg didn't know how to swim. He said at the time two friends went into the water to help him, but they ended up requiring the help of bystanders. "They saved those two men but they were unable to save or find Jatin," he said. Kaul described his friend as someone who always had a smile on his face. "His strength really touched everyone who ever knew him," he said. Kaul said he is working to raise funds to have his friend's body sent to India where last rites will be performed. TRU president Airini (who uses one name) says the university has been in touch with Garg's family and has offered a range of counselling services for the campus community. "When we face these times of sadness, we walk alongside the family," Airini said. "All of our community is right there in heart and in support." Third suspect charged with first-degree murder in Barrhaven fatal shooting

Michael Journal Prest, 20, of Ottawa, has been charged with first degree murder, police announced Saturday. He will appear in court today.
