75 years ago: Superintendent, swimmers and youths taking a swing (1950)
In our latest look at the Tele's archives, we go back 75 years to tales of superintendents, swimmers, and fights at Port Glasgow dance halls... "SUPER" IS LEAVING Captain G.A.F. Norfolk, RN, who has been superintendent at the Fort Matilda Torpedo Factory for the past two years, is leaving Greenock shortly to take up a sea appointment. GOUROCK SWIMMER GOES FOR GOLD AROUND 25 entries have now been received from various parts of the country, including England, for the Dunoon to Gourock summer swim. Gourock swimming pool has become a popular training venue for some of the competitors, and yesterday 16 of the would-be "champions" put in a few hours at the pond. At the weekend there were 14 swimmers in the river having a try-out. One of the best performances was given by 15-year-old Audrey Rendell of Broomberry Drive, who swam to the Cowal shore and then back to Gourock. She is considered one of the local favourites for the big event. Mr Neil Gillies, Gourock pond-master, is training a number of the competitors for the swim. PORT PARTY DISTURBANCE FINES of £2 were imposed by Bailie Caldwell at Port-Glasgow Police Court this morning, when six youths pleaded guilty to a charge of conducting themselves in a disorderly manner and committing a breach of peace. Mr D. Main, Depute Fiscal, stated that the incident took place at the entrance of the Hibernians' Hall, Clune Brae, while a dance was in progress. The committee had been troubled by a crowd of hooligans known as the Alley Boys and the accused were barred from dancing in the hall. This disturbance went on for fully five minutes before the police were informed. When the doorman opened the door to let a number of dancers out, the accused rushed in. They were later ejected. The doorman alleged that one of the juveniles said: "You are a to put his hand in his pocket, which gave him reason to believe that he had something concealed there. Historic train carriage built here to live on as Airbnb
A train carriage that was built in Swindon almost 130 years ago has been transformed into an Airbnb. The second class 1895 Great Western Railway carriage has been restored on the outside with original colours from old drawings and charts, while the interior has been given a stunning makeover. The inside includes wallpaper from the same period alongside new additions such as a bed and stove. The 68-year-old said: 'The carriage was built in 1895 in Swindon, it's a GWR carriage. It ran on the Metropolitan Railway. He spent £8000 on the carriage and then £27,000 on the restoration, which now sits where the original platform of Delph station was. He continued: 'It's quite early, 1895, for a carriage – it's getting towards disintegration at that age if they've not been restored, this will be good for a long time now.' 'It is beautiful, and it's unique here. I bought this place in the 80s when I was in my 30s. I was quite lucky to acquire such a nice old historic building. 'I may turn one of the waiting rooms into an Airbnb with an ensuite, so when people stay in this carriage, if they've got friends, they can stay in the waiting room at the station house.' 'People adore it, there's a lot of history here. It's a beautiful place." Passenger train service ceased in the area in the 1950s, but – thanks to a loving £27,000 restoration – visitors can once again board a train at the station, by staying inside a £200 per night luxury Airbnb.

Scottie Scheffler enters the fourth and final round of the 2025 Open Championship on top of the leaderboard. Scheffler shot a 4-under par 67 in the third round at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland. He's lived up to the billing as the World No. 1 and tournament favorite. He took the lead on Friday during the second round and has pushed his score to 14-under, putting him four strokes ahead of Haotong Li, who is second on the leaderboard at 10-under. Matt Fitzpatrick is in third place at 9-under. He had finished the second round in second place before slipping into third on Saturday. Rory McIlroy, a native of Northern Ireland, is among a group of four golfers (Chris Gotterup, Harris English and Tyrell Hatton the others) tied for fourth place at 8-under.
