‘Didn't have enough evidence': Magic Beach Motel to stay open despite demolition plans

The demolition permit applicant and prospective developer, Rick Johnston, says he acknowledges the motel's charm and its cultural significance in the Vilano Beach community, but with the motel being in a flood plain and increasing costs to get the building up to regulation code, Johnston called the structure not salvageable.
Magic Beach Motel owner says Johnston has plans to transform the property into a commercial/residential use space with Johnston's vow to retain some elements of the property.
Not everyone was satisfied with that idea, though. And it was conveyed during the meeting's public comment portion.
'You can go into other places, and everything is brand new. They almost all look the same. But Magic Beach is special,' Keith Willard shared.
But not every speaker at Monday's meeting shared the same sentiment.
'It doesn't make any money, and it's in disrepair. It needs to have an upgrade,' Linda Lacerva remarks.
In the end, board members made a unanimous vote to defer the decision for the demolition permit. Board member Blair Knighting says county leaders wanted more evidence than 'we're just going to tear it down and save some elements' before the board moves forward.
According to the St. Johns County government website, the Cultural Resources Review Board meets on the second Monday of each month.
At the time of this publication, there was no meeting agenda released for May's meeting.

Fairbanks Morse Defense Awarded Contract to Supply Valves for U.S. Coast Guard's WCC Program

'It is a great honour': Enniskillen barber shop in running for national award
A barber shop with a twist is in the running for a national award. Headhunters Barber Shop and Railway Museum in Enniskillen is one of eight finalists in the UK-wide Love Your High Street Awards 2025, organised by the British Independent Retailers Association. The barber shop is the only finalist from Northern Ireland and was selected from amongst hundreds of independent businesses across the UK. Read more: Library demolition could see discovery of 'archaeological deposits' Founded in 1981 by brothers Nigel and Gordon Johnston, Headhunters Barber Shop & Railway Museum combines traditional barbering with a celebration of Irish railway history. In 2002, the brothers converted an adjoining ladies' salon into a railway museum to house their growing collection of artefacts. The museum, now one of the largest collections of small Irish railway memorabilia, covers the Great Northern Railway (Ireland), the Sligo, Leitrim & Northern Counties Railway, and the Clogher Valley Railway.
