What Is Baby Grok? Musk's xAI Announces Kid-Friendly AI Chatbot After Companion Controversy

NDTV4 hours ago
Days after introducing customisable 3D animated companions to the Grok chatbot, which many dubbed as being too sexualised, Elon Musk has announced a kid-friendly version of the artificial intelligence (AI) tool. The xAI CEO on Saturday (Jul 19) announced plans to release Baby Grok, which would only contain 'kid-friendly content'.
It is expected to be a simplified version of the Grok AI chatbot and will be tailored for safe and educational interactions with children.
"We're going to make Baby Grok @xAI, an app dedicated to kid-friendly content," Mr Musk wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Beyond this, Mr Musk did not disclose details on how the children-focused AI app will differ from xAI's usual offering. Unlike other chatbots, Mr Musk's Grok is known for giving foul-mouthed replies if the user asks for it. However, with children also operating the chatbot, it could have a negative influence, which may have prompted the development of Baby Grok.

Social media reacts
Reacting to the announcement, the majority of social media users lauded the move, saying they may now consider introducing Grok to their children.
"Instant favourite in every family home," said one user, while another added: "Much needed. I have to let my kids use my app right now over ChatGPT."
A third commented: "Thank you!!!!! My daughter has been wanting to play with it but I wouldn't let her."
What is Grok?
xAI's Grok, launched in 2023, is Mr Musk's response to OpenAI's ChatGPT, Meta's Llama, and Google's Gemini. With the AI being perceived as the future of technology and humanity, Mr Musk has spent considerable resources to fast-track Grok's development.
Earlier this month, xAI rolled out chatbot Grok 4 just months after releasing its previous iteration, underscoring the frenetic pace of AI development. Mr Musk claimed that Grok 4 is one of the most advanced chatbots capable of solving almost any query.
"With respect to academic questions, Grok 4 is better than PhD level in every subject, no exceptions," said Mr Musk during the launch. "At times, it may lack common sense, and it has not yet invented new technologies or discovered new physics, but that is just a matter of time.
The update came after the chatbot shared multiple antisemitic comments on X that drew widespread condemnation.
Currently, Grok has three modes: DeepSearch, Think, and Big Mind, which break down any query on the basis of the depth the user wants in the answer.

Couple's bizarre Rs 1,30,000 wedding meal auction to fund honeymoon sparks ‘clever or cringe' debate online

Weddings are often remembered for their vows, the first dance, and the shared joy of families coming together. But one couple found themselves at the centre of an online firestorm after introducing an unexpected twist to their wedding feast — auctioning off the first plate of dinner. According to a viral post on X (formerly Twitter), shared by the account @turbothad, the newlyweds kicked off their reception meal by announcing a live auction. 'The bride and groom just sat everyone down and said 'Alright folks, we know everyone's hungry… So we're auctioning off the first plate of dinner. Whoever buys it gets their table served first. Proceeds go to our Alaska fishing trip honeymoon.' Plate sold for $1500. Brilliant,' the post read. What started as a moment of surprise turned into a lively bidding war, culminating in one enthusiastic guest reportedly shelling out $1,500 (Rs. 1,30,000 approx) for the honour of eating first. — turbothad (@turbothad) — turbothad (@turbothad) Netizens had a mixed reaction In a follow-up post, the user praised the couple's strategy, writing: 'Selling to a room full of emotional people drinking on empty stomachs who love you… Genius.' While many at the actual wedding appeared to find the idea hilarious and memorable, the rest of the internet wasn't quite on board with the approach. Critics were quick to question the ethics of asking guests — many of whom had already spent time and money attending the event — to pay extra for timely access to food. One user commented, 'This is absurd and manipulative. Everyone has spent a lot of money and time to join you at your wedding. Making them pay extra to be served food in a timely manner is terrible.' Another chimed in with mock-legal advice: 'Bid $10,000 and never pay. A contract entered under duress is unenforceable.' Others saw the humour in it. One person recalled, 'Went to a wedding once where dessert was a rock-paper-scissors tournament. Things got violent. Weddings are wild these days.' Another guest shared a more philanthropic approach to wedding gifts, stating, 'We didn't really want presents, so we directed people to charities. This is a fabulously fun idea too.' Weddings are evolving. As traditions blur with personal touches, some couples are choosing to turn the event into a creative expression of their values — or, in this case, their sense of humour. While some see the dinner auction as a clever and lighthearted fundraising method, others feel it crosses the line of hospitality and respect.

Human Coder Beats AI In Epic 10-Hour Showdown: 'Humanity Prevails, For Now'

Machines might not be able to dominate humans despite the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) -- at least yet, after a Polish programmer defeated an OpenAI model in a head-to-head coding competition. Programmer Przemyslaw Debiak, better known as Psycho, emerged victorious after a 10-hour marathon coding stint at the AtCoder World Tour Finals 2025 Heuristic contest in Tokyo. The contest might have been the first time where an AI model competed directly against top human programmers in a major onsite world championship, according to a report in Arstechnia. Having already competed in several events prior to the big showdown against AI, Debiak, a former OpenAI employee, managed to coast to victory despite being 'completely exhausted'. "Humanity has prevailed (for now!) I'm completely exhausted. I figured, I had 10 hours of sleep in the last 3 days and I'm barely alive," wrote Debiak on X (formerly Twitter). "The results are official now and my lead over AI increased from 5.5 per cent to 9.5 per cent. Honestly, the hype feels kind of bizarre. Never expected so many people would be interested in programming contests. Guess this means I should drop in here more often," he added. The competition required the contestants to solve a single complex optimisation problem over 10 hours. The solution lies in using clever, often imperfect strategies to reach the best possible solutions within strict time constraints. While Debiak may have emerged as the winner, the AI model still managed to outperform the remaining elite human programmers, who had each qualified for the competition through year-long rankings. See the post here: Humanity has prevailed (for now!) I'm completely exhausted. I figured, I had 10h of sleep in the last 3 days and I'm barely alive. I'll post more about the contest when I get some rest. (To be clear, those are provisional results, but my lead should be big enough) — Psyho (@FakePsyho) July 16, 2025 Also Read | What Is Baby Grok? Musk's xAI Announces Kid-Friendly AI Chatbot After Companion Controversy "Last human to defeat AI?" Social media users congratulated Debiak on his victory and asked him to share the solution which helped him upstage the AI model. "Congrats! Looking forward to your analysis on the solutions if you get time," said one user, while another added: "This is much more interesting than basketball, tennis or even chess championships." A third commented: "You are likely one of the last humans to defeat an AI in a programming contest. This is a huge deal for humanity as a whole, even those who don't care about programming contests." With experts predicting that AI models will reach human-level consciousness, more popularly known as Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), in the next few years, Debiak's victory could perhaps be the last few instances where humans are able to beat the machines.
