England Docked Two Crucial WTC Points For Slow Over Rate In Lord's Test
In what can come as a blow to England's six-year-long wait to qualify for the World Test Championship finals, they have been docked two crucial points from the tournament for maintaining a slow over rate in the Lord's Test against India, besides being fined 10% of their match fee.
As a result of the point deduction, England dropped from second to third in the WTC table, with Sri Lanka climbing to second. India are still in fourth with just one win from three Tests. They lost the Lord's Test by 22 runs.
As per article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, cricketers are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over their team cannot bowl in the allotted time.
In addition, according to article 16.11.2 of the WTC playing conditions, a team is penalised one point for each over short.
'England captain Ben Stokes pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, so there was no need for a formal hearing," a statement from the ICC said.
As a result, Sri Lanka, who have a 66.67%, have taken over England to be second. Australia lead the World Test Championship table with a 100 percentage point,s having won all three of their matches till now.
India have 12 points from three matches and 33.33 percentage points.
On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Ahsan Raza, and fourth umpire Graham Lloyd levelled the charge.
India and England play the next Test from July 23 at Old Trafford in Manchester. A win for either of them can be a big boon.
