SKIM Act would tap in federal law enforcement to handle EBT thefts
A months-long investigation by 17 News uncovered a Romanian Crime Ring behind the card skimming, but the problem went beyond county lines.
'$100,00 dollars a month that were stolen before, prior to 2021,' said Congressman Vince Fong, representing California's 20th District. 'Now we're looking at $10 million being stolen a month.'
It seems the state ignored this issue for far too long.
'I have my criticism of the state government,' said Fong.

Fong said it's time the federal government steps in. Officials presented the 'Stopping Klepto-card and Information Misuse Act'; SKIM Act for its initials on Monday.
Tapping in the general attorney and homeland security to fight against welfare fraud.
'We need to tie all the dots together, especially when we have international crime rings that are participating not only within California, or within Kern County, but across state lines,' said Congressman Fong. 'So we have to have the ability for the federal law enforcement agency to coordinate and cooperate with state and local entities. Absolutely not, for the amount that's being stolen, there has to be real teeth to those penalties. We're going to work with the attorney general to raise it to as high as we can…we need it to the point where we can deter this criminal behavior.'
Congressman Fong said he hopes bringing national attention to this issue will lead to improving security measures in welfare programs nationwide.
The 'SKIM Act' has been presented to the judiciary committee, and if approved, it will be sent to the house for vote.

Tish James wages SNAP lawfare to protect illegal immigrants
Moving to protect lawbreakers, not taxpayers, state Attorney General Tish James is again suing the Trump administration, this time to block it from getting the names of illegal aliens getting SNAP benefits, a/k/a food stamps. States administer the program, signing up SNAP beneficiaries, sending out the EBT cards (loaded with federal-taxpayer cash) — and supposedly policing eligibility . . . except many don't bother. So SNAP fraud is over $10 billion a year and rising, and Team Trump wants to crack down — particularly on border-jumpers who are limited to at most one year of benefits if the Biden crew granted a temporary OK to enter the interior. Advertisement Anyone illegally collecting SNAP is stealing: States should be lining up to help the feds find and (where appropriate) deport these crooks. But James, eager to counter everything Trump, insists the feds' request for SNAP data is simply more of the prez's 'cruel and chaotic' immigration agenda — and 'unacceptable' (a favorite Tishism). Hmmm. Surely the truly chaotic policy was waving in millions of unvetted migrants, while springing violent-criminal 'asylum seekers' from jail to let them kill Americans is the real cruelty. Advertisement And handing out anti-poverty cash to people who don't qualify for it should be grossly unacceptable. This suit is just the latest in James' long history of 'performative' litigation, almost always losing. Keep up with today's most important news Stay up on the very latest with Evening Update. Advertisement She sued to stop the president from dismantling the Department of Education (and lost); she sued to prevent him from firing federal workers (and lost); she sued to keep DOGE from accessing Social Security data (and is losing). New York is among the worst states in administering SNAP; James could go after the tens of millions of dollars in organized food-stamp fraud. But that wouldn't win her the liberal-media spotlight, so state taxpayers get to underwrite yet another losing lawsuit. New York sure could use an AG who doesn't just showboat for the national stage. How about working for the people for once, General James?

Lorry deaths people smuggler gets extra jail time for not paying compensation
A haulage boss who admitted the manslaughter of 39 people who were found in the back of a lorry must serve an extra year and four months in jail after failing to pay the full amount of compensation ordered to families. Ronan Hughes was jailed for 20 years in 2021 for the manslaughter of the Vietnamese nationals, aged between 15 and 44, found in a vehicle in Essex on October 22 2019. The victims died in sweltering conditions as they were transported in an airtight container from Zeebrugge in Belgium to Purfleet. Hughes, 45, of Armagh, Northern Ireland, was taken back to court in 2024 and ordered to pay more than £182,000 in compensation to the families of victims. He has paid £58,380 towards the confiscation order, but as of Tuesday – and including the interest accrued – he still owed more than £127,000. The CPS Proceeds of Crime Division invited a court to impose an additional sentence on Hughes in light of his failure to pay the confiscation order. He appeared before Folkstone Magistrates' Court for an enforcement hearing on Tuesday and the judge ordered that he serve an additional year and four months in prison, the CPS said. Heather Chalk, specialist prosecutor for the CPS, said: 'Ronan Hughes led an unscrupulous network of organised criminals that sought to profit from smuggling desperate people. 'It is devastating that 39 vulnerable people lost their lives because of their greed and recklessness. 'The CPS is committed to working with law enforcement to dismantle these smuggling networks and prevent them from profiting from their criminality. 'Hughes failed to pay back his confiscation order in full and, as a result, he will be serving additional time in jail.' In addition to Hughes, four other men were jailed for between 13 and 27 years for the manslaughter of the men, women and children. They are: Romanian mechanic Gheorghe Nica, 48; Romanian Marius Mihai Draghici, 52, who was described as Nica's 'second-in-command'; lorry driver Maurice Robinson, 30, of Craigavon, who found the bodies; and Eamonn Harrison, 28, of Co Down, who had collected the victims on the continent. To date, more than £283,000 in ill-gotten gains has been ordered to be paid by defendants as compensation to the victims' families.
