Another worker dies at SPC factory in conveyor belt accident

Korea Herald19-05-2025
A worker in her 50s died early Monday after becoming trapped on a moving conveyor belt at SPC Samlip's bread factory in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, police said.
According to the Siheung Police Station, the incident occurred at around 3 a.m. while the victim was applying lubricant to the conveyor belt of a bread production machine.
Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing factory personnel to determine the cause of the accident. They are also investigating whether the factory violated safety regulations. If negligence is confirmed, relevant officials could face charges of professional negligence resulting in death.
The incident marks yet another workplace accident at SPC-affiliated companies, which have faced public criticism and consumer boycotts in recent years over recurring worker injuries and fatalities.
In October 2022, a worker in her 20s died after being pulled into a sauce mixer at SPC's affiliate SPL bread factory in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province. In November 2023, a steel conveyor fell on a worker's head at a logistics warehouse at the same factory. The worker, who was in their 20s, was wearing a safety helmet and avoided serious injury.
In August 2023, a woman in her 50s died after becoming trapped in a dough-brake machine. And in January of this year, a worker in their 50s had three fingers severed after their hand became caught in a rice processing machine at an SPC Shany factory in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.
Following the 2022 Pyeongtaek incident, four officials, including then SPC CEO Kang Dong-suk, were indicted on charges of violating the Serious Accidents Punishment Act and professional negligence resulting in death.
In a trial held in January this year, Kang was sentenced to one year in prison, suspended for two years. Three other officials received sentences of four to six months, also suspended for two years. The company was fined 100 million won ($71,000).

NewJeans, Ador remain locked in high-stakes legal battle over exclusive contract

The girl group continues to accuse agency of mismanagement, while Ador says contract termination is baseless and driven by former CEO Min Hee-jin The legal standoff between K-pop girl group NewJeans and its agency Ador continues to escalate, with both sides presenting conflicting arguments over the validity of the group's exclusive contract. The Seoul Central District Court on Thursday held the third hearing in Ador's lawsuit seeking to confirm the enforceability of its contract with the five-member group. The NewJeans members, who attempted to terminate their contracts unilaterally in November, were not present in court; only their legal representatives attended. NewJeans' attorneys attributed the dispute to a now-concluded internal audit of former Ador CEO Min Hee-jin, which was initiated by parent company Hybe in May 2024. They argued that the audit — and Hybe's subsequent attempt to remove Min — were based on unfounded suspicions. On July 18, police cleared Min of criminal breach of trust allegations filed by Hybe last year; Hybe plans to appeal. The group's legal team further claimed that Ador failed to meet fundamental management responsibilities, alleging that this breach justified the artists' attempt to sever ties. Ador rejected the accusations, asserting that the reasons for contract termination have shifted over time and appear to have been constructed by NewJeans and their legal team retroactively. 'This is an unreasonable attempt to invalidate the contracts after the fact,' said a lawyer for Ador. The agency emphasized its financial investment in NewJeans, citing over 21 billion won ($15.3 million) spent on the group's development and debut. This included 7 billion won for the group's debut album and 2 billion won for music videos. 'Thanks to this support, NewJeans achieved explosive success — something even the court has acknowledged,' Ador's legal representative said. 'Yet despite this, the group attempted to unilaterally cancel its contracts just two years after its debut. Such a move cannot be permitted.' Ador also claimed that Min was the driving force behind the group's attempted departure. According to the agency's attorney, private messages exchanged between Min and former Ador executives revealed that she had been planning to 'take' NewJeans as early as three years ago. The messages allegedly outlined strategies for terminating the exclusive contract, including orchestrating plagiarism accusations against another Hybe-affiliated girl group, Illit, and manipulating media narratives. The agency also alleged that the legal notice to terminate the contract was drafted by Min's legal representatives, further pointing to her involvement. Responding to accusations of mismanagement, Ador maintained it had upheld its responsibilities and noted that each member had already received over 5 billion won in earnings. 'The agency is still preparing for the group's comeback,' Ador said. 'Our staff are waiting for the day they return.'

Hybe chairman referred to prosecution over alleged unfair trading

Financial authorities on Wednesday referred Bang Si-hyuk, chairman and founder of K-pop powerhouse Hybe, to the prosecution over alleged fraudulent securities transactions related to the company's listing, officials said. The Securities and Futures Commission under the Financial Services Commission decided to forward the complaint against Bang and three former Hybe officials for their alleged violation of the Capital Markets Act regarding the company's initial public offering. Bang is accused of misleading investors, including venture capital firms, in 2019 into believing that Hybe's IPO would be delayed and inducing them to sell their shares to a special purpose company (SPC) established by a private equity fund created and funded by Hybe executives. Investors sold their shares to the SPC, but financial authorities determined that Hybe was, at the time, already in the process of preparing for its listing. After the company went public, the SPC sold its shares, and Bang reportedly received 30 percent of the profit from the share sale in accordance with a prior shareholder agreement. "We plan to actively cooperate with the prosecution's investigation to thoroughly uncover the allegations surrounding this high-profile case," the SFC said. "Any violations found will be thoroughly investigated and strictly punished." Hybe earlier apologized for the allegations related to the IPO process, while claiming that the listing was carried out in compliance with relevant laws and regulations. (Yonhap)

'Ex-PM belatedly endorsed martial law decree, then destroyed document'

Probe find evidence suggesting further breaches in official process during Yoon Suk Yeol's much-disputed martial law declaration Former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo was found to have signed documents belatedly formalizing former President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law late last year. He later requested that the documents be destroyed, according to an ongoing investigation into Yoon's alleged insurrection and abuse of power, local media reported Tuesday. The special counsel team, led by special prosecutor Cho Eun-suk, has reportedly acquired evidence of such actions during the questioning of former Yoon aide Kang Eui-gu. Kang was a high-ranking official at the presidential office at the time who asked Han to sign the document related to the emergency martial law declaration. Article 82 of the Constitution requires the signature of the prime minister and Cabinet members for such acts by the president, including those related to military affairs. But Han's alleged signing of the documents took place after martial law was declared, and the initial declaration sent to the Cabinet did not bear Han's signature. It was confirmed that Kang and Han spoke by phone on Dec. 5, a full day after martial law was lifted following a parliamentary vote demanding its repeal. Han is believed to have signed the document -- along with former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, a key figure in the alleged insurrection -- but later requested that Kang discard it, saying that producing the document after martial law had already been imposed could lead to controversy. Former President Yoon reportedly said he did not see how that could be an issue, but authorized the document to be destroyed anyway. Kang believed to have forged minutes of Cabinet meeting Kang is also suspected of forging the official minutes of the Cabinet meeting where former President Yoon announced his plan to impose martial law. Though the meeting is believed to have lasted only about five minutes, the minutes made it look like it lasted for 40 minutes. Kang has told the prosecution that he called each minister to notify them of the unscheduled Cabinet meeting, but claimed that he had no knowledge of the imminent martial law declaration at the time. Whether Yoon and his aides violated the right of Cabinet members to deliberate on a presidential decision is a question linked to the charge of abuse of power. Yoon is currently under criminal investigation for allegedly leading an insurrection by illegally declaring martial law and abusing his power in the process. His impeachment was confirmed in April, leading to his removal from office and an early election to choose the country's new leader in June.
