House axes vote on Israel boycott bill: ‘Bowed to extreme-right forces'
Republican House leaders axed a planned vote on Monday for a bill intended to protect Israel from boycotts, amid a backlash from some conservatives over free speech concerns.
Former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz compared the provisions in the legislation to the 10th biblical plague of Egypt: the death of the firstborn.

'If this bill becomes law, how many Israeli products do I need in my home to avoid fines or prison?' Gaetz asked. 'If I leave an Israeli-made product outside my home, is it the 2025 version of lamb's blood that keeps my family safe?'
The bipartisan bill, titled the International Governmental Organizations Anti-Boycott Act, would extend existing anti-boycott legislation that bars Americans from complying with bans imposed by foreign countries to also forbid compliance with boycotts imposed by international governmental organizations, like the United Nations.

The legislation doesn't mention Israel explicitly, but the Jewish state has long been the target of international boycott efforts.

Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) were among Republicans to speak out against the bill.
'Americans have the right to boycott, and penalizing this risks free speech,' Luna wrote. 'I reject and vehemently condemn antisemitism, but I cannot violate the First Amendment.'
A spokesman for Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.), a co-sponsor of the bill, slammed the Republican leadership for caving to Greene, who speculated in 2018 that the Rothschilds might have caused wildfires in California by 'beaming the sun's energy back to earth.'

'It's beyond outrageous and offensive that House leadership bowed to extreme-right forces and pulled this commonsense, bipartisan bill that makes antisemitic and hate-driven boycotts illegal,' Tony Wen, Gottheimer's communications director, told JNS.
'Who was behind this effort?' Wen said. 'None other than a member of Congress, who once claimed that Jews have space lasers, and another who refused to condemn Hamas. Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Thomas Massie should be ashamed of themselves.'
The bill's sponsor, Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), defended the legislation on the grounds that the underlying anti-boycott act was signed into law by U.S. President Donald Trump in 2018. Lawler also criticized Greene for backing international governmental organizations.
'This is simply holding the United Nations accountable,' Lawler wrote. 'Was President Trump virtue signaling when he signed the original bill? And when did you become a defender of the United Nations?'

On Friday, the office of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) released a schedule of votes for Monday that included the bill, but the updated House schedule on Monday morning did not include it. (JNS sought comment from Scalise and Lawler.)
Legal challenges arguing that similar state-level anti-boycott legislation violates the First Amendment have a poor record in court.
In 2023, the Fifth, Eighth and 11th Circuit Courts of Appeals each upheld state laws designed to counter the anti-Israel boycott, divestment and sanctions movement in separate cases. The Supreme Court has declined to consider appeals to those rulings.

US imposes sanctions on Los Chapitos, a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel
By Daphne Psaledakis WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The United States on Monday imposed sanctions on Los Chapitos, a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, labeling it a Specially Designated Global Terrorist as President Donald Trump's administration seeks to tackle cross-border drug trafficking. The U.S. Treasury Department in a statement said it designated Los Chapitos under illicit drug and terrorism authorities, accusing it of facilitating trafficking and production of fentanyl, the lethally potent opioid. Two of its fugitive leaders, both sons of convicted Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, were also hit with sanctions, according to the Treasury Department. "Los Chapitos is a powerful, hyperviolent faction of the Sinaloa Cartel at the forefront of fentanyl trafficking into the United States," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in the statement. "At the Department of the Treasury, we are executing on President Trump's mandate to completely eliminate drug cartels and take on violent leaders like 'El Chapo's' children. Treasury is maximizing all available tools to stop the fentanyl crisis and help save lives." The Treasury on Monday also imposed sanctions on what it said was a regional network of Los Chapitos associates and businesses based in Mexico. Monday's action freezes any of their U.S. assets and generally bars Americans from dealing with them. Those that engage in certain transactions with the sanctioned parties also risk being hit with sanctions. The move comes after the Trump administration in February designated Tren de Aragua, the Sinaloa Cartel and other drug cartels as global terrorist organizations. Trump, a Republican, issued an executive order after taking office on January 20 that called on officials to evaluate whether any criminal cartels or transnational gangs should be designated as terrorism groups. The U.S. terrorism designations have come alongside a government crackdown on migration, with thousands of foreigners being deported to third countries in Latin America.

Israel delivered Patriot systems to Ukraine
Patriot air defence systems that previously protected Israel's airspace have been deployed in Ukraine. Source: Israeli Ambassador to Ukraine Michael Brodsky in an interview with Ukrainian journalist Mariia Dovbenko, as reported by Mezha Media, a technology and IT news platform within Ukrainska Pravda's holding company Quote from Brodsky: "There is a system very well known here in Ukraine – the Patriot system – which once saved us in the early 1990s during the first Gulf War. Back then, we received Patriot systems from the United States. And, by the way, these systems are now in Ukraine. These are Israeli systems that were in service in Israel in the early 1990s. We agreed to transfer them to Ukraine. Unfortunately, this has not been widely discussed, but when people say that Israel hasn't provided military aid, that's not true." Details: In May 2024, it was reported that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) would stop using the American-made Patriot air defence systems. They are being replaced by systems based on more advanced technologies. Ukraine has repeatedly appealed to its partners for Patriot systems to defend against large-scale Russian attacks. These systems have proven highly effective, particularly in intercepting Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missiles. In May 2023, a Patriot system successfully intercepted the first Kinzhal missile over Kyiv – a turning point in Ukraine's defence against this type of Russian weapon. The effective use of Patriots strengthened the air defence of Ukrainian cities. However, Ukraine still faces a shortage of such systems. Background: In April 2025, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine was ready to purchase 10 Patriot systems from the United States for US$15 billion, with European partners willing to support the financing. In May 2025, The New York Times reported that a Patriot system previously based in Israel would be sent to Ukraine after undergoing modernisation. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!

Israel diverts aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg, who in a video says she's been 'kidnapped'
LONDON -- The Israeli Foreign Ministry said early Monday that Israeli forces had boarded and diverted a privately owned ship carrying Swedish human rights activist Greta Thunberg and several others, who said they were attempting to bring humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The boat, the Madleen, was "safely making its way to the shores of Israel," the ministry said in a statement, deriding the efforts by those aboard as a "media provocation." "The passengers are expected to return to their home countries," the ministry said. The ship had been approaching the coast of the Gaza Strip with the stated aim of breaking an Israeli blockade on aid via the sea and delivering humanitarian supplies to the territory. According to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition, the group that organized the aid trip, the 12 people on board were unarmed. "The ship was unlawfully boarded, its unarmed civilian crew abducted, and its life-saving cargo -- including baby formula, food and medical supplies -- confiscated," the coalition said in a statement on Monday. The sea blockade of Gaza predates the current conflict that started when Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and has been in place since Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in June 2007. MORE: Israel arming Gaza militias fighting Hamas, Netanyahu says Israeli officials released images of Thunberg and others wearing orange life vests and sitting closely together on the Madleen. People in Israel military uniforms are seen in the video handing bread and water to the activists. The ministry also released a separate image of Thunberg, in which a soldier is handing her bread and water. The ministry accompanied that image with a statement saying Thunberg was "currently on her way to Israel, safe and in good spirits." A video posted by the coalition appeared to rebuke the characterization that Thunberg was in "good spirits." "If you see this video we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces or forces that support Israel," Thunberg says in a video that was shot prior to the vessel being intercepted. In the video, which was verified by ABC News after it was posted online, Thunberg urged her "friends, family and comrades" to apply pressure on the Swedish government to push for their release "as soon as possible." Other activists onboard recorded similar messages. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in a statement to social media that he had "instructed the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] to show the flotilla passengers the video of the horrors of the October 7 massacre when they arrive at the port of Ashdod." Katz had prior to the ship being diverted announced that he had instructed the IDF to act so that the flotilla "does not reach Gaza." The statement from Katz said the IDF had been instructed to stop the ship from reaching Gaza "and to take any measures necessary to do so."
