Kyohei Yamasawa sets a benchmark as the top regular season scorer in Japan Rugby League One
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Flyhalf Kyohei Yamasawa has become the first home grown player to top the regular season scoring list in Japan Rugby League One in his first full season for the Saitama Panasonic Wild Knights.
The 26-year-old emerged from the shadow of his test-capped elder brother, Takuya, by scoring 209 points in 16 appearances in the Japanese professional tournament which attracts some of the world's best players.
He finished the regular season ahead of Toyota Brave Lupus fullback Takuro Matsunada with 174 points and Bryn Gatland, the New Zealand-born son of former Wales and British and Irish Lions coach Warren Gatland, who scored 169 points for the Kobelco Kobe Steelers.
Former Wallabies flyhalf Bernard Foley was sixth on the list this season with 145 points.
Japan League One is in its fourth season and Yamasawa is the fourth different player to lead the regular season scoring list, following Gatland, Foley and All Blacks flyhalf Damian McKenzie.
Yamasawa became the Wild Knights' only goalkicking option when his brother, Takuya, was sidelined by injury after only two matches.
Brave Lupus winger Jone Naikabula was the leading try-scorer in the regular season with 15.

Create Account The four-time NFL MVP quarterback and Super Bowl champion said Tuesday after his first practice with the Steelers that he got married 'a couple months ago.' Rodgers was spotted wearing a ring on his left ring finger in a photo the Steelers shared after the 41-year-old signed a one-year deal to join the team for the 2025 season. When asked if the ring was an indication he was married, Rodgers replied, 'Yeah, it's a wedding ring.' He wore the ring on Tuesday while participating in drills with his new team. Rodgers has revealed little about his bride. During an appearance on 'The Pat McAfee Show' last fall, he mentioned he was dating a woman named Brittani but offered no other details. His previous dating history includes long-term relationships with race car driver Danica Patrick and actors Olivia Munn and Shailene Woodley. NHL Sunshine Girls Sunshine Girls Columnists News

Anti-doping watchdog urges US authorities to shut down planned drug-fueled event in Las Vegas
LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The global watchdog of doping in sports said Wednesday it will urge public authorities to shut down the drug-fueled Enhanced Games planned in Las Vegas next year. 'We will urge the U.S. authorities to find legal ways to block this initiative,' World Anti-Doping Agency president Witold Banka said on the sidelines of a meeting of Olympic sports bodies. Organizers of the games scheduled next May promise $1 million bonuses to beat world record times by athletes who will be encouraged to use performance-enhancing drugs under medical supervision. 'This initiative seeks to normalize the use of potentially dangerous drugs,' Banka told leaders of Summer Olympics sports at the annual meeting of their umbrella group, known as ASOIF. 'For the sake of athlete health and the purity of sport of course it must be stopped,' the WADA leader said. Banka, a former sports minister in Poland, suggested the Enhanced Games could be legally exposed in the state of Nevada or federally. 'This is something that has to be explored from the legal perspective,' he told The Associated Press. 'I cannot imagine, for instance, doctors giving the drugs to the athletes. It is completely against the values of their work.' 'The main thing is this event is going to be located in the U.S. so I think there is a strong role to be played by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency,' said Banka, whose Montreal-based organization has long had a troubled relationship with the American agency. USADA's chief executive, Travis Tygart, has described the Enhanced Games as a 'dangerous clown show that puts profit over principle.' Investors in the project — which aims to sell personalized supplements and substances plans to subscribers — include one group backed by Donald Trump Jr. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. The doping-backed project was 'very embarrassing' for the U.S., Banka suggested, given its proximity to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. 'I think the main responsibility is on USADA's shoulders, who need to take the lead because it is in their country,' he said. Swimming's governing body World Aquatics said last week it will ban athletes, coaches and officials who take part in the Enhanced Games. ___ AP sports:

Bayer Leverkusen signs promising young defender Axel Tape from PSG
LEVERKUSEN, Germany (AP) — Bayer Leverkusen has signed France youth international Axel Tape on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain's under-19 team. The 17-year-old Tape, a tall defender, signed a 'long-term' contract with Leverkusen, the Bundesliga club said Wednesday. 'Tape is a versatile defensive player, a good footballer with pace, athleticism, and well-developed game-intelligence,' Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes said. 'We see great potential in Axel, and signing him on a free transfer is an important building block in our future-oriented squad planning.' Tape helped PSG's under-19 team win the French championship last weekend. He made three appearances for the senior team. He was reportedly also a target for Eintracht Frankfurt and Tottenham Hotspur. Tape is the second promising young player Leverkusen has signed this offseason after the 19-year-old Ibrahim Maza from Hertha Berlin. The club is undergoing a shakeup of the squad following coach Xabi Alonso's departure to Real Madrid. Team captain Johnathan Tah did not renew his contract and joined league rival Bayern Munich, and wing-back Jeremie Frimpong switched to Liverpool. Star player Florian Wirtz is expected to complete a record-breaking transfer to Liverpool in the coming days. The club appointed former Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag as Alonso's replacement, and last week signed Netherlands goalkeeper Mark Flekken from Brentford. Leverkusen also signed 21-year-old defender Tim Oermann from relegated Bochum and promptly loaned him to Austrian champion Sturm Graz. Promising midfielder Francis Onyeka went in the other direction to Bochum on loan for next season. ___ AP soccer:
