J&K CM Omar Abdullah, Ministers visit Srinagar's Mazar-e-Shuhada, says ‘barriers were raised, but so was our resolve'
Mr. Abdullah was seen walking up to the Naqsbandh Sahib shrine at Khawaja Bazar, where 22 civilians killed during an uprising against the Dogra ruler are buried. The Chief Minister scaled the fenced wall of the premises because the security forces had blocked the entrance of the graveyard. A police officer made a bid to stop the J&K Chief Minister from offering 'fateha' at the graveyard.
National Conference (NC) president Dr. Farooq Abdullah also joined the party leaders to offer floral tributes and recite special prayers for the deceased civilians. A senior Cabinet minister, Sakina Ittoo, rode a two-wheeler to avoid the security checkpoints and reached the site.
It comes a day after the L-G administration barred the government and regional parties from paying tributes at the site. The BJP had described the deceased civilians as 'rioters'. The L-G administration dropped July 13 from the official holiday calendar of J&K after the Centre ended J&K's special status in 2019.

'I was pushed, shoved and grappled by 'protectors of the law'. My crime? Wanting to offer Fatiha at the graves of the martyrs of 13th July 1931. The men in uniform sometimes forget the law. I won't be stopped and I won't be browbeaten. Barriers were raised, but so was our resolve,' Mr. Abdullah said.
Targeting J&K L-G Manoj Sinha, Mr. Abdullah said, 'It is unfortunate. Those who claim their only responsibility is law and order — we were not allowed to offer 'fateha' on July 13. When I told the control room that I intended to visit, a bunker vehicle was parked outside my residence till midnight (on Sunday). Even today they (security forces) tried to stop us by erecting vehicles. If the restrictions were for July 13, under what law was I stopped today?' Mr. Abdullah said.
He said this country is known as a free country, 'but they (the L-G administration) think we are their slaves'. 'We are not their slaves. We are servants of our people. They even tried to tear our party flag. If they stop us on July 13, we will visit on the next day or next month. No one can stop us,' the Chief Minister said.
Visibly angry over the police action, NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq said it is for the first time in the history of India that 'an unelected government locked up an elected government'.
'What are they trying to tell the world that there is no democracy in J&K? What saddens us more is that no one in Delhi condemned the action. We have been paying tributes to these martyrs for decades in J&K. Those taking decisions do not realise the ground realities of J&K,' Mr. Sadiq said.
Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the J&K L-G administration's actions. 'What is wrong in visiting the graveyard of martyrs? This is not only unfortunate, it also snatches the democratic right of a citizen. What happened this morning to an elected Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is unacceptable. Shocking. Shameful,' Ms. Banerjee said, in a tweet.

Meanwhile, J&K Peoples Conference (JKPC) president Sajad Lone said it was all scripted. 'For a moment I was impressed. But now that you have given a ball-by-ball commentary of your so-called struggle in reaching the Martyrs Graveyard, I will bet my life. It was all scripted,' Mr. Lone said.

L-G office's push for including Sanskrit in J&K schools not approved yet: J&K govt
The move of the Secretariat of Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to include Sanskrit as a mandatory or optional subject in schools in J&K not approved yet, the J&K government said on Saturday (July 19, 2025). A government spokesman said the L-G Secretariat had received a representation from Purshotam Lal Dube, who heads a non-governmental organisation, for inclusion of Sanskrit in the schools and colleges of J&K under the provisions of NEP 2020. 'The communication was forwarded to the Higher and the School Education department by the L-G Secretariat. The department has not proposed, approved, or initiated any process for the inclusion of Sanskrit as a mandatory or optional subject in schools across Jammu & Kashmir,' the government spokesman said. The spokesman said the L-G office's communication was forwarded by the General Administration Department (GAD) to Director School Education Jammu and Kashmir for furnishing of comments in the matter. 'The department follows a transparent and consultative process for curriculum changes, in line with NEP 2020. Any future decision regarding the inclusion of new subjects will be officially communicated through proper channels after due deliberation,' the spokesman said. Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party on Saturday accused the Omar Abdullah government of excluding Urdu from digitisation of land records in J&K. 'Years before the 2024 government's formation, the J&K administration allegedly gave a multi-crore land digitisation contract to a company named 'Ramtech.' The company scanned every single land document across districts but digitised only Srinagar and Jammu in three years,' PDP leader and legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Parra said. He said Mr. Abdullah's silence was questionable. 'Where's the accountability for the crores spent? And why is the Omar Abdullah government now erasing Urdu, one of the official languages from the new digitisation process? I'm sure the CM would be aware of this issue since he also happens to hold the revenue portfolio,' Mr. Parra said.

India's water will now flow only for its people, asserts J&K L-G on Indus Waters Treaty's abeyance
Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday (July 19, 2025) said India's waters will flow for its people and stop in the country only, while referring to the now-in-abeyance Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). 'India's water will now flow for India, stop in India, and serve the people of India. India will have full control over the Jhelum and Chenab rivers,' the L-G said. He made these remarks while releasing author Sant Kumar Sharma's book Indus Waters Treaty: Mirroring the Facts. Paying homage to 26 civilians killed in the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 this year, Mr. Sinha said, 'We will never forget April 22 when Pakistan-born and trained terrorists killed our innocent civilians. But April 23 is equally an important date when Prime Minister Narendra Modi put in abeyance the IWT. Pakistan had never dreamt that before launching a military operation, India would act in a way that will rattle Pakistan,' Mr. Sinha said. 'Pakistan will face consequences' He said it was for the first time since Pakistan as an aggressor fought three wars with India in 1965, 1971 and 1999 that the treaty signed before these wars was abandoned. 'For decades, Indian water was irrigating the land of terrorist Pakistan and feeding its people. After the Pahalgam terror attack, it was made clear that water and blood, terror and talks and terror and trade will not go together,' the L-G said. He said the country's move on the IWT will make the future generations of Pakistan face the consequences. The IWT supported 16 million hectares of farmland and 80% of irrigation in Pakistan. 'Pakistan will face serious economic challenges now,' he added. Mr. Sinha said the decision will also start a new phase of infrastructure and economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier in the day, Mr. Sinha, in a separate function in Jammu, said every citizen of J&K has the onerous responsibility to build a terror-free and drug-free UT. He said revival of Vedic knowledge and its integration into the school curriculum was crucial to offer the young generation great classics of world literature, values and ideals of our ancient civilisation and also a treasure of knowledge in science, arts, humanities and mathematics. The L-G was speaking at the two-day Mahasammelan organised by Arya Pratinidhi Sabha, Jammu and Kashmir to commemorate the 200th birth anniversary of Maharshi Dayananda Saraswati and the 150th anniversary of the founding of Arya Samaj. Paying tributes to the Army, J&K Police and Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) personnel for making the supreme sacrifice for J&K's peace and progress, Mr. Sinha said: 'There are few elements who speak the language of TRF (The Resistance Front). Police administration and security forces are committed to ensure peace and action against such elements as per the law.'

Hurriyat irrelevant, Kashmiris must look for place in India: Separatist leader Bilal Lone
Srinagar: Bilal Lone, separatist leader and son of slain senior separatist leader Abdul Gani Lone, said on Saturday that the separatist Hurriyat Conference is irrelevant and Kashmiris must look for their space within India. Bilal Lone is the younger brother of Sajad Gani Lone, former minister and chief of the Peoples Conference (NC). In an interview today, Bilal Lone said that the separatist Hurriyat Conference is itself responsible for becoming irrelevant, adding that the Hurriyat Conference has become non-functional. He blamed Pakistan for creating a mess in Kashmir. He said that his change of state owed itself to the motivation of the next generation of Kashmir, whom he urged to see India as India since it is a very big power. He said the present generation has a right to know the truth about what happened in Kashmir during the last 35 years. He said Kashmiris have to realise that the 'politics of exploitation' must stop. While admitting that the people of Kashmir had reposed their trust in the Hurriyat Conference, Bilal said that at present the Hurriyat is nowhere, and it is time for the people to accept the change. He said Pakistan made statements, but nothing happened in reality, so Pakistan must play a soothing role in Kashmir's progress rather than create a mess here. He claimed that he had no regret for being on the other side, opposing India, but had big regret for failing to achieve anything. Bilal Lone said his change of stand was not to become the chief minister, but he now stands for a genuine political process.
