Parliamentarians Key To Peace, Stability In Region, Says AIPA
PHNOM PENH, July 15 (Bernama) -- Parliamentarians across Southeast Asia must take on a more active role in promoting diplomacy and stability amid rising geopolitical tensions.
This was the key message from top speakers at the 16th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) Caucus held in Phnom Penh, who stressed that the role of lawmakers is more crucial than ever.
ASEAN Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn also called on parliamentarians to champion peace and regional stability.
He said that in the interconnected yet fragmented world, sustainable peace is not merely the absence of war or conflict, but the presence of justice, understanding, and inclusivity.
'In an era marked by geopolitical tensions and proliferation of divisive narratives, the role of parliamentarians as bridge builders and peace makers has become more crucial today than before,' Kao said in his keynote remarks.
The heads of AIPA from ASEAN member states and Timor-Leste are participating in the two-day event, which is being held at the National Assembly hall in the capital.
'This caucus serves as a beacon of hope, demonstrating true structure of dialogue, mutual respect, and sheer commitment to peaceful resolution. We can address the most complex challenges facing the region or the world,' said Kao.
The theme of the meeting is 'Peace Through Dialogue: The Parliamentary Path Forward' — emphasising the role of parliamentary diplomacy in achieving peace and prosperity.

Stay Away From july 26 Rally, Chief Secretary Reminds Civil Servants
PUTRAJAYA, July 20 (Bernama) -- Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar has reminded civil servants not to participate in a rally scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday (July 26). He said it is inappropriate for civil servants to join such a gathering, as doing so would be inconsistent with the principle of 'Loyalty to King and Country', as enshrined in the Rukun Negara (National Principles). 'They shouldn't go. They are civil servants, (so) how can they join? Every day, every week, we recite the Loyalty to King and Country pledge. Have they forgotten? Be grateful to the King and the Country,' he said.

Sabah allocates RM136 million for scholarships to boost human capital
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has set aside RM136 million for the Sabah State Government Scholarship (BKNS) this year, marking its highest allocation to date. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor emphasised the state's dedication to nurturing competitive human capital through accessible higher education. The allocation has seen a significant increase from RM50 million in 2020, reflecting the state's resolve to support students from all socio-economic backgrounds. 'This is the government's long-term investment project to develop quality human capital that is competitive. We don't want young Sabahans to be left behind in education due to financial constraints,' Hajiji said. His speech was delivered by Sabah Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif during the Sabah university student aid presentation (SENTOSA) at Universiti Malaysia Sabah. A total of 4,170 students will benefit from the scholarship programme this year, aligning with the Sabah Maju Jaya initiative to strengthen education as a key driver of development. Beyond scholarships, the state has allocated RM77.5 million for 13 education initiatives, including one-off cash aid for registrations, computer purchase assistance, and flight fare support for Sabah students. Additionally, the Sabah State Education Fund, introduced in June 2022, has assisted 10,104 recipients with RM15.8 million in funding. - Bernama

Stop the 'satay politics' of fanning flames, Asyraf urges Umno members
BUKIT GANTANG: Umno members at all levels must immediately put an end to the culture of "satay politics" if the party wants to regain its strength and public support in the 16th General Election, says Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki. The Umno secretary-general used the satay analogy for politics to describe the internal divisions that have plagued Umno, saying this is among the key factors weakening the party. "Unity is fundamental. We must avoid the culture of stoking tension, forming factions and fuelling conflict among party leaders and members," he said. "There are those who skewer, fan the flames, grill and flip things back and forth (sow discord). All of this must stop," he said after opening the Bukit Gantang Umno meeting here on Sunday (July 20). Asyraf Wajdi added that Umno must also return to its core foundation and principles of defending the interests of religion, race and the nation. He said anything that could distract the party from that mission, including the culture of "satay" politics, must be stopped. – Bernama
