NFL Preseason Has New Meaning For Bengals, Colts, Jags, Vikings

Forbes6 hours ago
The NFL preseason matters for the first time in years. The league has Joe Burrow to thank for it.
The Cincinnati Bengals quarterback lobbied head coach Zac Taylor for months during the offseason that he wanted to play in the preseason because he wanted to get the work in before the season kicked off in earnest. He won his argument as he started against the Eagles in Cincinnati's opening summer game and completed 9 of 10 passes for 123 yards with two touchdowns. He was razor sharp and now he will have confidence that he is ready to start the season.
'We've still got a ways to go,' Burrow said. 'But it was a good start. It's just good to play football again. We got 15 reps tonight, so we're 15 reps better.'
Preseason has always mattered for rookies and backups who are trying to make the roster, but starters have been excused from competing for years.
The Indianapolis Colts have a major quarterback battle on their hands between Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson. Jones gained an early edge in training camp and that played out as the Colts met the Ravens in their first preseason game. Jones completed 10 of 21 passes for 144 yards and avoided turnovers, while Richardson completed 2 of 3 passes and then came out of the game after dislocating his right pinkie.
Richardson has already returned to practice for the Colts, but part of the reason he got hurt is that he didn't read the Baltimore Ravens defense correctly and he took a hard sack. Richardson's inability to stay healthy has been a big issue as he prepares to begin his third season in the NFL.
Joey Bosa took positive steps in his debut with the Buffalo Bills. Bosa is an edge rusher who does not have the kind of earth-shattering speed that can make him a dynamic performer. Bosa's greatest strength is his power and that aspect of his game was on display against the New York Giants. The big question is whether Bosa can stay healthy, and he passed his first test. He looked sharp as a run defender and also demonstrated his power move when rushing the passer.
Rookie Travis Hunter made his preseason debut for the Jacksonville Jaguars, playing both offense and defense against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Hunter got his feet wet by making two catches for nine yards. He also had a chance to make an open-field tackle and he failed to bring his man down.
Hunter breathed a sigh of relief after the game. 'I felt great,' he said. 'A little nervous, but it felt great. It definitely settled down when I got the first catch, really when the first play started.'
McCarthy returns to the show
Hunter was not the only high-profile player to feel a bit of relief after getting a chance to show what he could do in a game. Minnesota Vikings second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy was back at U.S. Bank Stadium a year after making his debut in 2024. McCarthy tore his meniscus in that game against the Las Vegas Raiders, and he finally had a chance to get back into action against the Houston Texans.
He played the first series for head coach Kevin O'Connell and completed 4 of 7 passes for 30 yards and also ran one time for eight yards and picked up a first down. Most importantly, he had a chance to shake off the rust and demonstrate he was healthy.
O'Connell was satisfied with the performance of his QB1. 'There was a level of composure and poise to how he ran the show that was exactly what I was looking for,' O'Connell said. 'Now, we go back to work.'
Finally, second-year placekicker Cam Little of the Jaguars accomplished the seemingly impossible when he nailed a 70-yard field goal just before halftime against the Steelers. The NFL's all-time record is a 66-yard field goal kicked by former Baltimore Raven Justin Tucker.
Little's kick won't be in the record book because it is a preseason accomplishment, but it will be remembered. He made 27 of 29 FG attempts last season, and his leg strength is unchallenged. Little will be kicking in the NFL for many years to come.

Canton native Harold Fannin Jr. makes NFL debut in quiet night for Browns against Panthers

Former Canton McKinley standout Harold Fannin Jr. made his NFL debut Aug. 8 in the Browns' preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers. Fannin, who played collegiately at Bowling Green State University, was one of several players the Browns elected to limit or keep out completely in the 30-10 win. He played just six plays on offense, all over the first two series, as well as was in on two special teams plays. The No. 74 overall pick in April's draft is currently listed as the No. 2 tight end on the Browns' depth chart. He's expected to see ample playing time during Cleveland's two joint practices against the Philadelphia Eagles Aug. 13-14, although he's not likely to play in the preseason game between the teams Aug. 16. The Browns open the regular season Sept. 7 at home against the Cincinnati Bengals. Anthony Hernandez predicts a win for the champ at UFC 319: 'I think DDP is going to surprise everyone again'

Anthony Hernandez continues to show why he's a force to be reckoned with. UFC Vegas 109 was no exception for the No. 10-ranked middleweight contender "Fluffy" this past Saturday, as he brutally choked Roman Dolidze in the fourth round to secure his eighth straight win. The performance was arguably Hernandez's best, and it comes at a time when the division is loaded with contenders ready to try their hand at upsetting the champion, Dricus du Plessis. That's assuming du Plessis hangs onto the title he's held since January 2022. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] In his next title defense, the champion is tasked with the undefeated contender Khamzat Chimaev in UFC 319's main event this Saturday night. After his big win, Hernandez will make the trip to Chicago with the hopes he'll see his next opponent live and in person. "I want to go watch, and we'll see what UFC wants me to do," Hernandez said Monday on Uncrowned's "The Ariel Helwani Show." "If they want me to f***ing fight the champ, I'm in. I'm ready. I'm healthy. I just gotta get these stitches out, and I'll be right back in camp. "Hopefully, [UFC CEO] Dana [White] liked my statement. I was talking to him during the fight, and telling him how strong Roman was, but I didn't know he was holding the fence, my guy. But I was talking to Dana, having a great time, talking to 'D.C' (Daniel Cormier). I think they know that like, bro, quit f***ing playing with me. Give me the f***ing shot. ... I want to be the next champ." Regarding the upcoming title fight itself, few fights in 2025 have come with such anticipation throughout the MMA community. On the challenger's side, Chimaev's inevitable bid for UFC gold has been expected for years, only to face setbacks for one reason or another. However, despite Chimaev's historically dominant performances, his fellow contender Hernandez expects the reigning champion to finally be his undoing. "I think 'DDP' is gonna surprise everyone again," Hernandez predicted. "He's a f***ing tough motherf***er. He's got that dog in him, and hopefully I get to see him soon. "I really don't care [who it is]. It's like, respect at the end of the day. So whoever has the belt is who I want, because the belt is what changes lives. The person, I don't care. I'll fight everybody." Hernandez's main event appearance opposite Dolidze marked his second time headlining a UFC event, following a co-main event in Seattle in February. Although it was a solid performance and a second career victory over Brendan Allen, Hernandez was disappointed to go the distance and end up with a win via unanimous decision rather than a finish. Highlighting a rib injury that added to that fight's difficulty, this time around against Dolidze he was healthy enough to flow freely without injury. However, that didn't mean he wasn't met with a different type of adversity. "It was definitely my best performance, but I feel like you can always do better," Hernandez said. "You can always adjust. There was a couple times I got knocked off balance, so obviously, I gotta f***ing work on some s***, but I'll get back to the gym here soon, as these little stitches get taken out. I got some holes to fill, and we just keep plugging and playing. "That was just grabbing a motherf***er and letting him know. Like no, this ends now, bro. He was grabbing the cage, and he was grabbing my gloves. I get it. You don't wanna get your ass whooped, but you gotta take that s***, not cheat, but it is what it is." Ultimately, Hernandez wants to stay active and keep making his case to challenge for the title. This time next year, "Fluffy" is confident the landscape will shape up in his favor, expecting to win the title by midway through 2026. "Hopefully, I have that s*** by then, but however the world works out, it's worked out great for me," he said. "I'm gonna keep knocking it down one fight at a time if I have to. "I think I'm ready for the belt. Dana knows that. He's seen me fight a bunch of times, and if I have to keep showing out, I will. I really don't care. I'm built for war, man. That's the one thing I'm good at doing."

Sepp Straka withdraws from BMW Championship for family matter

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Sepp Straka has withdrawn from the BMW Championship because of a private family matter, but still plans to play in the Tour Championship next week. His manager, Butler Melnyk, did not disclose the nature of the family matter in a statement that said Straka had asked for privacy. That leaves a 49-man field for the BMW Championship at Caves Valley. Straka is not affected by the withdrawal. He is No. 5 in the FedEx Cup, too far behind to claim the $5 million prize that goes to the No. 1 player in the standings. Scottie Scheffler has clinched that. All 30 players who reach the Tour Championship start from scratch in pursuit of the FedEx Cup title and its $10 million bonus. Straka is No. 6 in the Ryder Cup standings for Europe. The Austrian native can be bumped out of the top six by Shane Lowry or Ludvig Aberg this week. The leading six players qualify for the European team after the Tour Championship and the British Masters. Either way, Straka is likely to be a pick. He is No. 10 in the world ranking. ___ AP golf:
