Hojgaard twins in top 10 at British Open for another cool sight at Royal Portrush
'Back then we couldn't handle those situations,' he said.
Now they're feeding off them.
Adding to the many cool sights at Royal Portrush's historic links this week was the British Open leaderboard on Friday showing 24-year-old Danish twins pretty much next to each other.
Rasmus tied for fifth. Nicolai tied for 10th, a stroke back.
And they both have designs on lifting the claret jug.
'Hopefully we'll have a good weekend,' Nicolai said, 'and maybe battle it out on Sunday.'
The Hojgaard brothers — who, in 2023, became the first twins to play at golf's oldest championship — have been pretty much inseparable since they turned pro in 2019, having first hit a golf ball at the age of 4.
They were soon champions on the European tour, even winning on consecutive weeks in August-September 2021 — another first on the tour for a pair of brothers.
Since last year, they have both had cards to play on the PGA Tour.
In fact, don't put it past them to be teaming up at the Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black in September.
'We couldn't handle each other's success when we were younger,' Nicolai said, 'but we can do that now and support each other and get motivated by each other. When you get older, you get slightly more mature.'
The big question now is who will be the first to win a major title?
And will it happen this week?
'I'm going to root for him,' Rasmus said, 'until we are on Sunday, back nine.'
Rasmus has a one-shot advantage over his brother and also the positive experience of a big links victory in Ireland last year, when he birdied his last three holes to win the Irish Open at the expense of Rory McIlroy at Royal County Down.
Nicolai has a better Open record, though, making the cut three times and having a best finish of tied for 23rd at Hoylake in 2023.
Rasmus has got to the weekend once, tying for 60th at Royal Troon last year.
Keegan and the Ryder Cup
U.S. Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley already was in the conversation to be the first playing captain since 1963 when he won the Travelers Championship last month. And then he shot 67 to stay in the mix at the British Open.
Points are worth one-and-a-half in the majors (one point equals $1,000). Bradley is No. 9 in the U.S. standings with the top six qualifying, and then he has six captain's picks. One of them could be him.
'I'm going to look at myself as just another player,' Bradley said. 'We have to look at every single possibility, just like we'd look at any other player in my position. Anybody in the top 12 or top 15 or top 20, you want to look at the player that's playing the best.'
The PGA Tour has two regular tournaments left and then two $20 million playoff events before the end of qualifying. The picks are made after the Tour Championship ends on Aug. 24.
'If I continue my play, then we'll talk about this,' Bradley said. 'But you never know how this golf thing is.'
No more amateurs
There will be no silver medal handed out on the 18th green at Royal Portrush on Sunday.
Nine amateurs started out on Thursday and all are headed home. That hasn't happened at a completed Open Championship since 2019.
To win the silver medal for low amateur, a player must complete 72 holes.
The best-placed amateur in the 156-player field was Ethan Fang, an American who shot 75-70 to finish on 3-over par.
Extended stay
Chris Gotterup might have thought he'd be in the British Isles for only a week when he came over for the Scottish Open, the warmup event for the Open Championship.
The American wound up outlasting Rory McIlroy to win in North Berwick on Sunday for his second PGA Tour title, securing a spot in the field at Royal Portrush in the process.
Gotterup is sticking around for the weekend there, too, with a second-round 65 lifting him to fifth place.
He was flying solo in Scotland last week and his parents have since come over to watch his British Open debut. His girlfriend was thinking of coming over but it didn't work out.
'I feel like if I had a ton of people here, it's always fun, but it just drains you a little bit with entertaining,' he said.
Gotterup wasn't allowing himself to think of winning again.
'I felt like I was playing with house money coming into the weekend, or into the week in general,' he said. 'I'm happy to be where I'm at."
The imperfect 10
Shaun Norris of South Africa played some reasonable golf on Friday. He had four birdies against only two bogeys. He made 11 pars.
Unfortunately for Norris, that only adds up to 17 holes.
The other hole was a 10 on the par-4 fourth hole.
'One hole killed me today, so it was a fight there on in,' Norris said after a hard-earned 75.
Here's the quick summary: A drive out-of-bounds. A third shot into a fairway bunker. Four shots to get out of the pot bunker. An approach that missed the green. A chip. And a 7-foot putt to save sextuple-bogey 10.
'I hit a very poor tee shot, the first one,' he said. 'Then proceeded to hit the next one straight in the bunker. Now I'm trying to chase something, trying to make the best score out of it. Unfortunately, the fourth shot caught the lip, then stuck with the same club and tried to do the same.
'After that, the mind sort of went a little bit numb. But it happens. Golf is golf. There's nothing you can do about it. Made a number, and I had to accept it and carry on.'

Here comes Rory
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler took The 2025 Open Championship by storm on Friday at Royal Portrush, with a stunning round of 64 Getty Images The second round of the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush saw world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler grab the lead with Matt Fitzpatrick one shot back. Scheffler finished Friday at 10-under after he added a brilliant round of 64 to his opening 68, while Fitzpatrick has now shot scores of 67 and 66. Former champion Brian Harman and Haotong Li are two shots back, with Harman going round in 65 today, while Li shot a 67. Local favorite Rory McIlroy (-3) is still in the mix after shooting a 2-under 69, with 33 players under par heading into the weekend. Share your views: live@ GO FURTHER Open Championship 2025 Round 2: What to know as Scottie Scheffler takes the lead Getty Images McIlroy -3, Fleetwood -2, Thomas E (14) That was a scintillating birdie from Rory McIlroy. After his 380-yard tee shot landed in the fairway, the current Masters champion placed his 87-yard approach 17 feet from the pin on the green. The result? A no-doubter birdie in the middle of the cup. McIlroy improves to 3-under for the tournament, four off the lead. The same can't be said for Justin Thomas, who gave back his birdie on 13 with a bogey after missing a 7-footer for par. Tommy Fleetwood settled for par after making a 3-foot putt. Getty Images Harman -7, McNealy +1, Niemann +1 (17) Pars all around for this trio on 17. Brian Harman left his birdie putt well short, still requiring 4 feet to par the hole which he converts to hold on to a one-shot lead. But, that was a golden opportunity for more breathing room. Getty Images Li -6, J. Smith E, Johnson +2 (5) Haotong Li is 2-under for the day and up to 6-under for the tournament, one shot off the lead. He is continuing the momentum he had from yesterday's strong round and has two birdies in his first five holes. Getty Images Harman -7, McNealy +1, Niemann +1 (16) After a straightforward par on 16, Brian Harman has a chance to extend his lead here on 17. His tee shot is right down the middle, setting up a promising look at the pin if he executes this next shot well. Harman does exactly that. Yes, his approach shot skipped a bit past the cup, but he's still looking at 14 feet for birdie and a three-shot lead. Getty Images Hatton -5, Henley -1, Lee +2 (16) Tyrrell Hatton settles for par on the 16th after just missing the birdie putt, and that brought the classic Hatton reaction. He stays at 5-under for the tournament and 2-under for his round. Russell Henley pars, as well, and is at 1-under for the tournament (2-under for the round). Min Woo Lee will likely miss the cut. He's a 5-over. Getty Images No pressure with that sign, eh, Rory? Getty Images McIlroy -2, Fleetwood -2, Thomas -1 (13) The par-3 13th is one of the signature holes at Royal Portrush. A downhill par-3 that's only 200 yards. For Rory McIlroy, he didn't do any damage. He landed his tee shot 19 feet from the pin but couldn't make the birdie putt, settling for par. Tommy Fleetwood will be kicking himself for not getting another birdie. His tee shot was sublime, 201 yards to 9 feet from the pin. But the Englishman couldn't bury the birdie putt. The only one of the trio to birdie was Justin Thomas, sinking the 7-footer to get to red figures. To the 14th, this featured group goes. Getty Images Gotterup -1, Westwood -2, Detry +1 (2) American Chris Gotterup with the moment of his tournament so far! The 25-year-old out of Easton, Md., pars the first, then on the par-five second, whacks it up to 22 feet with his first two shots. He judges the green perfectly, right to left and a bit of a downward slope, and in for an eagle! Gotterup is now into the red. Getty Images Højgaard -5 (68), Bezuidenhout -2 (73), Langasque E (71) What a beautiful way to round off a generally excellent round from Rasmus Højgaard, who repairs a chunk of the damage from those back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15, with a lovely birdie on the 18th. It's a gorgeous putt from 33 feet, too, over the ridge and curling round to the left before wiping its feet as it dropped. A satisfying moment that should help Højgaard carry some momentum into the rest of this weekend — because he can be a genuine contender here, for sure. A bogey at 16 means Christiaan Bezuidenhout is a little further adrift heading into tomorrow than he would have hoped for, while a double-bogey at the last summed up Romain Langasque's day. He finishes up even for the day and the week. As you were, Romain. Getty Images McIlroy -2, Thomas E, Fleetwood -2 (12) Finally some movement for Rory McIlroy, after a long run of holes without a birdie. He almost sinks the eagle putt, too, but it misses to the left. He grimaces and lowers his head, but it's a very good effort and a tap-in birdie, and you can't be too unhappy with those. It's a missed opportunity for Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Thomas, however. Both missed the green with their approaches and two-putted for par. Getty Images Harman -7, McNealy +1, Niemann +1 (15) Another solid hole for Brian Harman. After finding the fairway off the tee with his 297-yard drive, the American missed the green short with his 96-yard approach. No worries for Harman, who elected to putt off the green, a common decision in links golf. His birdie putt landed a foot from the pin, resulting in a par. The same can't be said for Harman's playing partners Maverick McNealy and Joaquin Niemann. McNealy landed his 305-yard tee shot in the rough, eventually missing his 12-foot par putt and dropping a shot. Niemann, after landing in the rough off the tee, put his 140-yard approach in the greenside bunker. For the Chilean, he fired his 31-yard bunker shot over the green, before getting it up and down for bogey. Harman goes to the 16th as the solo leader, looking to finish his round strong. Getty Images McIlroy -1, Thomas E, Fleetwood -2 (11) Golf is a lot easier when you can avoid playing your second shot from thick rough. Rory McIlroy hits another good shot with his driver and then is able to stick one in the middle of the green with his long approach. He has a 33-foot putt and a realistic look at eagle. Justin Thomas laid up and will need to wedge on, but Tommy Fleetwood's approach disappeared into the rough that borders the green. Getty Images This is an outstanding round from Robert MacIntyre. He birdied 13 and is striking the ball beautifully. What is it about the lefties that makes it look so easy on the eye? The Scot would be a very popular winner at Portrush. Getty Images Bradley -3 (67), Im E (71), Berger E (70) Keegan Bradley has a little skip and a jump as he wills his birdie putt home on 18. It's on the right line but doesn't have the legs. And with that, Bradley wraps up a 4-under-par 67 — the best second round of the day so far — and is nicely placed ahead of the weekend. Meanwhile, Sungjae Im must have arrived at 18 and been distracted by how neat it would look if he remained level-par after his first two rounds. He bogeys the last, after a birdie at five and with the rest being pars in what may prove the most consistent round today. He should make the cut with a fair wind from here. Getty Images MacIntyre -5, Rose -1, DeChambeau +3 (13) Yep, all three players in the group find the hole for birdie. Getty Images 'Oh, you dirty dog,' exhales Brian Harman, after his shot trickles down the slope of the green on 15. Getty Images There's still an awful lot of golf to be played today. But DataGolf's model says there is a 70 percent chance that +2 will be the cut line. Getty Images MacIntyre -4, DeChambeau +4, Rose E (12) On the 200-yard par-three 13th, Bob MacIntyre knocks it to within 4 feet. Lovely touch. He will have a serious look at birdie, which would take him two shots off the lead. Playing partner Justin Rose rolls it with the precision of a bowls player around toward the flag, with DeChambeau 8 feet away. Could be birdies all round!

Another fairway for Harman
Share your views: live@ GO FURTHER Open Championship 2025 Round 2: What to know as Scottie Scheffler takes the lead Getty Images Harman -7, McNealy E, Niemann E (14) Brian Harman is feeling it with the driver. He's definitely not the longest hitter in the field, but the American is finding the fairway. That's a critical ingredient for success at Royal Portrush. Harman fires a 297-yard tee shot on the par-4 15th landing in the middle of the fairway. He has 106 yards to the pin. Can he add another birdie to his scorecard? Getty Images Harman -7, McNealy E, Niemann E (14) A solid par-4 14th for the solo leader at Brian Harman. Land the ball in the fairway after a 295-yard tee shot? Check. Put the approach shot 28 feet from the pin on the green? Check. The only thing the American didn't do was sink his birdie putt, which moved to the left of the cup. Harman settled for par, along with Maverick McNealy and Joaquin Niemann. The 2023 Open champion heads to the 15th hole with a one-shot lead. Getty Images E, Li -5, +2 (2) The group containing Haotong Li is now out on the course, and Li has made a good start. He had a look at a tricky birdie chance on the first before settling for his par. Then on the second, it's a similar opportunity for eagle — and this miss is more than enough to set up a quick birdie, moving Li to 5-under. He remains the only player out there without a bogey this week. Steady starts with his playing partners, Jordan Smith and Dustin Johnson. Plenty of disappointing days. English amateur Sebastian Cave made four successive bogeys 11 through 14 but finished with three pars and a birdie in his 77, +11 overall. Scotsman Connor Graham is a shot ahead. He had two birdies and a bogey after eight holes but imploded on the back nine, five bogeys giving him a 79 today. The beautiful swing of Adam Scott wasn't enough to save the Australian, at +9 after a frustrating 79 that saw him tumble more than 100 places down the leaderboard. Bryson DeChambeau and Louis Oosthuizen are 2-under for today but are still at +5 and +4, respectively, and all of the above will do very well to avoid the cut. Any other movers and shakers? Viktor Hovland, Thriston Lawrence, Matt Wallace and Cameron Adam are 2-under today, even overall, with Ludvig Åberg and Englishman Harry Hall 3-under today, -1. They should all make the cut, but will need a few more birdies to really challenge the leaders. Getty Images McIlroy -1, Thomas E, Fleetwood -2 (10) Rory McIlroy ranks 15th in driving distance in this tournament. He ranks 155th for driving accuracy. He could certainly use a straight shot on the par-5 11th, which is actually a par-4 for members and played as the hardest hole on the course back in 2019. The driver is back out of the bag … and it's not bad. McIlroy misses the fairway but is in the semi-rough 300 yards down there. MacIntyre -3, DeChambeau +5, Rose E (11) Utter carnage at the 11th for Justin Rose. He leaks wide right off the tee, finds a bush that none of us would want in our gardens, and we have the rare event of an actual lost ball — or at least lots of people spending several minutes trying to find it. He has to reload from the tee, also pulls his fourth shot right into the native and from there it's just a lot of medicine; finishing with a triple-bogey 7 and returning to even for the championship. And to think, Rose had only bogeyed one hole all week before that. Bryson DeChambeau's hopes of making the cut also take a punch with a bogey 5, but at least Bobby MacIntyre survived to preserve his clean round of 3-under so far today. Getty Images Harman -7, McNealy E, Niemann E (13) It's the Brian Harman show at Royal Portrush. The American, who won the 2023 Open at Hoylake, just knocked in a 15-footer for birdie at the 13th to move to 7 under. It is Harman's fifth birdie of the day. Maverick McNealy went the opposite direction on No. 13, bogeying after missing a 4-foot putt for par. Chilean Joaquin Niemann also dropped a shot on the par-3 13th after his 213-yard tee shot landed over the green and he missed the 11-foot par putt. Getty Images McIlroy -1, Thomas E, Fleetwood -2 (10) The green on Himalayas, the 10th hole, is long and narrow and a very difficult one to attack. Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood were all in a good spot following their tee shots, but all struggled with their approaches. Fleetwood's landed at the front of the green to leave a monster putt whilst McIlroy's screwed off the slope that runs away from the pin, which threw it way over the left. Again, it's going to be a big and fairly unrealistic putt for birdie. Thomas missed the green altogether, ending up in the rough off the back. McIlroy actually does very well with his putt, reading it perfectly and almost sinking it for the most unlikely of birdies. But it stops a couple of revolutions short. All three settle for par. Højgaard -4, Bezuidenhout -3, Langasque -2 (15) Further damage for Rasmus Højgaard on the 15th, who goes back-to-back with bogeys after three-putting. That will puncture the mood. He's still a couple up on the day, but momentum has just poked him on the shoulder and given him a scare. Indeed, playing partner Romain Langasque is now just two shots behind him — the Frenchman birdied the 15th to make it 4 shots picked up in his back nine alone, and with three more holes to play. Getty Images McIlroy -1, Thomas E, Fleetwood -2 (9) Well, this is a rarity: All three of this group find the fairway with their tee shot. (Tommy Fleetwood's might actually have run through and ended up about an inch or two into the first cut, but I'm just gonna go ahead and ignore that.) Rory McIlroy once again elected to leave the big stick in the bag. I wonder if we'll see it again today. Getty Images McIlroy -1, Thomas E, Fleetwood -2 (9) That was a serious bit of luck for Rory McIlroy. His tee shot was left of left only to come to rest in a patch of grass that had been stamped down by spectators. From there he did well to hoist one to the back of the green and, one good lag putt later, he was able to roll home a tiddler to escape with par. Tommy Fleetwood missed the green with his second shot but got up and down to make par. Justin Thomas missed his birdie putt and ended up with the same score. They head to the back nine and Fleetwood, who was the furthest back in this group at the start of the day, now leads the way. Getty Images Bradley -3, Im -1, Berger E (15) Keegan Bradley has another one, this time with a birdie at 15 — taking him to 3-under and he is going as well today as anyone. He's sneaking up on the leaders right now, the little in-from sneak. A note for Sungjae Im too, who is 1-under for his day, 1-under for his championship and in the midst of 14 pars from his 15 holes today. Mr Consistent. Getty Images Højgaard -5, Bezuidenhout -3, Langasque -1 (14) The 14th continues to play as the hardest hole around Royal Portrush — at yet it feels like a rather unnecessary bogey-5 for Rasmus Højgaard, simply from getting sucked right on his approach and then not gobbling up enough yardage on his chip. He misses his par putt from six feet and that's enough to drop him back down to 5-under, leaving Brian Harman in the sole lead. A real shame after his successive birdies. McIlroy -1, Thomas E, Fleetwood -2 (8) Rory McIlroy reaches for the fairway wood after watching Justin Thomas and Tommy Fleetwood hit good shots on the ninth. Thomas is down the left of the fairway and Fleetwood is in the first cut down the right. But, despite clubbing down, McIlroy just cannot stop hitting it left off the tee. And I mean really left, with his ball clearing the first strip of juicy rough and landing in a trampled down area that fans have been standing on. He may have caught a break there. Another few feet and his ball would have flown straight into a shrub and that would have been another penalty drop. Getty Images English -5, +5, Finau -2 (7) Harris English is excelling on the par-5s so far this week and he does it again at the seventh, getting back to 5-under within a shot of the leading duo — although it was previously enough for the outright lead when English reached the dizzy heights after No. 2. Getty Images With a third birdie on his front nine, Bryson DeChambeau has gone out in 33 and reached 4-over. The most likely cut line is at 2-over, so he must continue to push — but after a miserable Thursday, the two-time U.S. Open champ at least has a chance. Getty Images McIlroy -1, Thomas E, Fleetwood -2 (8) Ryder Cup buddies Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood are both safely aboard the dance floor with their second shots. And the former in particular has a really good look at birdie. Justin Thomas has to lay up. But he then sticks his wedge from the front of the green to within 4ft and he'll hope to save par. Fleetwood up first … He races it 4ft past. McIlroy then misreads slightly, with his ball quickly moving from left to right and leaving a tap in for par. Thomas and Fleetwood tidy up and we move on to the ninth, Tavern. MacIntyre -3, DeChambeau +4, Rose -3 (9) Good news from the ninth, as Justin Rose finally gets back to 3-under with a neat birdie. Credit to Bryson DeChambeau too, who also claws a shot back here. That's now 3-under for his front nine today and among the best second rounds so far. At 4-over and with a favorable run, he could yet make the cut. Getty Images Harman -6, McNealy -1, Niemann E (10) The shots are getting chipped away now at the top. Brian Harman swiftly joins Rasmus Højgaard at 6-under after a birdie at No. 10, with Tyrrell Hatton now alone in third on -5 behind the pair. Harman up to 4-under for his second round. Marc Leishman's 68 remains the pick of today's 18.
