Ja Morant's grit fuels CJ Cansino's comeback mindset
CJ Cansino and Ja Morant both saw their careers sidetracked by injuries, and now, the former hopes to mirror the latter's hard work and consistency as he pushes forward in his own professional journey in the PBA.
"Siguro 'yung hard work niya and consistency niya kasi makikita naman natin sa NBA na na-injure siya and then bumalik so marami siyang pinagdaanan pero andito pa rin siya," Cansino said during Morant's one-day Manila visit last Friday.
"Tumutulong [siya] na maging inspiration sa mga bata, pumupunta kung saan-saan para mapakita niya na pwede, posible."
Cansino had his fair share of injuries in the past, sustaining a knee injury during his rookie year with the University of Santo Tomas in Season in 2018.
Cansino then transferred to University of the Philippines and played crucial role in the Fighting Maroons' historic Season 84 title run. He, however, missed the entire Season 85 after undergoing a right knee injury.
In the pro scene, the 25-year-old wingman had also been sidelined for more than two months due to an ankle injury he sustained during Meralco's Governors' Cup quarterfinal clash against Ginebra last September.
Cansino, who was among those select players who got the chance to play in an exhibition game in front of Morant at The Courtyard BGC, said he is hoping to emulate Morant's resilience.
Morant once battled through injuries himself, sustaining a season-ending shoulder injury in January 2024 that also reduced him to a spectator for the Memphis Grizzlies.
"Oo naman kasi syempre 'pag player ka, may titignan ka talaga na NBA player kasi alam mo 'yung pinagdaanan nila," Cansino said.
"Isa si Ja Morant doon and sobrang happy ko na nandito sa Manila."
Armed with both his personal journey and the inspiration drawn from Morant, Cansino hopes to take a significant step forward as he enters his sophomore year with the Bolts.
"Ang masasabi ko sa rookie year ko ay marami akong natutunan and alam ko na 'yung mga gagawin ko at alam ko na 'yung mga i-i-improve ko so sa second year, siguro more on application na lang."

Meralco Bolts to represent PBA anew in expanded EASL

(Photo: PBA Media) The Meralco Bolts have been named the sole representative of the PBA in the 2025-2026 East Asia Super League (EASL), marking the third straight time the franchise will suit up in the regional club tournament. Meralco made its EASL debut in 2023 alongside another PBA bet in TNT. That edition saw the Bolts rack up one win against five losses to bow out of the Final Four run. The club returned last year and collected two wins against the Macau Black Bears and Busan KCC Egis, but suffered three straight defeats, including a heartbreaking double overtime loss to the New Taipei Kings, in the next games to end its campaign. With Meralco's participation now sealed, the EASL 12-team cast has been completed. The Bolts are drawn in Group B together with the Black Bear as well as last edition's Final Four teams in Taoyuan Pauian Pilots and Ryukyu Golden Kings as EASL now features 12 teams from 10 last edition. Group A consists of Hong Kong Eastern, Seoul SK Knights, Taipei Fubon Braves, and Utsonomiya Brex while Group C has Alvark Tokyo, Changwon LG Sakers, New Taipei Kings, and Ulaanbaatar Xac Broncos. Jack Animam draws inspiration from Ja Morant

As she continues that mission, she also draws strength from a mantra by NBA star Ja Morant that resonates deeply: 'Nobody said it's gonna be easy.' Morant made his first visit to the Philippines last Friday as part of his 'Make Them Watch' tour, giving players like Jack Animam a rare opportunity to showcase their game in front of the Memphis guard. "The lesson is that nobody said it's gonna be easy but you have to continue working and keep going and keep the faith," Animam told the media after the exhibition game. "...because darating 'yung one day mo na you're gonna be in the spotlight. All the lights are gonna be on you and that just shows Ja Morant's journey." For Animam, Morant's journey is one that extends beyond personal inspiration, saying it echoes the aspirations of many in the basketball community, including those of the Gilas Pilipinas Women. The youth-laden Filipinas are coming off a gallant stand at the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup. Gilas kept its Division A status after pulling off a narrow 73-70 win against Lebanon with Animam joining forces with young guns Naomi Panganiban, Sumayah Sugapong, Kacey Dela Rosa, and Kent Pastrana. "Hindi medyo, bata talaga. But I think that just shows how resilient we are, us athletes, especially Filipina athletes," Animam added. "Kahit na kung sinuman ang nasa harap, walang aatrasan 'yan. Laban talaga 'yan and I think that's what we showed." Animam also hopes to see more international basketball stars engage with the local scene, especially with the Philippines being one of the most passionate basketball nations in the world. "Personally, makita 'yung ganitong karaming babae to join in this event, sobrnag happy. We're a basketball-crazy country so dapat lang 'yung mga basketball stars dito pumunta," Animam said.
