Former West Bengal BJP President Dilip Ghosh says party did not invite him to PM rally, gives it a miss

Dilip Ghosh, former president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal, remained absent from Prime Minister Narendra Modi's event in the State on Friday, claiming the party 'did not invite' him.
'The party cadre had called me to attend the rally. But the party did not invite me. Maybe they do not want me there; it would make them uncomfortable. So, I will not go to the Prime Minister's rally. I am going to Delhi instead, for some work related to the party,' Mr Ghosh told media persons at the Kolkata airport before departing for Delhi.
In Delhi, he was seen going to the residence of national BJP president JP Nadda, and leaving in a few minutes. Meanwhile, on the same day, in West Bengal's Durgapur, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated key development projects and attended a party rally.
Mr. Ghosh has notably remained absent from important party events and rallies in the recent past, including events attended by Prime Minister Modi at Alipurduar and Home Minister Amit Shah in Kolkata this year.
His absence on Friday assumes significance considering the upcoming Martyrs' Day rally by the Trinamool on July 21. Speculations are rife that Mr Ghosh is potentially joining Trinamool.
Amid reports of a souring relationship between Mr. Ghosh and the State BJP leadership, the newly appointed West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya had reached out to Mr Ghosh on July 8 this year.
After their in-person meeting, Mr. Bhattacharya described Mr. Ghosh as the 'heart and soul' of the party, while Mr. Ghosh said that he will follow instructions from the party leadership like any other party worker.
Mr. Ghosh is a senior leader of the BJP in the State and has served as a national vice president and State president of the BJP. Under his leadership, the BJP had won 18 out of the State's 42 Lok Sabha seats in 2019.
He was earlier elected as an MP from Medinipur in 2019 and an MLA from Kharagpur Sadar in 2016.
In May this year, Mr. Ghosh drew criticism from the BJP when he met West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the inauguration of the Digha Jagannath Temple. The erstwhile State BJP President, Sukanta Majumder, was quick to clarify to the media that the party had decided not to attend the temple inauguration, and Mr, Ghosh's presence was in his personal capacity.

BJP slams Rahul Gandhi for defending Vadra, Priyanka over Baghel's son's arrest

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday hit back at Congress MP Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) charge sheet against Robert Vadra, accusing Gandhi of misusing his constitutional post to defend family interests. The BJP also criticised Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for defending former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel's son, Chaitanya Baghel, over his arrest in a liquor policy-linked money laundering case. BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi. (File Photo) 'The first family of the corruption-ridden Congress always bands together to cover up each other's misconduct. Brother in Lok Sabha, mother in Rajya Sabha, sister in Lok Sabha and all the land holdings with brother-in-law Robert means, whether they have the political holdings or not, they ensured land ownership by grabbing farmers' land. For this, they divide the country along linguistic, regional and caste lines,' BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said during a media briefing in Delhi. Trivedi questioned Rahul Gandhi's response, asking whether Gandhi made his statement as an individual or as a person holding a constitutional post. 'What Rahul Gandhi had posted, did he do it as an individual or as a leader of Opposition, or did he misuse the constitutional post to defend family interests?' Congress is yet to respond to the BJP's remarks. On Friday, Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP-led government of pursuing a 'politically motivated witch hunt' against Vadra after ED filed its first charge sheet in the Gurugram land deal case. Gandhi said his family would face the persecution with dignity and that 'the truth will prevail.' The ED's charge sheet pertains to a 3.53-acre land deal in Shikohpur, Gurugram, allegedly bought in 2008 using dubious financial arrangements. The federal agency attached 43 properties worth ₹37.64 crore belonging to Vadra and his companies. Vadra had been questioned three times by ED in April 2025. His office dismissed the charge sheet as 'an extension of the political witch hunt,' adding that Vadra would contest the case in court. Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi condemned the arrest of Chaitanya Baghel, alleging it was an attempt to silence former CM Bhupesh Baghel on key environmental issues in the state assembly. 'The BJP government handed over Chhattisgarh's forests to Adani ji, violating the PESA Act and NGT orders. Bhupesh Baghel ji was going to raise this in the assembly, so they arrested his son early in the morning,' Priyanka posted on X. Chaitanya Baghel was arrested by ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) following early morning raids at his residence in Bhilai, Durg district. He was remanded in ED custody till July 22 by a special PMLA court. According to the ED's remand application, Chaitanya allegedly received ₹16.70 crore in proceeds of crime through two linked firms, including ₹5 crore via M/s Saheli Jewellers. ED noted ₹4.5 crore remains unpaid and interest-free, terming the transactions a suspected front for laundering illicit cash.

Rahul using his constitutional position to protect family crimes: BJP

The BJP on Saturday (July 19, 2025) accused Rahul Gandhi of misusing his constitutional position as the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha to "protect" his family's crimes. The party made the allegations as part of its continued targeting of the Congress leader's defence of his brother-in-law, Robert Vadra, who has been charged by the ED with money laundering. Speaking to reporters, BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi claimed that the Opposition INDIA bloc is beset with internal conflict and faces disintegration ahead of Parliament's Monsoon Session beginning Monday. Citing a Hindi song, Mr. Trivedi took a swipe at the Opposition alliance, wondering how worse its future is going to be when its present is in such dire straits. The Aam Aadmi Party has already announced that it is no longer in the alliance, while the CPI(M) took a "naive" dig at Mr. Gandhi following his attack on the Kerala government. Noting that Mr. Gandhi addressed Mr. Vadra as his "brother-in-law" in an X post, accusing the government of a "witch hunt" against him, the BJP MP said it is clearly a family, and not a political issue, for the Congress leader. Mr. Gandhi has come out to protect Mr. Vadra's properties collected through corruption, he alleged, noting that the Congress leader is himself on bail in a corruption case. Mr. Trivedi wondered if Mr. Gandhi posted the message in his personal capacity or as the Leader of Opposition, and said, "He has misused his constitutional position to protect his family crimes." He accused the Congress's "first family" of seeking power and money even if it means dividing society in the name of region or language. "Why should the Congress's first family, which is neck-deep in corruption, level political allegations in a family matter?" Mr. Trivedi asked. With Priyanka Gandhi targeting the ruling BJP in the wake of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arresting the son of former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel in a corruption case, the BJP leader claimed that Gandhi family members are protecting the corrupt. Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused the government of launching a witch-hunt against Vadra after the ED filed a charge sheet against the businessman in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a land deal in Haryana's Shikohpur. Mr. Gandhi asserted that the truth shall eventually prevail and that his sister Priyanka and her family will withstand any kind of "persecution." Mr. Trivedi also scorned Gandhi for his barb at the Narendra Modi government over its dealings with China. "It is regretful that the one who travels abroad the most has no understanding of foreign policy," he said, adding that he needs to get the "circuit" of his mind checked for making a "circus" barb at the government's policy. Tagging a media report on External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar calling on Chinese President Xi Jinping and apprising him of the recent development in India-China ties, Gandhi had on Tuesday said he was "running a full-blown circus aimed at destroying India's foreign policy."

INDIA Bloc To Hold First Meet Since 2024 Polls Today: Who'll Attend, Who'll Skip After AAP's Exit?

AAP announced its exit from Opposition's INDIA bloc. The grouping is set to hold its first meeting since the 2024 Lok Sabha polls today. Ahead of the Monsoon Session of the Parliament, the Opposition parties of the INDIA bloc will hold an online meeting on Saturday evening to strategise on the issues to be raised during the session that begins on Monday. The meeting of the INDIA bloc will take place after a long gap and will be the first since last year's Lok Sabha Elections in which the Opposition put up a decent fight but failed to dislodge the BJP-led NDA from power at the Centre. The meeting comes on the heels of the Aam Aadmi Party's announcement of its exit from the bloc that was formed ahead of the general elections to take on the Narendra Modi government. The grouping has since then been in tatters, as the allies were nowhere to be seen fighting as partners in the Assembly polls that followed the national elections – Haryana and Delhi being the prime examples. Who Will Attend Today's INDIA Bloc Meet? The AAP has announced its exit from the bloc and is unlikely to register its presence in the online meet. The party said that the INDIA bloc 'failed to stay united and take steps to further its agenda". West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's TMC, which earlier said that it would skip the meeting, has now affirmed its participation through Abhishek Banerjee. No other ally of the group has announced their unavailability to attend the meeting that is set to take place at 7 pm. 'A meeting of the leaders of the INDIA parties will be held online on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 7 pm to discuss the prevailing political situation in the country," Congress general secretary KC Venugopal tweeted on Thursday. The Opposition is expected to raise issues such as the electoral roll revision in Bihar, the Pahalgam terror attack, and Operation Sindoor. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh reacted to the AAP's announcement to quit the bloc and said that all parties of the alliance have been invited. 'I cannot say anything about that. All parties of the India Alliance have been invited. Those who want will come and those who stay separated will not come," he told news agency ANI. He reaffirmed the unity of the grouping and said that the prominent leaders of respective parties will meet online on Saturday and later hold an in-person meeting in the national capital. 'People would not be able to come to Delhi on Saturday due to different programmes. It has been decided that we will have an online meeting before the Parliament session. After that, we will meet in Delhi also," news agency PTI quoted Jairam as saying. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
