The winner takes it all but Leah Williamson won't ‘banish Abba' for Sweden clash

The Swedish band's 'Does Your Mother Know' became a key track on the Williamson-curated dressing room playlist during England's triumphant Euro 2022 campaign, where they beat Sweden 4-0 in the last four – a defeat made 'easier to bear' by the use of the song, according to Abba's own Bjorn Ulvaeus.
It was a closer affair when they met in the qualifiers for this tournament, drawing twice, including the goalless July 2024 stalemate that was enough for England to book a direct place in the finals.

Hearing some Swedish fans had claimed Abba were better than the Beatles, and therefore Sweden would beat England, Williamson replied: 'I don't (agree with that) I'm afraid. One might be easier to dance to, but no.
'I don't think that will be on the playlist, but it worked in 2022 so I don't want to banish Abba completely.'
The England centre-back is gearing up for a battle with Arsenal team-mate Stina Blackstenius.
In May, the Swedish forward struck in the winning goal in Lisbon, where the Gunners lifted the Champions League trophy with a 1-0 victory over heavy favourites Barcelona.
Blackstenius has already contributed two goals at these Euros for Group C winners Sweden, but is just one of the threats on what Williamson feels is a 'very organised team' that 'work for each other' and 'deserve a bit more recognition'.
'Stina is an incredibly powerful footballer,' said Williamson. 'I think she's very intelligent with her runs, she's a hard player to play against in that respect. I was celebrating her success at Arsenal, and not so much now.
'So we'll see, but she's a great player and she has been for many years now, so her experience speaks for itself.'
Despite their familiarity, an international tournament is a rare chance for the club-mates to properly battle it out.
'It's different,' explained Williamson. 'Obviously playing against each other in training (it's) maybe in a drill with restrictions, but it's very rare that I'll play against her in this setting.
'So I enjoy it. I like Stina, so it's tough to just remove all that to then just go at it, and you don't want to focus too much (on it).
'There's loads of different things that come into play when you play against a team-mate, but I think I've know Stina long enough now that it's kind of fun.
'I know who she is, and it's time for us to focus on us.'
Williamson captained England to the trophy at Wembley in 2022 but missed the World Cup after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament injury in April 2023, just months before the tournament.
She added: 'I was part of that squad, and I will forever be proud to have been part of that squad, but we don't want it to be the only one.
'It's a constant driver. You want to do more. You always want to do more, and I'd like to say that on that day I felt as happy as I ever felt, and that probably would have been enough for me, but the next day it creeps around and everybody wants more all the time.'

Sir Alex Ferguson provides ‘incredible' support to Rangers boss Russell Martin

Ferguson joined former Ibrox team-mate and ex-manager John Greig in meeting the Rangers players during the week to back up Martin's attempts to instil a winning mentality. Speaking ahead of his competitive debut in the Champions League qualifiers against Panathinaikos at Ibrox on Tuesday, Martin told Rangers TV: 'We have to get into the habit of winning. We have to get in the habit of playing the way that we want to play, regardless of who we play against. 'I said that to the team from day one. It has to be about us and it has to be about our intention and our habits and what we do. If we're going to do something, we're going to do it all the time. 'If we're going to run, it's not a choice. We're going to run all the time. If we're going to fight, we're going to fight all the time. There's never a choice at this football club. You have to do it. 'We've had a couple of people in this week, in John Greig and Sir Alex Ferguson, who understand that. 'It's been brilliant for the guys to see them. They're desperate for this team to do well and for us to do well as a group. They've echoed that message. 'That's what they want to see as fans of this club. Any team talk or any message I have for the players I think is done when those two guys speak about this club and what it means to them and what they expect from the performance. 'I hope we can put in a performance that those two feel proud of as well.' The former Aberdeen and Manchester United had earlier contacted Martin through his son's connection with the Gers boss. Martin said: 'I played under Darren Ferguson at Peterborough and he reached out a few weeks ago when I got the job and said his dad wanted to give me a call and was that OK? I said, of course. Since then, Sir Alex has been in touch really regularly. He's been great. 'I said to him, you need to come in as soon as you can. He came up and he's been in. It was brilliant for everyone to see him. 'It's the first time he's ever been here. It was a really good moment for everyone to meet him and see him. He's been so supportive of me personally, which has been incredible. 'Then, Mr Greig, he messaged me and it's just been the first chance he had to get in. They both told stories about each other and it was nice to see them both. They're both really behind us and what we're doing. 'They just want to feel the same way as all the fans. We want to see a team that fights and works for everything and has a way about them on the pitch that typifies and exemplifies what they believe this club to be about.'

England very optimistic Leah Williamson will be fit for semi-final

Williamson rolled her ankle and left Thursday's contest in the first period of extra-time – after goals from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang snatched the Lionesses a late 2-2 draw after 90 minutes – before they booked a last-four spot following a dramatic penalty shootout. Morgan was introduced as part of a 70th-minute triple change and is prepared to play any role for the defending champions in Geneva – including stepping in for the skipper, if necessary. But, she stressed: 'We are very optimistic that Leah will be available. She seemed in very high spirits this morning, and I want what's best for the team and that's absolutely having our captain on the pitch for us. 'The same as every single game, I'm going to be prepared to play if I'm needed. I'll know the role and just be absolutely ready to train at at high level over the next few days, but we're very optimistic Leah will be fine.' England boss Sarina Wiegman revealed after the Sweden victory that Williamson would be assessed on Friday, though no further updates were yet provided on the captain's status ahead of what will be England's sixth-consecutive major tournament semi-final. Williamson was spotted in a boot and using crutches immediately after the match, which was understood to have been a precautionary measure. Morgan said her mother was 'sobbing' when she came on for her first major tournament appearance, tasked with delivering a now-viral note to Bronze and Williamson she swears she did not read, suspecting it simply contained the formation but joking later on her Instagram account that it read 'save us GOAT', in reference to Bronze. Back on the grass and continuing the hard work 👊 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 18, 2025 And that's what the seven-time major tournament veteran ultimately did, when she sent what became England's winning penalty – with their seventh attempt – down the middle, before slamming the ball down in celebration. 'I don't think (how important Bronze is) can be put into words,' said Morgan. 'She's such an incredible leader on this team. We're all inspired by her mentality. 'She's a freak, really. She has so much passion, energy, fire and she infects everyone else with it. That note might as well have said that, because apparently that's what she read on it.' There was, admitted Morgan, a fleeting moment, when England were 2-0 down at the end of the first half, that she entertained the possibility their campaign could be coming to an end. 'I thought, 'I've not packed anything. My wardrobes are full right now. I've not got anything in my suitcases ready',' added Morgan. 'But I really had a sense throughout the game, even when we were down, that it wasn't our time to go. 'I think sometimes you just have a sense of calm, which, I can't explain why it's there, but just a relief, really, that we're not going to let this happen. 'I always had faith that we were going to be able to turn it around and thankfully that happened.'
