Daryl Hall says he will never perform with John Oates ever again

Independent02-03-2025
Daryl Hall is happy to remain out of touch with John Oates – the musician has said he will never mend his differences with his former bandmate.
The Hall & Oates stars have been embroiled in a rivalry ever since November 2023 when Oates attempted to sell his shares of their jointly owned company, Whole Oates Enterprise. Hall, 78, responded by suing Oates for what he called 'the ultimate partnership betrayal' and called time on their music partnership for good.
Now, more than a year on, Hall has revealed whether they would ever reunite and perform together again.
'That ship has gone to the bottom of the ocean,' Hall said in a new interview, telling The Times: 'I've had a lot of surprises in my life, disappointments, betrayals, so I'm kind of used to it.'
Hall also hit out at Oates, 76, when discussing his musical partnership with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart, with whom he worked on his most recent album, D.
He described their partnership as a 'more meaningful' one than he ever had with Oates, stating: 'It's a real collaborative relationship – and it's based on maturity.'
Hall & Oates formed their double act in 1970 and have released 18 studio albums, including their 1972 debut Whole Oats.
Those albums produced a string of hit singles, including 'Maneater', 'Out of Touch', 'I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)','You Make My Dreams' and 'Rich Girl'. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014 and their latest album, Home for Christmas, was released in 2006.
In May 2024, Oates explained why he tried to sell his shares in the joint partnership he'd had with Hall.

'When this whole situation got mired in legality and really complex legal wranglings, I got frustrated,' he told Good Morning America.
'And I said, 'You know what? Daryl has always wanted to be his own man.' I said, 'I'm gonna give him the opportunity to do that. If I sell my half, he can either, you know, he can do what he wants.'
'And it was kinda ruining my life, to be honest with you. I wasn't happy. And I said, 'Well, I'll just step aside.' People do it all the time. I mean, you look at all the artists who are selling all their catalogues, it's pretty common. It's not that big a deal. But Daryl didn't like the idea that I would sell to a certain third party.'
In legal filings, Hall accused Oates and his co-defendants of trying to go forward with the transaction 'completely behind my back and without my written approval'. Hall said the attempted transaction was unauthorised because he had not given Oates his consent, which he said was required.
Hall also noted in the lawsuit that documents show negotiations between Oates and the third party 'began, at latest, on 2 October 2023 when a nondisclosure agreement was signed'. He claimed that he hadn't learnt about the deal until 20 October 2023. He called Oates's move 'completely clandestine' and in 'bad faith'.
When asked if he sees the situation in the same way, Oates said he did not.
'Because we've always looked at ourselves as individuals working together,' he said. 'And I felt like I had the right to do that. But, you know, he didn't.'
Oates added that they hadn't worked together creatively in more than 20 years. 'The only thing we did together was play concerts where we just went out there and trotted out the hits,' he said.
'We never really talked to each other very much,' Oates said. 'Over the past 20 years, we'd show up at a show individually, walk on stage, play, and then we'd go our separate ways… it really wasn't as tight as people might, you know, would like to imagine in their, kind of a fantasy imagination of our relationship.'
When asked if the pair would ever perform together again, Oates responded: 'Not from my point of view, but you need to ask Daryl how he feels about it.'
It seems like he has his answer.

Jeremy Clarkson lashes out at JD Vance's security

Jeremy Clarkson has lashed out at security officers after finding himself caught up in JD Vance's visit to the UK. The so-called 'no-fly zone' was set up around the Cotswolds for the US Vice President's trip to the UK this month. Vance is staying at the 18th Century Dean Manor in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. As the controversial politician and his security team descend upon the small-town English hamlet, local residents have had their lives disrupted by 'the circus' his visit entailed. One such local is Diddly Squat boss Jeremy Clarkson, who found himself entangled in the Hillbilly Elegy author's no-fly zone. With his drone intercepted by members of Vance's security team, the miffed Grand Tour host snapped back in typically Clarkson fashion. Clarkson had been using the drone to film the latest series of his hit show Clarkson's Farm, which uses the gadget to shoot certain scenes. As he explained in The Times, Clarkson was approached by a member of Vance's security team who asked him: 'Is that your drone?' When he responded in the affirmative, the TV presenter-turned-farmer was reportedly told: 'You aren't allowed to fly that today.' Clarkson claims that he then told the officer to 'f***k off,' to which he replied: 'OK.' Clarkson had previously shared a picture of Vance's no-fly zone to his Instagram account. He captioned the map: 'The JD Vance no-fly zone. We are the pin. So on the downside, no drone shots today. On the upside, no annoying light aircraft.' The TV star's pin showed Diddly Squat's location on the outskirts of the red circle. Meanwhile, one unnamed source told The Daily Mail: 'Dean Manor is as close as possible to Mr Clarkson's farm house as can be. I'm willing to bet Clarkson can see it out of his bedroom window.' Detailing the disruption, farm manager Kaleb Cooper commented on Clarkson's post: 'My wheat got wet in the trailer last night as the convo stopped me in the rain in [Chipping Norton]. 'I could have easily went on my way and got it in the shed without getting in the way.' Cooper added: 'He he just drove around in a vw polo nobody would know who he was 😂' In a message shared by The Telegraph, house owners Johnny and Pippa Hornby apologised to locals for the disruption, with Mrs. Hornby describing herself as 'so sorry for the circus that is there for the next few days.' She went on to share her hope that it would not be 'too disruptive.' More Trending The six-acre property was chosen by the US Secret Service team for its remote and secure location. It's unlikely that Vance will be popping by Diddly Squat for a neighbourly visit though, given recent tensions between the pair. In response to comments made by Vance about the UK (describing it, among other things, as 'some random country'), Clarkson wrote: 'I've searched for the right word to describe him and I think it's 't**t'. He also has no clue about history. View More » 'Because far more recently than 30 or 40 years ago, as Vance claimed last week, our brave young men were being blown to pieces in some godforsaken desert to support whatever madcap scheme the American president had embarked upon that week.' National food critic raves about St Davids breakfast spot

The Brunch House in St Davids, located in Oriel y Parc at the top of St Davids' High Street, was recently reviewed by The Times' Giles Coren, who described it as "a sprawling modern space, brightly coloured and breezy." He recommended it as an ideal breakfast stop "especially if you have giant hungry teenagers," and highlighted several dishes, including fried chicken and pancakes with hot maple sauce and the café's signature savoury French toast. This dish, described as a "brick of brioche" topped with beans, cheese, bacon and a fried egg, was likened by Mr Coren to "a bubbling breakfast Vesuvius for maximum Instagram ability." Giles Coren with The Brunch House co-owner Hannah Bowie (Image: Supplied) The Brunch House is owned by Hannah Bowie and Adam Sawyer, who launched the café in November 2024. Ms Bowie said: "We're absolutely thrilled that Giles Coren enjoyed both his visits. "We've worked hard to create a space that's both welcoming and exciting, and we love giving classic breakfast dishes our own twist." Combining Middle Eastern flavours with playful takes on brunch classics, the café has quickly become a favourite among locals and visitors.

TV presenter Laura Jackson admits her crippling antenatal depression left her 'miserable, crying every day and unable to get out of bed'

TV presenter Laura Jackson has opened up about how her debilitating antenatal depression left her 'miserable, crying every day and unable to get out of bed'. The star, 39, was pregnant with her third child Nico in 2022 when her life was turned upside down by mental and physical health problems. Despite already having two children, daughter Sidney Frances and son Remy with her husband Jonathan Gorrigan, she was struck down with crippling symptoms the third time around. At 14 weeks pregnant she was officially diagnosed with antenatal depression and still takes antidepressants to this day. She told The Times of her experience: 'I went from feeling a bit down and tired to constantly exhausted - and so, so miserable. 'I didn't want to get out of bed. I felt as if I'd lost my personality. I cried every single day and I looked dreadful. I look back at pictures of that time now and I'm dead behind the eyes. 'Not to mention that I felt like I should be grateful - that as I was lucky to be pregnant, I was doing something wrong by feeling so awful.' She aded that 'every day was just about getting through it' and that she didn't want to see anyone. There was relief when she gave birth but then she began to struggle again and in October 2024 went to see her GP who prescribed her the antidepressants. Two years on from having her son she finally feels like she has her 'whole self back again'. Back in April 2023 Laura took to Instagram to announce the news of her third child being born and revealed their baby boy's unusual name - Nico Sunny Gorrigan. Sharing a selection of sweet images of Nico with her children, the TV host penned: 'Nico Sunny Gorrigan. Last week we completed our party of 5. 'A different, special and very wonderful kind of Easter. 'A birthing pool entrance, surrounded by our condiments in the kitchen at home - we finally said hello to the latest member of our family. After an emotional and challenging pregnancy - I feel on cloud nine, totally overjoyed that he is finally here! 'It's not often that life takes a real pause, so we are savouring these truly special moments and toasting the new arrival the only way I know how - bottomless marg.' Laura's celeb pals took to the comment section to share their congratulations. At the time she opened up about how hard she had found her pregnancy - which she had kept secret for a long time Helen Skelton wrote: 'Just beautiful', while Laura Whitmore added: 'Congrats you superstar!' Another follower added: 'Heaven!! Congratulations, well done and hi cute tiny Nico'. Laura kept her pregnancy private for as long as possible out of fears it would harm work opportunities, and revealed the news when she was eight months along, and told fans in a post on 21 February. At the time she shared several snaps of her growing bump where she told followers it had been a gruelling pregnancy filled with exhaustion and sickness. She wrote: 'I've always chosen to keep my pregnancies private for as long as possible. Worrying I will get overlooked for work and that it will affect peoples perceptions of my capabilities. 'We have definitely moved the dial a lot in terms of rights, but I think pregnancy shame is a real thing and women are still, sadly, subconsciously (and consciously) discounted from opportunities because of a bump. 'I feel conscious of an announcement trigging others: conceiving can also take a variety of paths - and I always want to try and be as sensitive as possible to friends and my community who are navigating their own fertility choosing not to navigate it at all. 'To be totally frank (and I have wondered how honest to be here) this has been the longest and most emotional 8 months. 'I have not felt myself from about 6 weeks pregnant. I've had exhaustion, zero energy, crazy hormones, feeling so incredibly lonely in this journey, tears, sickness (leading to hospitalisation), feeling like I've lost my personality, I mean, the list could go on. I wish I could have felt more Rhianna at the super bowl, but sadly not so. 'As a glass half full / over flowing kinda gal - this has been hard. These are new feelings for me and have at times felt scary. 'However, I'm so lucky to have the support of my family and friends - even though I have been a miserable b*tch. 'Being able to get pregnant and grow an actual human is of course the most special thing. I know that I'm so lucky. However it's not something my body, mind or hormones seem to enjoy: please tell me I am not alone in not enjoying this?! 'I'm very much looking forward to not having stabbing pains in my vagina, enjoying a pint(s) of margarita and just feeling like my old non-pregnant fun self — oh and meeting the baby, of course. Not long to go now!' Laura is best known for presenting the quiz shows Ready or Not on BBC One and Take Me Out: The Gossip on ITV2. Laura and Jonathan tied the knot in a dazzling beach ceremony in Porthscatho, Cornwall in September 2017.
