Washington Commanders training camp preview: Wide receivers
The Washington Commanders spent this offseason adding more help for quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Commanders traded for left tackle Laremy Tunsil and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Unfortunately, Washington is currently at odds with No. 1 wide receiver Terry McLaurin over a new contract. Ultimately, almost everyone believes the Commanders and McLaurin will reach a new agreement, giving Daniels an excellent 1-2 punch at wide receiver. What about the rest of Washington's wide receiver corps? In the latest installment of our training camp positional previews, we look at wide receiver. Offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury Assistant head coach/pass game coordinator Brian Johnson Wide receivers coach Bobby Engram Personnel analyst Kliff Kingsbury rebuilt his coaching stock with a huge year in Washington last year. He had opportunities to interview elsewhere, but chose to return. Johnson was the Eagles' offensive coordinator for one season before coming to Washington. He serves as another sounding board for quarterback Jayden Daniels. Engram enters his third season in Washington and has the trust and support of all of Washington's receivers. Welker joined Washington this offseason and gives the receivers two coaches who played the position at a high level in the NFL. WR Terry McLaurin WR Deebo Samuel WR Noah Brown Terry McLaurin is the unquestioned No. 1 wide receiver. McLaurin had a career year in his first season with Kingsbury as offensive coordinator and Jayden Daniels at quarterback. Contract issues aside, McLaurin will be on the field for Week 1. If a deal is not reached soon, McLaurin could miss some of training camp. Samuel can play outside, but he'll also see plenty of time in the slot. The Commanders will be creative with Samuel. His strength lies in his ability to gain yards after the catch. As for the other WR spot, we named Noah Brown, but it could also be Luke McCaffrey, depending on how well he performs in training camp. Luke McCaffrey Jaylin Lane (R) K.J. Osborn Michael Gallup Ja'Corey Brooks (R) Jacoby Jones (R) Chris Moore Michael Strachan There are lots of interesting names here. McCaffrey and Lane would appear to be the only locks of the bunch. Gallup is trying to revive his career after an injury and brief retirement. Perhaps he could play a similar role as Olamide Zaccheaus did last season for the Commanders if he makes the team. Osborn signed late last season, but barely saw the field. Washington re-signed him this offseason. Osborn has NFL experience and is still young. Brooks is one of the NFL's most intriguing undrafted free agents. He offers size and excellent ball skills. It will be interesting to see which of Washington's receivers stand out this summer. McCaffrey looks ready for a big leap, and Lane looked good this offseason. This should be a pretty solid group. The Commanders need McCaffrey to take a step forward. If that happens, this group suddenly looks much more formidable. Washington knows what it's getting in McLaurin and has a pretty good idea of what Samuel will bring. Noah Brown was called upon to be the No. 2 receiver during the first half of last season, and he played well. Brown is Washington's biggest receiver and is excellent at drawing flags. John Oliver's Moon Mammoth rebrand of Erie's minor league baseball team draws record-sized crowd
A minor league baseball team in Western Pennsylvania drew big crowds and lots of attention on Saturday night. The Erie SeaWolves, a Double-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, became the Erie Moon Mammoths for one day only. This quirky rebrand comes after the team was selected by comedian John Oliver and his team at HBO's Last Week Tonight for the surprise transformation. Mayor Joe Schember even issued a proclamation, declaring July 19, 2025, Moon Mammoth Day, to celebrate the occasion, NBC News affiliate WICU reports. "The inherent eccentricity of minor league baseball is something that we felt a real affinity with," Oliver said. "The more we looked into it the more we thought there might be fun to have. And, once we put out the request for 'who would be down for rebranding,' it was not surprising but edifying to see just how many teams went 'yeah we'd be down for that.'" The SeaWolves had no say on their rebrand name or logo. The Last Week Tonight team dug into Erie's history to pick Moon Mammoths, a name inspired by the 1991 discovery of woolly mammoth remains in a local lake. Oliver threw out the first pitch at the game, which drew a record-setting crowd of more than 7,000 fans. The SeaWolves will don the Mammoths' branding three more times throughout the summer. Jets' Sauce Gardner disrespected in ESPNs CB rankings
The New York Jets made Sauce Gardner the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history this week. General manager Darren Mougey inked Gardner to a four-year extension worth $120.4 million. The All-Pro CB will earn a league-leading $30.1 million on average per season. Coincidentally, ESPN released their cornerback position rankings after Gardner signed his extension. The list is the result of composite rankings, concluded by polling more than 70 anonymous coaches, executives, and scouts around the league. Gardner was arguably disrespected, coming in at No. 5, behind Pat Surtain II, Derek Stingley Jr., Denzel Ward, and Trent McDuffie. Gardner should have earned a top-three spot alongside Surtain II and Stingley Jr. "Gardner remains one of the more polarizing players in the league," ESPNs Jeremy Fowler summarized. "He reached superstardom as a rookie, wasting no time entering the conversation for the NFL's best cornerback. He made back-to-back All-Pro teams from 2022-23, but some evaluators have had problems with his play for the past two seasons." "Needs a bounce-back year in 2025," a veteran AFC personnel staffer said. "Lots of missed tackles and penalties and didn't make many plays last year. Too much, too soon and thought the NFL was easy." Gardner's Pro Football Focus defensive grade of 70.2 in 2024 was significantly lower than his 2022 (87.9) and 2023 (88.6) grades. PFF credited him with allowing 25 receptions on 47 targets for 391 yards and one touchdown. Those are stellar numbers for a cornerback tasked with covering No. 1 receivers every single week. Gardner was whistled with 10 penalties and 10 missed tackles. "The Jets are hoping their new defense, with coach Aaron Glenn and coordinator Steve Wilks asking him to play more man coverage, will bring out his best," Fowler concluded. "He'll be asked to do a lot after signing a four-year, $120.4-million extension this week." It'll be worth monitoring Gardner's usage and production in Glenn's defense this season.
