Former Union Minister, RWAs protest for solution to city's ‘stray dog menace'

The Hindu8 hours ago
Former Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel and several delegations of Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in Delhi held a protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday calling for government action to control the growing 'street dog menace' in the Capital.
Mr. Goel expressed concerns over the alarming rise in stray dog attacks, saying, 'The primary victims are children, women, and the elderly. Parks have become unsafe, children have stopped playing outdoors, and people fear even stepping out for a walk.'
He said there are 7 lakh dogs in the city. 'Sterilisation alone is no longer sufficient; mass relocation and proper infrastructure are necessary,' he said, adding that aggressive dogs should be relocated to designated shelters, where they can be given special care.
'It is not the responsibility of RWAs to manage stray dogs. This is the government's duty. We need to enforce a clear and effective 'No Dogs on Streets' policy now', the Mr. Goel said.
A poster at the protest site demanded 'stern action against those feeding dogs on the street'.
Earlier in the week, the Supreme Court, while hearing a Noida-based petitioner's plea alleging harassment in feeding stray dogs, remarked, 'Why don't you feed them in your own house?'

Kazipet railway mfg. unit work making fast progress: Rly Min

Kazipet: Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy jointly inspected the upcoming Railway Manufacturing Unit in Kazipet and praised its rapid progress and transformative potential. Built with an investment of Rs 500 crore, the factory is poised to start full-scale operations by 2026, fulfilling a decades-old public demand in Warangal. The Railway Minister said the facility, described by officials as a 'mega factory,' will not only manufacture railway coaches and engines but also handle design and production for metro trains. This ushers in cutting-edge technology to the heart of Telangana. Minister Vaishnav expressed satisfaction over the pace of construction and reiterated the central government's focus on modernizing the state's railway infrastructure. Vaishnav reaffirmed his commitment to improving railway infrastructure in Telangana through initiatives such as Vande Bharat trains, station modernisation, and enhanced connectivity. His direct supervision of the construction of Kazipet's RMU demonstrated the central government's dedication to completing the project on time. During the visit, the Union Railway Minister engaged with South Central Railway officials to discuss plans for doubling railway capacity in Telangana. Union Minister Kishan Reddy, speaking to the media on Saturday, during the inspection, said, 'On behalf of Warangal district and the entire Telangana state, we extend heartfelt gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Minister Ashwini Vaishnav for realizing the people's long-standing dream.' Reddy recalled that proposals for a coach factory in Warangal date back nearly 40 years, with former PM PV Narasimha Rao initiating early efforts. The vision gained momentum under Prime Minister Modi, who personally laid the foundation stone for the unit. He mentioned that the RMU will create direct jobs for approximately 3,000 individuals and will generate numerous indirect job opportunities through related sectors such as transportation, design, and maintenance. In addition to the RMU, Kishan Reddy highlighted the central government's approval of the textile industry and renovation of historic structures such as the mantapa in Warangal's pillared temple. He also recalled the development of 40 railway stations across Telangana, all of which are being upgraded to reflect local heritage and offer improved passenger amenities. The Center has completed half of the Warangal Ring Road project, and Reddy emphasized the need for an airport in Warangal to complement the region's growing infrastructure. He mentioned that repeated appeals were made to former CM KCR and have continued under the current Congress government to acquire the necessary land for aviation facilities. Responding to critics who question what the BJP government has delivered for Telangana, Reddy stated, 'Those who doubt should come and see the development firsthand. The transformation under Modi's leadership is visible and undeniable.' Kishan Reddy responded to a question by stating that, according to the RR policy implemented by the state government, they can recommend job placement for individuals who have given their land for the project. This will be considered, as has been done in other areas during project implementation.

BJP Banking On Bengal-Based Leaders For 2026 Poll Campaign

Last Updated: Observers suggest that this tactical pivot reflects a recognition of the need for stronger local resonance With the Bengal assembly elections to be held in 2026, both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the state's ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) have demonstrably begun to lay the groundwork for what promises to be another high-stakes electoral battle. This week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Mamata Banerjee effectively set the tone for their respective parties, actively engaging in strategies designed to energise their cadres and sway the electorate. The BJP, in particular, is signalling a significant shift in its campaign playbook for West Bengal. Sources indicate a deliberate move to empower and prioritise Bengal-based leaders to spearhead the ground campaign. This strategy aims to ensure that leaders deeply rooted in the state's cultural fabric will drive door-to-door outreach and orchestrate large-scale campaign events. While national 'star campaigners" like Prime Minister Modi and union home minister Amit Shah will maintain their usual impactful visits, the party plans to reduce the reliance on leaders brought in from other states. The emphasis, this time, is squarely on Bengali or Bangla-bhashi leaders to connect more organically with the local populace. Observers suggest that this tactical pivot reflects a recognition of the need for stronger local resonance. Any election for the BJP typically involves massive logistical planning and the deployment of teams from across the country to the target state. However, for Bengal 2026, leaders with stronger Bengali connections are being strategically prioritised. Names currently circulating as potential key campaigners include Tripura chief minister Manik Saha and MP Biplab Deb, both with strong regional appeal. Assam's Pabitra Margherita, known for his Bengali heritage, is also likely to be involved, alongside Jharkhand's Annapurna Devi and former union minister Smriti Irani, who has cultivated a notable rapport with the people of Bengal. This strategic adjustment aligns with Prime Minister Modi's recent directive on Friday, urging party workers to focus intensely on the 'Bengali asmita" (pride) agenda. During a rally in Durgapur, PM Modi emphasised the BJP's commitment to Bengal's identity, history, and development, directly countering the TMC's narrative. He began his address with traditional Bengali chants of 'Jai Ma Kali, Jai Ma Durga" and accused the TMC of hindering Bengal's progress while encouraging illegal infiltration. Party insiders further affirm that the over 50 BJP MLAs currently holding seats in the assembly will play a crucial role, working diligently to retain their constituencies and serving as vital grassroots connectors in the upcoming campaign. The TMC, under chief minister Mamata Banerjee, is also actively consolidating its base, with party leaders like Abhishek Banerjee setting ambitious targets for a fourth consecutive term, promising to counter the BJP's narrative and protect Bengal's interests. view comments First Published: July 20, 2025, 07:00 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
