UNC football lands Penn State linebacker Vilbert Smith in transfer portal
Bill Belichick and North Carolina continue to shine in the transfer portal. Most recently, they have drawn in four-star transfer linebacker Smith Vilbert from the perennially talented Big Ten Conference school, Penn State.
So far, the Tar Heels have already added linebackers Khmori House from Washington as well as bringing back Amare Campbell after he entered the portal.
Vilbert was an 88-ranked, three-star prospect out of high school in Montvale, New Jersey. After red-shirting in his first season, he has since played four years with Penn State fulfilling a backup role for the first three years and breaking out as a star last season. He had four tackles for a loss, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery in 16 games.
According to Brian Dohn from 247Sports, "Long, big frame with wide shoulders. Is 6-6, 250, and can play at 270 on the edge. Length is impressive and he uses it well. A former basketball player who concentrated on football as a senior. Great burst at the snap and has speed off the edge. Has the strength to disengage and change direction well for a player his size. Good body control. Possesses closing speed.
Quick learner and transitions practice field lessons to games. Moves well laterally and chases plays down on the backside. Improved technique is a must. Needs to learn to use combo moves. Increasing the ability to bend at the knees will help with leverage at the point of attack and against run. Lacks experience. Has to improve lower body strength. Two-to three-year starter at strong Power 5 program and mid-level NFL draft pick."
Vilbert should bolster an already revamped and talented defense led by Steve Belichick. The season will kick off on September 1, 2025, against the Big 12 Conference's TCU.

BOOM! Ohio State receives commitment from 2028 running back from Florida
BOOM! Ohio State receives commitment from 2028 running back from Florida While Ohio State is still putting the finishing touches on the 2026 class and has the framework in place for the 2027 class, the Buckeyes just got their first commitment for the 2028 cycle with the addition of Florida running back Elijah Newman-Hill. Out of Tampa, Florida, it's still too early for Hill to be ranked by the major recruiting services but you can bet if Ohio State offered and accepted a commitment from a kid that doesn't graduate until 2028, the coaching staff must be impressed with what it sees. And for Hill, the feeling must be mutual if he was ready to get on board shortly after attending one of the camps at Ohio State. Though Hill plays on both sides of the ball in high school, there's no doubt he's being looked at as a running back for OSU. This past season, he carried the ball 80 times for 829 yards for Blake High School. It's pretty early on in the 2028 recruiting class, and more than ever, in today's age, it'll still take a lot to keep him in the recruiting class. ontact/Follow us @BuckeyesWire on X (formerly Twitter) and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Ohio State news, notes and opinion. Steelers WR DK Metcalf praises 'jitterbug' Calvin Austin: 'He's explosive as heck'
Steelers WR DK Metcalf praises 'jitterbug' Calvin Austin: 'He's explosive as heck' Steelers WR Calvin Austin III could be in for a Year 4 breakout — and it wouldn't surprise DK Metcalf one bit. At mandatory minicamp, Metcalf wasted little time complimenting what makes Austin stand out (courtesy of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette): '[Calvin Austin III's] a jitterbug out there, but he's explosive as heck,' Metcalf said. 'Just looking forward to lining up with him for the rest of these last couple days of camp and then moving on to training camp, and then just starting to work off each other in different route concepts.' Steelers wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni also spoke highly of Austin at mandatory minicamp — saying the fourth-year wide receiver is slated for the WR2 role, and could potentially work as the primary receiver due to the differences between him and Metcalf. Here's to hoping Austin's explosiveness — a quality that had Metcalf in awe — will translate well with the addition of new Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers on offense. Big 12 reveals 2025-26 basketball schedule matrix featuring tough Colorado opponents
Big 12 reveals 2025-26 basketball schedule matrix featuring tough Colorado opponents The Big 12 announced the conference scheduling matrix for the 2025-26 men's basketball season Thursday morning. For the upcoming season, each program will have a home-and-home series with three conference opponents and face the other 12 Big 12 teams once, with six games at home and six on the road, for an 18-game Big 12 schedule, which is two fewer than last year. The matrix produces the most balanced schedule, taking into account both travel and competitiveness. A schedule with dates and times will be announced closer to the start of the regular season. Seven of Colorado's nine home opponents were postseason teams in 2024-25. The Buffs will host top programs like Arizona and Kansas a single time, while Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU and UCF will also make the trek to Boulder. Colorado's home-and-home series opponents will be Arizona State, Utah and Texas Tech, who were Elite Eight participants last season. The Buffs have some challenging Big 12 road games this year, traveling to BYU, who have the No. 1 overall recruit A.J. Dybansta and NCAA runner-up Houston. Single away games against Cincinnati, Baylor, West Virginia and Iowa State are also on the schedule. While we are still a ways away from tipping off the college basketball season, if you're itching for some fun basketball content, you can check out our updated Big 12 basketball uniform rankings.
