Metal lords Parkway Drive deliver triumphant symphony gig at unlikely venue
But it is rare to see headbanging in sync and the 'horns' being thrown by a black tie-clad audience in the hallowed concert hall.
Australian metalcore heroes Parkway Drive staged their once-in-a-lifetime Home concert with a full symphony orchestra and choir on Monday to celebrate their 20th anniversary.
The 'screamo meets strings' concept sounded ambitious on paper, with the band following in the footsteps of heavy metal legends Metallica who joined forces with the San Francisco Symphony for their S & M live album in 1999.
How would a sold-out crowd more accustomed to moshpits and death circles cope with a seated concert where the heavy hits they had screamed along to for two decades were reimagined with swelling strings, blasts of horns and the percussive force of three drummers?
The band and the audience declared it a triumph by the end of a two act concert which redefined the powerful musicality of the Byron Bay mosh masters.
Expectations were high when the five Parkway members – Winston McCall, Jeff Ling, Luke Kilpatrick, Ben Gordon, and Jai O'Connor – took the stage.
Many in the audience had entered the 'Best Dressed' competition in the lobby before taking their seats where the stage was set with a stunning native floral arrangement.
After an orchestral Welcome to Country, the Parkway members – also suited, with McCall sporting Gucci loafers – strode onto the stage and cranked into gear with their new 'bandmates'.
McCall's vocal shredding was at first lost in the wash of a 'band' even louder than his metal-riffing mates, but he soon found his voice in the mix.
With the assistance of music director and arranger Joel Farland, they wisely chose songs from their extensive catalogue to present in this new form from festival setlist faves including Glitch and Carrion to darkly melodic offerings The Colour of Leaving and Darker Still.
The concert sounded like the soundtrack to a horror thriller yet to be made, although it was filmed for a forthcoming documentary film Home to be released later this year.
The orchestra members looked to be having as much fun as the band, with several players headbanging as vigorously as the audience during the performance.
For a beaming McCall, who on occasion appeared moved to tears by the experience, the concert was a dream come true.
He told the adoring crowd, some of whom had travelled from America and Europe for the concert, it was a lofty ambition the metal frontman didn't dare to hope a band like Parkway Drive could realise.
'This is a dream come true, (even though) you don't openly dream of things like this,' he told the fans to huge cheers.
'Anyone who has wanted to sing at the Opera House, this is your shot. And I've just got to say, you guys look f***ing incredible tonight, thank you!'
Special guests included First Nations artists Matthew Doyle, Brock Tutt, Josh Sly and rapper Nooky and punk vocalist Hevenshe (Jenna McDougall of Tonight Alive).

‘Revolving door': Gross response to star's photo says it all
OPINION As soon as I saw the photos of Tammy Hembrow and Bailey Smith over the weekend, I could already predict the comments. But it wasn't long before they actually appeared … worse than I'd imagined. The fitness influencer, 31, and the AFL star, 24, were snapped having a casual lunch together, and apparently that was enough to spark a rampant, sexist pile-on. You see, it's been eight weeks since Hembrow and her ex-husband Matt Zukowski announced their divorce, after seven months of marriage. So predictably, the internet was not happy that a woman – who, God forbid, is a MOTHER – enjoyed a date with someone else 'so soon' after a break-up. The sexist backlash Under every article and new Instagram post she shared since the 'news' broke, were the same tired jabs. 'You can't be alone, can you?' read one – as if singledom is somehow morally better and the ultimate display of self-love. (I'm so sick of this narrative by the way … that a woman must go through a forced period of isolation after a break-up or else she'll never truly find herself.) Then there were the 'revolving door' comments. 'Who's this then? I can't keep up,' someone else said, despite definitely keeping up with Hembrow's dating life, parasocially invested in every detail. 'He's like seven years younger,' other comments criticised – the same people who probably have their dating app filters set to men 10 years older than them. Then came the mother-policing. 'Such a bad, bad example for her kids. They'll be ashamed of her when they grow up and read how many dudes mum had,' one wrote. 'Can't even believe a mother would do it honestly. Have a break lady,' another said. And of course, there was just straight-up slut-shaming. One comment, from a journalist, stopped me in my tracks yesterday. In a particularly judgey article, they suggested her bed in one of her recent Instagram posts looked like it had been 'given a good thrashing' and therefore, Smith had 'accomplished his mission'. I nearly vomited in my mouth when I saw the journo was a woman. It just shows how deeply internalised misogyny can run. The gross double standard The speed of the pile-on reveals more about us than about her. Because when a man in the public eye hops from one relationship to another, he's a 'lad' or a 'player' or even seen as a 'catch'. But when a woman, especially one who's beautiful, successful, and posts on her own terms, does it – she's 'desperate' and 'a bad mother'. This is the ugliest form of the relationship and sexual double standard. And it's not even hypothetical. Hembrow's ex, Zukowski, has previously boasted about having over 100 sexual partners (which he literally kept track of in his phone), appeared on a dating show where he dated multiple people in a few weeks, and since then, has had multiple public relationships. Another one of her exes, Matt Poole, with whom she shares a daughter, Posy, has also been more publicly linked with other women, including reality star Bella Cicero and Annelyse Oatway, who he recently welcomed a child with. Meanwhile, Reece Hawkins, father of Hembrow's other two kids, Wolf and Saskia, has been engaged to London Goheen, dated OnlyFans model Ruby Burciaga, and recently, fitness influencer Olivia Kelly. Nobody has been inundating their social media with advice to 'have a break' – and yes, they're all high-profile influencers too. Yet Hembrow, who has had several long-term, serious relationships, is treated as if she's done something terrible for simply trying to move on. 'Deeply patriarchal beliefs' behind pile on According to psychologist Carly Dober, this double standard stems from 'deeply patriarchal beliefs and attitudes about women's sexuality and romantic lives'. 'Historically, women have been judged more harshly for sexual activity than men, and in many cultures, religious and traditional beliefs restrict female sexuality,' said the psychologist, who works at Enriching Lives Psychology. This sort of public shaming, especially when repeated as it is with Hembrow, can lead to feelings of 'shame, anxiety, and low self-esteem' in women. Leave Hembrow be, please I can't believe that in 2025, we're still seeing the message that a woman's worth depends on her chastity and that a mother can't also be a sexual or romantic person. At the end of the day, Hembrow is a grown woman and has every right to pursue love just like anyone else. And even if she just wants a cheeky rebound or a one-night stand – let her. It's none of our business, and last time I checked, it's not a crime. If a woman's dating life upsets you so much, ask yourself why you care so deeply. You might think your comments are about concern, but they're really about control. And frankly, it's time you let that go.

There's a public holiday for the Ekka today – here's what you need to know
If you work or study in Brisbane, you may be entitled to a public holiday today. Here's why, and what you need to know. Across Queensland, residents are entitled to a public holiday for their region's agricultural, horticultural or industrial show. There's no statewide show day, so instead these are held on separate days, depending on the region. In total, there are about 60 different show days. Some of these are observed across multiple regions on the one day. Today, Wednesday August 13, is Queensland's most well-known of all of its show holidays. This one is a holiday to celebrate the state's annual agricultural show – the Ekka. It's sometimes called 'People's Day' or is referred to as the 'show holiday' or, because it usually falls on a Wednesday, as 'Ekka Wednesday'. The Ekka, otherwise known as the Queensland Agricultural Show, is the largest of Queensland's agricultural shows, often attracting 400,000 visitors a year as well as 10,000 animals and 21,000 competition entrants. It's held in August each year at the Brisbane Showgrounds and has been running annually since 1876, with a few exceptions. Traditionally, it has provided an opportunity for Queenslanders from across the state to showcase livestock, horticulture, creative arts, and other talents. One of its most celebrated traditions is its famous strawberry sundaes. Ekka Wednesday is generally one of the busiest days of the entire show, with the Grand Parade being held. Importantly, your eligibility for show holidays is dependent on where you work or go to school, not where you live. Today's holiday applies to people within the Brisbane City Council area. Show holidays vary around the state. The Ekka show holiday in regions near Brisbane like Logan City, Lockyer Valley, Scenic Rim and the Somerset Region was observed on Monday, August 11. Residents of areas like Moreton Bay, Gladstone, Bundaberg and the Redlands also had a public holiday on Monday for the Ekka. But in Ipswich, for example, the show holiday was held in May. If the Ekka isn't your thing, many attractions like museums, galleries and markets will be running on Wednesday. Many cafes, restaurants and bars will also be open. It's best to check with each individual establishment before visiting, and be aware a public holiday surcharge may apply. Many shops will also be open, but some will have reduced opening hours. Depending on your employment arrangements, working on a public holiday like a show day may attract penalty rates. It's best to refer to your specific award to find out how this applies to you.
