Denver Pioneers men's ice hockey travels to Frozen Four in St. Louis, face Western Michigan in semifinals

CBS News09-04-2025
Denver Pioneers men's ice hockey is heading to its 20th Frozen Four. The Pios flew out to St. Louis Tuesday, where they will face the Western Michigan Broncos at Enterprise Center, home of the NHL's St. Louis Blues, in the national semifinals.
"We want to be the team that no one wants to play," head coach David Carle told CBS Colorado.
The Pios are trying to repeat something the program hasn't done since 1961 -- win three college hockey national championships in four seasons. They're also looking to win back-to-back national championships following its
2024 victory
.
"We've been here a lot of times through the last four years, so comfortable in these moments," forward Connor Caponi told CBS Colorado. "I think nobody is getting nervous."
As
reported
by DU, "Denver now gets set for another championship rematch as the Pioneers and Broncos met less than three weeks ago in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Championship Game at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. WMU rallied from a 3-0 deficit and won 4-3 in a double-OT outing to be the first squad to win both the NCHC regular season and tournament championships since North Dakota in 2020-21."
"Denver, they're a great team," said Pat Ferschweiler, head coach of Western Michigan, in an interview with CBS Colorado. "They're organized; they're defending champions. There's a lot of accolades you can give to Denver. But we've played them tight, and we've played them well three times, and I think that would give anyone confidence."
The semifinal between the Pios and conference rival Broncos is scheduled 3 p.m. Thursday, April 10. The winner will advance to the championship round and play against the decider for the semifinal between Boston University and Penn State. The national championship is scheduled 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 12.
Among other accolades involving DU hockey this season: Defenseman
Zeev Buium
has been named a 2025 Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick finalist, which recognizes college hockey's top player.
"I think we know we have a fantastic team, and they have a great team as well," Caponi said. "I'm sure it's going to be a fantastic game. It's going to be a part of it getting under each other's skin."

Will the Broncos carry 4 running backs on 53-man roster?

NFL teams typically carry three running backs on the active roster, but the Denver Broncos do not have a typical backfield. Denver added veteran J.K. Dobbins during free agency this summer, and he appears poised to serve as the RB1a with second-round draft pick RJ Harvey filling the RB1b role. Tyler Badie seems likely to make the 53-man roster as a favorite of coach Sean Payton, and Jaleel McLaughlin was one of the team's most productive RBs in 2024. So, will the Broncos carry four running backs on the active roster in 2025? 'We talk about the third quarterback, the fourth tailback," Payton said last week. "We talk about do you get to the game with six receivers? There are all these, and special teams factor in quite a bit. So there's the, let's say, the standard depth and then the exceptions. Because ultimately I've said this, the right 53 is so important. So that doesn't mean we have to constantly follow the model of what we've always done. If the fourth tailback is better… So we do go through all of that, and George [Paton] and I -- in fact, yesterday went through the next 10-day schedule, 12 days, 13 days we're at the cutdown. Then we're signing practice squad players. It's all part of the equation. "I would say every year's a little different. It's just a little different than any year before. It's just a little different. It might be because of one guy who plays special teams. Every year is just a little different. I was taught at a young age, the most significant thing is the right 53, so that's what keeps you up at night, making sure we're finding that group.' Payton didn't directly answer whether or not Denver will carry four RBs, but he did note that some positions are deeper than others, and the team doesn't follow an exact model every year. So if it makes more sense to carry four RBs this year and cut a player at a different position, the Broncos will do it. If Dobbins, Harvey, Badie and McLaughlin are Payton's preferred four, that would leave Audric Estime and Blake Watson looking for jobs after roster cuts next week. We don't know how things will shake out, though, so all we can do is guess at this point. Stay tuned. Denver has until Aug. 26 to set an initial 53-man roster. Nuggets predicted to win this many games during the 2025-26 NBA regular season

Nuggets predicted to win this many games during the 2025-26 NBA regular season originally appeared on The Sporting News The Denver Nuggets completed their third consecutive 50-win season and made their seventh straight playoff appearance. However, they fell short of the NBA finals again, losing in seven games to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals. Before the 2024-25 season ended, the Nuggets had a coaching transition from Michael Malone to David Adelman. The latter became the full-time head coach after filling the role on an interim basis. This development, as well as roster additions, had Bleacher Report's Andy Bailey predicting the Nuggets' record for the upcoming 2025-26 season. The Denver Nuggets will maintain their streak of 50-win seasons Bailey predicted the Nuggets to finish with a 54-28 regular-season record, four wins more than their 2024-25 total. Likewise, if the projection comes true, that's tied for the fourth-most wins in a season in franchise history. 'The Denver Nuggets have the near-consensus best player in the world in Nikola Jokić (there are surely some fans in Milwaukee, L.A., and Oklahoma City who'd disagree) and two members of the starting lineup that won a championship with him two years ago,' he wrote. In addition to Jokic, Jamal Murray, and Aaron Gordon, the Nuggets welcomed back Bruce Brown and signed Tim Hardaway Jr. to a contract. Likewise, they traded for stretch forward Cameron Johnson and big man Jonas Valanciunas. Christian Braun, DaRon Holmes II, and Julian Strawther bolster the Nuggets' rotation. Meanwhile, FanDuel Sportsbook has the Nuggets' over/under at 53.5 wins. Denver will open the season on October 23 against the Golden State Warriors. Bill Speros also wrote that the Nuggets will travel the 13th-most miles (44,457.40) across 45 time zones and 20 road trips. The 2022-23 NBA champions will also have 12 back-to-back games on schedule.
