RAI Cinema Chief Paolo Del Brocco on Selling ‘Heads or Tails' in Cannes and a New Victor Kossakovsky Doc Made With Italian Botanist Stefano Mancuso (EXCLUSIVE)

Yahoo22-05-2025
Roughly a year after its launch, Italian state broadcaster RAI's new sales unit for film is at Cannes with its first full-fledged slate headlined by surreal Western 'Heads or Tails' starring John C. Reilly as Buffalo Bill during his stay in Italy that is launching in Un Certain Regard.
The RAI Cinema International Distribution slate also includes a new under-the-radar doc by prominent Russian documentary filmmaker Victor Kossakovsky, known for 'Gunda' and 'Aquarela.' Kossakovsky is now making another ecology-themed doc titled 'Tears for Firs' in collaboration with Italian botanist Stefano Mancuso, a pioneer in the plant neurobiology movement who has written several best-selling books including 'Tree Stories.' 'It's about the entire life cycle of trees and the correlation between plant life and the life of our planet,' said RAI Cinema chief Paolo Del Brocco.

Del Brocco in Cannes spoke to Variety about how the new Italian sales outfit has been faring and what's in its pipeline.
Why did you launch a sales unit and how has it been going?
We are Italy's main movie producers, so it made sense for us to complete the integration of our film business by starting to directly handle sales on a small portion of the films that we produce, co-produce, and distribute in order to give them greater visibility in global markets. Both in terms of commercial sales and distribution and also greater participation in festivals. We have essentially geared our sales side mainly towards new Italian cinema, as our slate shows. And after a year we have a more solid lineup and some results to show. We started with Margherita Vicario's musical comedy 'Gloria!' which sold to 40 countries, we sold Trudy Styler's documentary 'Posso Entrare? An Ode to Naples' to 35 countries, including to Hulu in the U.S. And we recently had great success with 'Madly' by 'Perfect Strangers' director Paolo Genovese that has sold to 40 territories and is still selling. More importantly, like 'Perfect Strangers' we are selling remake rights. We just sold 'Madly' to China and Paolo will be attending the Shanghai Film Festival with this film.
What are your expectations for 'Heads or Tails' in terms of sales?
So, first off, it's the second feature by these two directors, Alessio Rigo de Righi and Matteo Zoppi, whose previous film 'The Tale of King Crab' made a splash in Directors' Fortnight. It's a very original film which I think is going to sell well and we are also distributing it in Italy, so we really believe in it. The cast is excellent because, besides John C. Reilly ,it has Alessandro Borghi ('Supersex') and French star Nadia Tereszkiewicz ('Red Island'). And it's a very gripping story about when Buffalo Bill came to Italy. So it's a very buzzy film and we've had plenty of buyers at the market screenings. Of course the fact that it's playing towards the end of the festival means we can't benefit from reviews yet, but it is sparking great interest and these are directors who we want to continue to work with going forward.
Below are other standout fresh titles in RAI Cinema International Distribution slate:
— 'A Year of School,' directed by Laura Samani. This is the second feature by Samani who made a splash with 'Small Body' that was a 2021 Cannes Critics' Week standout. It's an adaptation of Italian author Giani Stuparich's 1929 novel of the same name that's been transposed to 2007 and set in all-male high-school class in Trieste where the arrival of an exuberant 17-year-old Swedish girl named Fred disrupts existing dynamics.
— 'Siblings,' directed by Greta Scarano. Matilda De Angelis ('Fuori') stars as the sister of an autistic man named Omar who is forced to return to her hometown to care for her older brother named Omar in this tender comedy that marks the directorial debut of Scarano, an actor known for roles in 'The Name of The Rose' and the Italian adaptation of British TV series 'Liar.'
— 'Elisa — Io la volevo uccidere.' A new psychological drama by Italian director Leonardo Di Costanzo ('The Inner Cage,' 'The Intruder') toplining French-Moroccan multi-hyphenate Roschd Zem ('Days of Glory,' 'The Innocent') and Italy's Barbara Ronchi ('Kidnapped').
–– 'Christmas Song,' a doc by Roberta Torre ('Tano to Die For') about female inmates in a Milan penitentiary who are preparing to perform Christmas carols behind bars and provides several backstories of why they are in jail.

Less Witchy Drinks in the French Quarter With the August Restaurant Closings

is an award-winning food and travel writer living in New Orleans. Her work has appeared in Atlas Obscura, The Local Palate, and the Los Angeles Times. It's August, which always brings a slew of restaurant closings in New Orleans. This past month, some heavy hitters and much-loved staples have shuttered. Restaurants include a longstanding Italian spot, a Filipino absinthe bar, and a French Quarter wine stop. Rising rent causes Tatlo to close after less than a year After less than a year of bewitching French Quarter diners, chef Cristina Quackenbush closed her restaurant Tatlo Divine Cuisine & Absinthe House on July 27. Citing a disconnect with the landlord along with no interest in having her rent raised to $18,000 a month, Quackenbush opted to close. But in her typical positive way, she has no regrets. 'We'll land somewhere where the rent is reasonable and I can make money. We'll be back. I'm so proud of what we did here.' Regulars save Italian mainstay Mona Lisa On August 1, the owners of Mona Lisa announced that they were informed (by text) to vacate the restaurant in 60 days. After that, restaurant regulars got busy. Fans of the Italian comfort cafe organized the Night of 1000 Mona Lisas for August 16, with attendees dressing like the Van Gogh masterpiece for a protest block party. On August 11, that dress-up party turned into a celebration. The owner changed his mind, allowing the restaurant owners to keep their Italian cafe on Royal Street open. Farrow Stephenson and Tom Moore have owned this beacon of queer community for 20 years. While they imagined it was possible to lose the space with a new owner coming in, they never thought the break-up would be by text. The owner and his realtor clearly underestimated the power of the New Orleans community that has supported the funky Italian eatery since 1987. Regulars love Mona Lisa for so many reasons. Where else can you see so many quirky versions of the Van Gogh masterpiece? The menu of Italian American favorites includes a cheesy lasagna, a Mediterranean salad with homemade feta vinaigrette, calzones stuffed with cheese, and the pizza, always loaded with savory bits atop a thick-ish crust with just the right chew. Mardi Gras pasta, made with shrimp and andouille sausage, is a house special. Prices are affordable, service is warm, and all pronouns are welcome. No word on what this all means for Bennachin, the African restaurant that dates to 1992. It is next door to Mona Lisa, with shared restrooms, all in the same building that was sold to the New York investor. Poke-Chan switches up its cuisine Poke-Chan, known for serving bowls of veggies and marinated raw fish, closed at 2809 St. Claude Avenue last month. The restaurant is staying in the family, though. Opened eight years ago, Susan Nguyen is the only original owner staying on in the business, which will become a Vietnamese restaurant she'll run with her mother in the coming months. A French Quarter wine bar retires Effervescence, a swanky wine bar and restaurant on the edge of the French Quarter since 2017, will close August 24. Owner and New Orleans native Chrystal Hinds announced that she will be retiring for a second time. She left a career in nursing to open her dream restaurant. 'I have been fortunate to spend eight and a half years pursuing my dream,' she said in the announcement. After thanking her chefs, Brenna Sanders and Evan Ingram, she added, 'After a well-deserved holiday, I will be ready to support whatever their next endeavor will entail.' Sounds like that retirement may be short-lived. Horn's closes due to 'brutal' summer Owner Kappa Horn closed her breakfast/lunch spot Horn's in the Marigny July 20. She urged followers to 'please go out and support a local restaurant. This summer has been brutal.' When it opened in 2014, Horn's was originally located at 1940 Dauphine Street. When that building sold, Horn's was relocated to 2440 Chartres Street, formerly home to Steve and Becky Himmelfarb's beloved Cake Café. Horn still owns the Uptown diner Slim Goodies. A sudden closure in the Marigny The Indian fusion restaurant Silk Road closed without notice or explanation earlier this month. Signs in the window say 'G's Kitchen, Coming Soon.' The restaurant was formerly known as Schiro's Bar and Café.

Beyoncé wins first Emmy for Western-themed halftime show

LOS ANGELES — Beyoncé has an Emmy to go with her 35 Grammys. Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, her legal name, was listed as one of a half dozen people on a team that won outstanding costumes for a variety, nonfiction or reality show for 'Beyoncé Bowl,' her Western-themed halftime show on Netflix's Christmas NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans. The show in her hometown of Houston brought the live debut of songs from her 'Cowboy Carter' album. 3 Beyoncé has won her first Emmy for her 'Beyoncé Bowl' halftime show on Netflix's Christmas NFL game. AP The special Emmy is Beyoncé's first. She has been nominated for 10 others without a victory. And it takes her halfway to an EGOT with her 35 Grammys. She still needs a Tony and an Oscar to complete the quartet. The award was among a handful of so-called juried Emmys announced Tuesday that are determined outside the regular voting process and given out by committees, with no official nominees. They are usually highly technical — several involve individual elements of the animation process — and rarely go to famous names. 3 The singer has already won 35 Grammys. REUTERS 3 Beyoncé and her daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, perform during halftime during a Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans game on Dec. 25, 2024, in Houston. AP They are announced in advance and handed out at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards ceremony next month. Beyoncé is also nominated for best variety special as a producer of 'Beyoncé Bowl' and for best direction of a variety special. Her husband, Jay-Z, is competing against her as an executive producer of Kendrick Lamar's Super Bowl halftime show.
