Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes pushes NFL to prioritize player safety in 18-game season controversy
In his interview with CNBC, Patrick Mahomes wasn't shy when speaking about the possible consequences of an 18-game regular season—a scenario the NFL has long publicly considered.
The two-time Super Bowl MVP spoke about the matter during CNBC Sports' videocast, commenting that an extended season might result in additional injuries unless teams are provided extra rest time. Patrick Mahomes stressed a request for additional bye weeks and intervals between matches to safeguard players' health during a demanding season.
"I think that you'd have to find a way to have more bye weeks, more time spread out. Because, I mean, you've seen the amount of injuries that have kind of piled up there at the end of seasons, and you want to have the best players playing in the biggest games," said Patrick Mahomes, "And so if there were a way to get to 18 games, I'm not—I'm not a big fan of it. But if there were a way, I think you got to add some bye weeks in there to give more time for guys' bodies.

Mahomes ranked top QB .. with fewer 1st place votes, Brock Purdy not in Top 10 | FIRST THINGS FIRST
His remarks are made at a time of new scrutiny for player workload and scheduling. The Kansas City Chiefs endured an unusually condensed schedule last season, with three games in only eleven days and prime-time showdowns on both Black Friday and Christmas Day.
Mahomes' position mirrors that of other players and coaches league-wide, worried that an extended season without modifications will accelerate careers to the detriment of late-season quality and career longevity.
The current 17-game structure, adopted in 2021, already puts team resources and player endurance to the test.

As the NFL considers how to increase its international presence and profits by lengthening the season, players such as Patrick Mahomes remain the voice of reason regarding what is of ultimate importance—protecting the players and making sure that the best players are on the field when it matters. The league's choice, whenever it is made, will have far-reaching effects on the way the game is played and how careers unfold.

After fans and analysts dubbed the Florida Panthers' third line the 'big 3,' Marchand leaned right into the hype, dropping a photo that instantly went viral. It was a light-hearted but confident response to a growing conversation about how impactful that line has been this season. Brad Marchand leans into 'big 3' buzz with Instagram post The viral moment came after a social media post jokingly asked if the Panthers had the best third line in the NHL. Featuring Brad Marchand, Anton Lundell, and Eetu Luostarinen, the line has drawn serious attention for its strong two-way play and offensive contributions, despite being labeled a 'third' unit. Rather than stay quiet, Marchand embraced the chatter. He posted a photo of himself alongside Anton Lundell and Eetu Luostarinen in response to the 'big 3' tweet, playfully leaning into the buzz surrounding the Florida Panthers' third line. It was a playful yet pointed nod to the 'big 3' comparison that's been floating around hockey Twitter and beyond. Marchand's response wasn't just fun, it underlined the growing belief that Florida's depth scoring has been one of its greatest strengths. As analysts debated top forward trios across the league, many began to question if any third line had outperformed what Florida's had on the ice this postseason. Whether it's logging critical minutes against top competition or chipping in with timely goals, the line's presence has added stability and threat to every game Florida plays. Marchand, acquired mid-season, brings championship experience and fire, while Lundell and Luostarinen have grown into versatile, high-IQ players capable of dominating both ends of the rink. Together, they've been responsible for several momentum-shifting plays and have outperformed many top-six units across the league in key playoff matchups. Their chemistry, balance, and confidence have turned what was once considered a support unit into a headline act. Brad Marchand's viral post did more than just make fans laugh, it put a spotlight on one of the most effective lines in the league right now. The Panthers' third line may be flying under the radar in name, but their performance and Marchand's reaction makes it clear: this "big 3" is no joke.
