Robbie Williams says fan photos can trigger anxiety and cause ‘discomfort'

CNN18-04-2025
Robbie Williams has opened up about the discomfort and anxiety he feels when interacting with strangers.
In a series of screenshots posted to Instagram on Thursday, the British singer shared his feelings on being approached for photos with fans while out in public.
'Every interaction – with strangers or even people I know well – fills me with discomfort,' admitted the former 'Take That' member. 'I mask it well. But social interaction still frightens me,' he said, adding that the fear kept him from going out for years.
Williams said he was writing his thoughts while on a domestic flight in the United States, having been approached three times by his fellow passengers.
'One of them handed me a lovely note… and then asked for a photo,' he said, adding that he wrote back explaining he had been 'up since 4:30 a.m., had two hours' sleep, and wrangled four kids through the airport.'
'I explained that if they came and took a photo with me, my anxiety would spike - because then the whole cabin would start wondering who I am.'
After the first request, another fan asked for a photo and Williams responded with a similar note. '(I) said that when we land, I'll be trying to shepherd four children… I just hoped the note might be enough.'
As he was writing the second note, a third passenger walked up to him and asked for a photo 'outright' – to which the singer said he obliged.
Though he sees it as being a 'service' to make others happy, Williams criticized the expectation that celebrities should be 'accessible 24/7' to the public.
'I reckon over 50% – probably much more – couldn't name one of my albums, let alone say they've bought a ticket to a show,' he added, saying it was 'off' to think that everyone who asks for a photo has had a hand in his success. 'They're no more fans of me than they are of the Leaning Tower of Pisa or Big Ben. They're fans of fame.'
Williams, however, didn't want to deter true fans from making their feelings known if they spot him in public.
'If we cross paths in the wild and you are a fan of me, I want you to tell me. That means a lot,' wrote the 'Angels' singer. 'But here's an open question: do you think there should be a limit to how many people can access you in a day?'
Williams, whose biographical musical drama 'A Better Man' released last year, said he panics 'every time' a stranger approaches him, noting he can have 20 such daily interactions on average - and they're not always positive.
'What if I'm having a challenging mental health day – is it okay if I don't want that captured by a stranger?' he asked, adding that there might be some personal reasons why he's 'sad' and doesn't want to 'perform.'
The post was filled with sympathetic comments, including from other famous faces.
'This made me cry… thank you for being vulnerable and saying how you feel,' wrote Paris Hilton.
'Impeccably articulate on this. I've struggled terribly my whole career with the same,' commented singer Paloma Faith.
Earlier this month, Williams revealed that he had been diagnosed with scurvy, a vitamin deficiency. He also spoke about struggles with his mental health, including anxiety and depression.
Williams is set to kick off a tour in May that will take him to the United Kingdom, Ireland and Europe through the summer.

[WATCH] Video of Krushna Abhishek and Kiku Sharda's heated argument from The Great Indian Kapil Show goes viral

By News Desk Published on August 21, 2025, 15:16 IST Last updated August 21, 2025, 15:18 IST The Great Indian Kapil Show is once again making headlines, but this time not because of Kapil Sharma himself. Instead, a video of comedians Krushna Abhishek and Kiku Sharda engaged in a heated argument on the sets of the show has gone viral on social media, leaving fans shocked. In the viral video, both actors can be seen exchanging sharp words during what appears to be a disagreement over shooting schedules. At one point, Kiku Sharda is heard saying, 'Am I just doing timepass here?' (translated) to which Krushna Abhishek, visibly upset, replies, 'Alright then, you do it. I have no problem.' (translated) He even folds his hands and adds sarcastically, 'Brother, I don't mind at all, you carry on. I am leaving.' (translated) As the argument continues, people on the set are seen trying to calm Krushna down. Kiku then says, 'That's not the point. If I was called, let me finish first.' (translated) Krushna responds by saying, 'Brother, I love you. I respect you. I don't want to raise my voice.' (translated) Kiku, however, insists, 'It's not about raising your voice, you are taking it in a different way.' Sydney Sweeney insists her bathwater soap seemed to offend 'mainly girls'

Sydney Sweeney was fascinated by the women who criticised her bathwater soap. The 27-year-old actress teamed up with the men's personal hygiene brand Dr. Squatch in May to launch a soap called Bathwater Bliss - which she claims contained her bathwater - and she has insisted other women were the main critics of the stunt. She told the Wall Street Journal newspaper: "It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting." Referring to the viral racy scene in Jacob Elordi's 2023 film Saltburn, she continued: "They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi's bathwater." The "medium grit" soap bar had olive, sustainable palm and coconut oils, shea butter, natural fragrance, Sydney's bath water, sand, mica, kaolin clay and sea salt. Bathwater Bliss launched on June 6, and sold out in seconds, while the Euphoria star insisted she isn't fazed by any backlash as she likes to keep track of what her audience is saying. She explained: "I think it's important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying, because everything is a conversation with the audience.' Meanwhile, Sydney recently came under fire for an American Eagle denim campaign. The retailer revealed a series of adverts with the star with the tagline: "Sydney Sweeney has great jeans," but the pun was met with a fierce backlash on social media as the phrase "great genes" has a historical association with eugenicists - who claim that humanity can be improved genetically through selective breeding. While Sydney is yet to address the American Eagle jeans advert, the brand defended the actress amid the online criticism. The fashion label wrote in an Instagram post on August 1: "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story. "We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone." American Eagle's chief marketing officer Craig Brommers said that signing up Sydney was big for the company because the actress is the "It girl of the moment". He told WWD: "I think this is potentially one of the biggest gets in American Eagle history. "Sydney Sweeney is the It girl of the moment, and she is helping us create the It jeans campaign of the season. Sydney really encapsulates American Eagle. "She is the girl who can play the red carpet, but she's also the girl next door, and that duality really defines Gen Z and Millennials."

Why is everyone watching ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty'?

Last week, Malala Yousafzai posted to Instagram a photograph of herself holding a plump peach. The image is charming yet unexceptional, simply capturing the Nobel Peace Prize laureate enjoying some seasonal fruit. But paired with the caption 'Counting the minutes until Wednesday,' it set the comments section ablaze. Her followers turned to capital letters and crying emoji to express their excitement. 'Malala always on the right side of history i know that's right!' reads one response.
