Tajh Ariza leads Westchester to its 16th City Section boys' basketball title

A wild, delirious roar came from of Tajh Ariza on Friday night after his dunk with no time left on the clock started a joyous victory celebration for Westchester High. It was a 65-55 triumph over Chatsworth that gave the Comets their 16th City Section basketball title before a sold-out crowd of more than 1,800 at L.A. Southwest College.
'This is big. Nobody believed in us,' said Ariza, who finished with 19 points and made key assists in the fourth quarter to help No. 2-seeded Westchester (22-9) to win the Open Division championship over the No. 1-seeded Chancellors (22-8).
The game attracted a large crowd because the game's two standout players were the sons of former NBA players, and each had memorable moments. Alijah Arenas struggled at times with his shot, making only one for eight in the third quarter, when Westchester opened a nine-point lead. He finished with 33 points with Ariza guarding him much of the second half.
'I don't feel I did my best,' Arenas said. 'I felt we could have done better collectively.'
Ariza was four for four on free throws in the fourth quarter when Chatsworth picked up two technicals in the final 1:33, one for hanging on the rim and another for a player losing his cool. Those mistakes blocked any Chatsworth comeback bid.
Ariza, the son of former Westchester, UCLA and NBA standout Trevor Ariza, came to Westchester trying to bring back the Comet magic. His father won four City titles from 2000-2003. Westchester's coach, Dewitt Cotton, was an assistant then. Cotton succeeded Hall of Fame coach Ed Azzam, who won all 15 of the City titles.
It was a Cotton timeout with 6:55 left in the third quarter that proved to be a decisive moment. The score was tied 28-28. He yelled in the huddle for his players to remember to play as a team after several bad shots.
'It was good. It brought us together,' said Jordan Ballard, who scored 15 points.
Westchester went on an 11-1 run.
Westchester lost to Chatsworth in its season opener 59-55, so this was a redemption game for the Comets. Ariza and Arenas have known each other for a long time and their competitiveness was on display.
'It was fun. A great matchup. That's my dog,' Ariza said.
Both schools will be involved in the Southern California Regional playoffs that begin next week. Pairings will be announced Sunday afternoon.

Carl Nassib, NFL's 1st openly gay active player and West Chester native, has jersey added to Smithsonian

The jersey of West Chester native Carl Nassib is now on display at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, honoring his achievement as the first openly gay player to appear in an NFL regular-season game. The Malvern Prep alum made the announcement while appearing on The Pivot Podcast, hosted by former NFL stars Ryan Clark, Fred Taylor and Channing Crowder on May 6. The jersey on display is Nassib's No. 94 Las Vegas Raiders jersey from the team's 2021 season opener against the Baltimore Ravens — the first game he played after publicly coming out as gay in a social media post in June 2021. In that game, he made a critical strip sack on Lamar Jackson in overtime that helped lead the Raiders to a 33-27 victory. The jersey has been on display since May 21. "They reached out to me last year and said they wanted to add it to the collection. I said, absolutely. This is huge," Nassib said on the podcast. "I love museums. I love history. I love football. I love the gays." During the podcast, Nassib credited his late uncle, who was also gay and passed away from cancer, for inspiring him to share his truth. "When I came out to him, he said, 'This is the biggest weight off my chest. I'm not the only one,'" Nassib recalled. "That really charged me. I felt like I had to do this." Nassib walked on to Penn State's football team in 2011 but it wasn't until his last two years at Happy Valley that he started rewriting the Nittany Lions record books. In 2015, he set the Penn State single-season sack record with 15.5 sacks, was named a unanimous All-American, and received both the Lombardi Award and Nagurski-Woodson Award as the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year. Nassib played seven seasons in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders before retiring in 2023. During the podcast, Nassib also shared that he grew up an Eagles fan and is a big Taylor Swift fan.

Prep talk: Regional baseball, softball players begin on Tuesday

It's the final week of the high school sports season, and Southern California regional playoffs in baseball and softball begin on Tuesday. Some schools opted out because players decided to focus on graduations, club teams or summer travel. Advertisement Some coaches are using this week as a way to get young players experience for next season. Others will try for one last week of having their teams together seeking championships on Saturday. "The City Section championship was icing on the cake," El Camino Real coach Josh Lienhard said. "This is something extra." City Section baseball representatives have been off for more than week, allowing them to have an advantage with rested pitchers. That should help Open Division champion El Camino Real, which hosts Point Loma in its Division II opener. Christian Gastelum, who didn't pitch in the City playoffs, will get the start. The Royals have both of their top pitchers, Luke Howe and Devin Gonor, ready to go if needed. With Southern Section Division 2 champion West Ranch not playing, runner-up Mater Dei was moved to Division 1 for the regionals and will play Crespi in an opener Tuesday at Hartunian Field. Division 1 champion St. John Bosco opens at home against St. Augustine as the top seed. Advertisement El Modena is seeded No. 1 in Division 1 softball and won't play until Thursday with only five teams in the bracket. . . . The state championships in golf take place Tuesday at Poppy Hills CC. La Serna and Santa Margarita are competing for a team title.
