Sabah youths to perform with jazz legend Ernie Watts at Sepilok Festival

The Star05-05-2025

KOTA KINABALU: A new music-eco collaboration will see Sabah youths take the stage with Grammy-winning jazz legend Ernie Watts at the upcoming Sepilok Jazz Festival.
The opportunity arises from a partnership between Asian jazz icon Jeremy Monteiro and turtle conservation NGO Friends of Sea Turtles Education and Research, under a three-year Memorandum of Understanding.
Monteiro will serve as artistic adviser and mentor, helping to design the competition format, refine its curriculum, and create pathways for Sabah's young talents to gain exposure at international jazz festivals.
Bakat Sepilok Jazz music director Cheong Kok Ann said Monteiro's involvement marked a pivotal moment for the programme.
"His presence opens the door to global jazz conversations and helps Sabah youths see music in a broader context," said Cheong in a statement.
The 2025 edition recorded its highest participation yet, with over 105 participants across the open and school categories. Preliminary rounds are being held in Kota Kinabalu (May 2) and Sandakan (May 5), with the finals scheduled for Aug 2 at the Trinity Arts and Music Academy in Sandakan.
Winners will get the chance to perform at the fourth edition of the Sepilok Jazz Festival, taking place on Sept 5 and 6 at the Rainforest Discovery Centre in Sepilok — alongside Watts, who has performed with Frank Zappa and The Rolling Stones.
As part of the collaboration, Monteiro and FOSTER are also planning to establish a Sabah Jazz Digital Archive to preserve original compositions and creative journeys from the local music community as a long-term educational resource.
The programme is designed to be inclusive and sustainable, ensuring equal opportunities for youths from diverse backgrounds, including those from rural and interior areas.

Sabrina Carpenter Unveils 'Man's Best Friend' Album Cover; Slammed Over Degrading Image

Last year, US singer Sabrina Carpenter dominated the charts with her hit 'Espresso', widely regarded as the song of the summer. The single, along with her album 'Short n' Sweet', also earned her first Grammy awards in the Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Solo Performance categories. Following the release of her latest single, 'Manchild', which is rumoured to be inspired by her breakup with Irish actor and former boyfriend Barry Keoghan, the artist has officially revealed the artwork and title of her upcoming album, 'Man's Best Friend'. However, the response to the album cover may not have been what she was hoping for. Here's why: Earlier this morning (Thursday, 12th June), Sabrina Carpenter unveiled the official artworks for her seventh studio album, 'Man's Best Friend', which is set to be released on 29th August. The first image shows her in a black dress, kneeling on all fours, with her hair being pulled by a man, posing as though she were his pet. The other photo shows a dog wearing a light blue coloured collar that had the album title on it. Although comments on Instagram have been mostly positive as fans expressed excitement for new music, those on Twitter, however, had different opinions about the album cover. As seen in the screenshots below, many described the artwork as off-putting, criticising it for portraying her, or women in general, as subservient to men, likening the imagery to that of a pet dog. Others accused the singer of objectifying herself for the 'male gaze'. Some fans defended the former Disney star, arguing that the image and album title were intended as irony and satire, highlighting how women are often sexualised and objectified by men. However, while others recognised the underlying message, they felt that the imagery and title might not have been the most effective artistic choices to convey her point. At the time of writing, Sabrina Carpenter has yet to respond to the criticism surrounding her album artwork. Perhaps once the record is released, audiences will have a clearer understanding of the intention behind the imagery she chose. What are your thoughts on the artwork? Miley Cyrus admits she hid thousands of dollars in drugs from accountant

Miley Cyrus is currently riding the wave of her May 30 album release, 'Something Beautiful'. Photo: AP Miley Cyrus is getting candid about her past drug use, including a time when she says she hid tens of thousands of dollars worth of drug purchases from her accountant. The Grammy-winning Flowers singer, 32, confirmed that 'drugs were the biggest cost' of her recording her 2015 self-funded album, Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz . 'To hide those from my accountant, we called them 'vintage clothes,'' she revealed on a recent episode of The Ringer's Every Single Album podcast. 'So she would get these checks for thousands of dollars worth of vintage clothes.' Eventually, her accountant began to wonder where those clothes actually were. 'Every time she saw me, she'd be like, 'Where's that, like, US$15,000 (RM63,537.17) original John Lennon T-shirt that you bought?'' Cyrus recalled. 'I was like, 'Oh, it's upstairs. … We just really want to protect it. It's really delicate.'' Cyrus admitted to buying 'a lot of 'vintage clothes' that year,' saying she's grateful she 'survived' that period of her life. 'I would definitely not encourage anyone else to go this hard, but the fact that I got through it, I'm very glad I got to do it,' she said. The Disney Channel alum has since been vocal about getting sober – first from marijuana in 2017 and then alcohol three years later. She credits sobriety with having 'changed (her) entire life.' Cyrus is currently riding the wave of her May 30 album release, Something Beautiful . This week at the Tribeca Festival, Cyrus debuted the accompanying visual album. – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service

Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein convicted in New York retrial

Harvey Weinstein, former co-chairman of the Weinstein Co., appears at Manhattan criminal court in New York, U.S., on Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Michael Nagle/Pool via REUTERS NEW YORK (Reuters) -A Manhattan jury found Harvey Weinstein guilty on a sex crimes charge on Wednesday in a retrial after a state appeals court last year overturned the former movie mogul's 2020 conviction. Weinstein, once one of the most powerful figures in Hollywood, was accused by prosecutors in the case of raping an aspiring actress and assaulting two other women. Weinstein, 73, pleaded not guilty and has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex. In closing arguments on June 3, the prosecution told the 12 jurors that the evidence showed how Weinstein used his power and influence to trap and abuse women. The defense countered that the accusers lied on the witness stand out of spite after their consensual sexual encounters with the Oscar-winning producer failed to result in Hollywood stardom. Jurors reached their verdict on the fifth day of sometimes fractious deliberations. The retrial began on April 23. Weinstein has had a litany of health problems and attended the retrial in a wheelchair. In the retrial, Weinstein was charged with raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013, assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and assaulting Kaja Sokola in 2002 when she was a 16-year-old aspiring actress. A jury had in February 2020 found Weinstein guilty of raping Mann and sexually assaulting Haley. Sokola's allegation was not part of that case. The conviction was a milestone for the #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful men. But the New York Court of Appeals, the state's highest court, threw out that conviction in April 2024. It said the trial judge erred by letting women testify that Weinstein had assaulted them, though their accusations were not the basis of the criminal charges. Though the 2020 conviction was thrown out, Weinstein has remained behind bars because of his 2022 rape conviction in California, which resulted in a 16-year prison sentence. He is appealing that verdict. More than 100 women, including famous actresses, have accused Weinstein of misconduct. The retrial was handled by prosecutors with the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. They portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who promised career advancement in Hollywood to women, only to then coax them into private settings where he attacked them. The defense rejected that characterization, saying Weinstein engaged in "mutually beneficial" relationships with his accusers, who ended up with auditions and other show business opportunities. Weinstein co-founded the Miramax studio, whose hit movies included "Shakespeare in Love" and "Pulp Fiction." His own eponymous film studio filed for bankruptcy in March 2018, five months after sexual misconduct accusations against him became widely publicized. Weinstein has experienced several health episodes while being held at New York City's Rikers Island jail, and in September was rushed to a hospital for emergency heart surgery.
