Ireland's top drifters to go head-to-head on Spike Island
Local ace and professional drifter Conor Shanahan (from Killavullen) and World Rally star Josh McErlean will perform demonstration drives in their respective Toyota GT86 and M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1 cars.
The duo, along with Conor's brother Jack are part of a one and three quarter hour show that features the Red Bull Drift Pursuit when sixteen of the country's top drifters go head-to-head (knockout format) at the former military base and prison.
The evening of exhilarating and thrilling motorsport event has a Cork versus Kerry battle when Trevor Healy (Cork) takes on Colin O'Sullivan (Kerry) in the first round of sixteen.
Drivers will be judged on two key criteria - course time and clipping points, with penalties for any infringements. Each of the head to head contests is about accuracy, control and speed.
The presence of the Shanahan's brothers should be a great spectacle as they are world renowned for showcasing their unique skills. McErlean, along with his Killeagh co-driver Eoin Treacy, is showing good form in their maiden WRC Rally1 season.
Speaking ahead of the event, Killavullen native Shanahan said: 'As a proud Corkman, it is incredible to see a drift event like this take place at such an iconic location like Spike Island. Some of the best drifters in Ireland will be competing and I know Jack and I are looking forward to putting on a show.'
McErlean said. "It's (Spike Island) one of the most iconic locations in the country, so to bring the energy of a Red Bull drift event here is something seriously special. Driving the M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1 car in a place like this, it's going to be loud, fast and an unforgettable experience.'
The event will roar into action at 6.45pm and is scheduled to finish at 8.30pm. Tickets are currently on sale on the Red Bull website, priced at €45 for a standing ticket and €55 for a seated ticket. Ferry transfers from Ringaskiddy or Cobh are included in the ticket, with ferries running throughout the day.
Prior to the competition itself, spectators can avail of Spike Island tours to learn more about the island's history as a monastic settlement and its 18th-century bastion fort (Fort Mitchel).
It's strategic location within the Cork Harbour meant it was used for defence, a naval base and more recently, a prison.
During the evening the Shanahan brothers and McErlean will partake in a Q&A session while the drivers' paddock will be open to spectators keen to get a closer look at the action.
The other Cork drivers that will participate in the Red Bull Drift Pursuit are Alan Hynes, the 2024 Red Bull Drift Pursuit champion, Aidan Dennehy and Owen Magner.

John Cleary to remain on as Cork senior football boss for two more years
John Cleary has been handed a two-year extension to remain on as manager of the Cork senior footballers. A county committee meeting on Tuesday night rubberstamped Cleary's continued involvement after his term of three years at the helm ended with the Rebels' defeat to Dublin in the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final on 21 June. The Castlehaven clubman took over Cork on an initial basis from Keith Ricken in 2022 before assuming the role full-time. He went on to guide the county to All-Ireland quarter-final appearances against Dublin and Derry respectively. In 2024, Cork fell to Louth at the preliminary quarter-final stage and an exit at the same juncture was the case this year despite leading the Dubs at the break. Cleary will no doubt be keen to engineer Cork's promotion from Division 2 in 2026, all before a Munster Championship campaign where themselves and Kerry will be on opposites sides of the draw. The decision to keep the counties apart came after the Munster Council accepted a proposal that the top two teams from the province in the previous year's Allianz Football League be seeded. Kerry were crowned Division 1 champions back in March with Cork finishing fifth in Division 2. Clare, third in Division 3, were next best placed.

Confirmed: John Cleary staying on as Cork senior football boss
John Cleary has received a new two-year term as Cork senior football manager. The Castlehaven man was ratified for another couple of seasons at Tuesday's county board meeting. Cleary took over Cork on an interim basis in 2022 and has been in the permanent position for the last three seasons. Cleary's management team will be proposed for ratification at September's county board meeting. His backroom team for the past three seasons has comprised of coach Kevin Walsh, selectors Micheál Ó Croinín, James Loughrey and Barry Corkery, as well as performance coach Rob Heffernan. For the second year in a row, Cork bowed out at the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final stages when they lost to Dublin. They defeated Roscommon to make the knock-out stages, having beaten Donegal in the 2024 group phase before exiting the championship at the hands of Louth.

That three-year term ended following Cork's All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final defeat to Dublin in June, but Clearly was handed a fresh two-year spell at Tuesday night's county board meeting. Meanwhile, Declan Darcy has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Dessie Farrell as Dublin senior football manager. READ MORE Darcy, who was a key member of Jim Gavin's backroom team from 2013-2019, is understood to be the preferred candidate of several leading players within the senior squad. Former Dublin defender Jonny Cooper could be part of Darcy's management team. Ger Brennan was the early favourite to replace Farrell and at least one of the country's largest bookmakers suspended betting last month on the St Vincent's clubman taking the reins of his native county. Brennan this summer managed Louth to a first Leinster SFC triumph in 68 years but surprisingly stepped down as Wee County boss after their championship campaign ended. His decision to step away was announced just three days after Farrell resigned from as Dublin senior football boss. Brennan has also been linked with the managerial vacancy in Roscommon.
