Bob Carter steps away from high performance role with NZ Cricket

Photo: PHOTOSPORT After more than 20 years involvement with New Zealand Cricket's top teams coach Bob Carter is stepping away from the sport's high performance programme. Carter became the Black Caps assistant coach during John Bracewell's tenure as head coach in 2004, serving in that role until 2009. He was also assistant coach under Mike Hesson between 2012-2014 and the White Ferns head coach ahead of, and during, the 2022 Women's Cricket World Cup in New Zealand. Formerly a player and then director of cricket for English county Northamptonshire, Carter also coached Canterbury and Wellington men's provincial sides. Carter said after two decades based out of New Zealand Cricket's high performance unit at Lincoln in Christchurch it was time for a change, and he was looking forward to continuing his work in cricket as an independent contractor. "I feel like I've lived the dream," he said, reflecting on the teams and players he'd worked with over the past twenty years. "We've been able to create sides that have been greater than their sum of parts, and that's a key ingredient in team sport. "Sure, the individual performance is important, but it's the collective that has the greater potential," he said. "That's where the magic is." He regarded NZC's domestic competitions as the equal of anything else in the world. "Our domestic cricket is very strong. I'm not sure that's widely recognised. The reason the Black Caps have continued to produce great batters and bowlers is because we have a strong, underlying domestic system. Forest run bringing tourists to Rotorua

A popular run alongside geysers and Rotorua's redwood forest is all set to take off this weekend. Last year 'Run the Forest' drew more than 3000 runners, with more than 90 per cent of them coming from out of town. This year, it has more than 4000 runners and sold out a month ago. The event has multiple runs up to the half-marathon distance - including a 10km 'Geothermal Traverse' and a 7km 'Redwoods Trail'. Debbie Robertson, general manager at Wai Ariki Hot Springs, the sponsors of the event, and organiser Mike Cockin speak to Susie about the weekend's big event for Rotorua. Pasifika Sipoti in brief for 8 August

Tonga are targeting a top four finish in Montevideo. Photo: World Rugby The Tonga Rugby Union (TRU) might be forced to disband their international sevens program because of the lack of financial backing. The ABC reports TRU chief executive Aisea Aholelei will take the issue to the union's next board meeting, later this year. Aholelei said a severe funding crisis and a lack of direct support from the world governing body could see the union drop the abbreviated code altogether. He claimed constant changes to the competition format worked against the union. Eight players with Pasifika heritage have been named in the Australian Wallaroos squad for the women's Rugby World Cup in England. Five will be making their first World Cup appearances, including Fijian heritage player Tabua Tuinakauvadra. Others include Tongan heritage players Faliki Pohiva and Faitala Moleka, plus Samoan heritage players Lydia Kavoa and Katalina Amosa. Australia will open their World Cup campaign against Manusina Samoa on 23 August. Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Qatar Rugby Federation in a move that will enhance sports collaboration between the two rugby nations. FRU board chairman John Sanday said the agreement, which came into effect in June, will run for three years, with an option to extend. It covers player exchanges, coaching programmes, joint training camps, and commercial opportunities to elevate rugby in both nations. Under the memorandum, the two federations have agreed to exchange officials and organise international friendly matches. Fiji Bulikula women's rugby league coach Josaia Rabele has been in Australia meeting with players and finalising his squad for the upcoming Women's Rugby League World Series. The series is the qualifier for the Women's Rugby League World Cup 2026. One spot is up for grabs, among hosts Canada, from the Americas zone, Fiji (Asia-Pacific), Ireland (Europe) and Nigeria (Middle East & Africa). The event will kick off on 21 October, with Canada taking on Fiji, while Ireland will meet Nigeria, and the winners then play off for the World Cup spot. PNG Hunters head coach Paul Aiton has made two changes to his lineup that will play in Sunday's match against the visiting Western Clydesdales in the Hostplus Cup. The National reported Sanny Wabo returns at fullback, with prop Manisa Kai named on the bench. The Hunters hold eighth spot on the ladder.
