ICC chief Jay Shah announces increased winner's purse for WTC 2023-25 cycle

The stage for the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25 cycle is all set, with England's iconic Lord's stadium hosting the much-awaited match between defending champions Australia and South Africa from June 11 to 15. On Thursday, May 16—just under a month before the final is scheduled to take place—ICC chairman Jay Shah took to Twitter to announce the prize money set to be received by the winners and runners-up of the event.
According to Shah's announcement, whoever wins the WTC 2025 final between Australia and South Africa will walk away with a whopping $3.6 million, while the runners-up will win $2.1 million. The new prize money is significantly higher than what was awarded in 2021 and 2023, when winners received $1.6 million and the runners-up won $800,000.

South Africa Name Playing XI For WTC Final 2025 Against Australia: Ryan Rickelton To Open, Wiaan Mulder To Bat At...

South Africa on Tuesday announced a strong Playing XI for the much anticipated World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia, starting on Wednesday, June 11 at the Lord's Cricket Ground. Captain Temba Bavuma will lead a well-rounded South Africa lineup that has multiple options in all departments of the game. Headlining the batting order is Ryan Rickelton, who has been South Africa's top-scorer in the WTC 2023-25 cycle, alongside Bavuma - not too far behind in the scoring charts, Aiden Markram, and Tristan Stubbs. Interestingly, the first-time WTC finalists South Africa have decided to stick with Wiaan Mulder at No.3 after he was used at that position during recent Tests against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. "Mulder is quite young in that position. But I think having played with Mulder, having seen him and the way he has grown in the last two years within the red-ball format," Bavuma said. "It's about giving him a lot more confidence, keep backing him and just allowing him to do what he does best. He has an opportunity in a pressure situation, but I think he can take comfort from the fact that the guys are backing him. We just want him to play his game," he added. While Keshav Maharaj is the solitary full-time spinner, the bowling lineup also features Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen alongside Lungi Ngidi. The South Africa captain explained the reasoning behind picking Ngidi over Dane Paterson, "Probably one of the tougher decisions that has been made. We see what Dane Paterson did for us to the end of last season. But it was more from a tactical point of view. Probably a little bit more pace from Lungi, guess he's a bit taller as well," Bavuma said. "Lungi also has a better record, not taking away anything from Patto. He (Ngidi) has the experience, he's played here before, not that Patto hasn't. But I think he (Ngidi) will complement that bowling attack a little more. We have a guy like Mulder, who can give us something similar like Patto. It was probably one of the difficult decision we had to make," he added. South Africa Playing XI: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma (c), Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi

Final frontier: South Africa up against Australia

Indeed. It has always been the case when it comes to finals. India had a dominating run to two WTC finals and an ODI World Cup, but none of it mattered in the summit clashes. Australia had a tough road to two of the aforementioned three finals and won both. In saying that, it is hard to ignore the larger picture and what it would mean to South Africa, who not long ago, had sent a second-rung Test team to New Zealand so that the top players could play in the SA20 league. It is also hard not to look at Bavuma and what it would mean for cricket in the rainbow nation to see their first black African batter and captain lead them to global gold. He has, in fact, led them from the front. Bavuma captained SA in seven games this cycle and they won six and drew the other. He has faced more balls than any other Proteas batter and only David Bendingham has scored more runs. However, he cannot do it alone. He will need Aiden Markram, Tristan Stubbs and the rest of the batting line-up to rally around and rise to the occasion. Even more considering the well-settled bowling attack led by Kagiso Rabada. "They have a very good bowling attack and the likes of Rabada, Marco Jansen and Keshav Maharaj as well, a very crafty spinner. The batting also coming together nicely with Markram there and Stubbs and Bavuma who I believe really stands tall in this particular format when leading the team. So, all those factors are quite important," JioStar expert Sanjay Bangar said on the eve of the final. They will be up against a team and a captain who has been there before and done it. Pat Cummins is not just among the best bowlers of his generation but also among the greatest captains of his generation. He is leading a generational bowling attack alongside Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazlewood and has the support of another generational batter in Steve Smith. Not to forget Travis Head, who was the star in both the finals. In many ways, a win here would be the perfect peak for a generation of stars who helped Australia dominate in the past decade. The next-gen is already breaking into the team and not many of the current line-up might be there till the end of the next cycle.

WTC final: Pat Cummins won't be surprised if English fans support South Africa

Australia captain Pat Cummins has said he is not expecting a fully partisan crowd at Lord's when his side takes on South Africa in the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), starting Wednesday, 11 June. Speaking on the eve of the match in London, Cummins acknowledged that some English fans might support South Africa, given the fierce nature of recent contests between England and match marks Australia's return to England for a Test match for the first time since the intense 2023 Ashes series. During the second Test of that series at Lord's, Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey was at the centre of controversy after the stumping of England's Jonny Bairstow, an incident that drew sharp criticism from English fans. Carey was subsequently booed in the remaining Tests, with Australia facing a hostile atmosphere for the rest of the Australia have not enjoyed significant support in England due to the historic Ashes rivalry. However, Cummins noted the strong presence of travelling Australian fans in London. "Probably, yeah, hard to know [if neutrals will support South Africa]. There's a lot of Aussies here in London, so I'm sure there'll be lots of Aussies out there, lots of South African fans as well. And yeah, wouldn't be surprised if the English have a few supporting South Africa as well. But yeah, we'll wait and see," Cummins said at the pre-match press TO BE BACK AT LORD'S: CUMMINSadvertisementThe Australian captain joked about enjoying the calm at Lord's while the stadium remained empty, and highlighted his team's strong record at the 2010, Australia have won three Tests at Lord's and lost just one. That includes the controversial 2023 Ashes Test, which Australia won by 43 runs under Cummins' batter Steve Smith is expected to play a key role in the final, given his prolific record at the iconic ground. Smith has scored 525 runs in five matches at Lord's, including two centuries and two fifties.'Yeah, great few days. Maybe there's no crowds – that helps – but it's always good to be back here,' Cummins said with a smile.'It's such an iconic ground and we do enjoy playing over here. Someone like Smithy has scored a lot of runs here – over the past three or four Ashes series and Test matches. I think we've either won or come close to winning every Test. So yeah, it's a place we like playing at. Even in white-ball cricket, we've had some success here as well,' he confirmed their playing XI on Tuesday, naming Marnus Labuschagne as a makeshift opener alongside Usman Khawaja. All-rounder Cameron Green returns to the line-up, while pacer Josh Hazlewood has been selected ahead of Scott Boland to complete the pace trio. You May Also Like
