Teen hit woman seconds after inhaling 'hippy crack' at wheel of her Fiat 500
A teenager who ran over a pedestrian just seconds after she inhaled nitrous oxide from a balloon at the wheel has been detained for 20 months.
CCTV footage captured Louisa Tunstall, 19, huffing on gold balloons full of 'hippy crack' while driving her Fiat 500 in Wigan, Greater Manchester.
Moments later the car veered onto the pavement and hit teaching assistant Tracey Holman, 50, who was out on her regular evening walk.
She was left severely injured in the impact with multiple fractures and injuries to her left leg, foot and ankle.
Almost a year on the keen netball player is still undergoing treatment for her injuries and says she is a 'prisoner in her own home' as she has to sleep in a downstairs room.
At Bolton Crown Court, Tunstall wept in the dock as she was ordered to be locked up in a Young Offender Institute for 20 months.
She admitted causing serious injury by dangerous driving, possession of class C drug nitrous oxide and driving while unfit through drugs.
The incident occurred at 7pm on May 24 last year after Tunstall had been out with friends.
Alex Beevers, prosecuting, said: 'This is a case where ultimately the mere act of consuming nitrous oxide behind the wheel is obviously an inherently dangerous thing to do.
'It is staggeringly dangerous driving.
'Mrs Holman was out walking as she does every evening when she was suddenly and forcefully struck from behind.
'On the floor she noted blood dripping down her left leg and saw a white car on its side and said it did not feel real.
'The incident was witnessed in part by another woman, who was idling in her vehicle when she saw a Fiat 500 occupied by two females with the car appearing to be traveling in excess of the 30mph speed limit.
'The driver was inhaling from a gold balloon. After the car crashed, she saw the same golden balloon deflated lying on the pavement.'
The prosecutor added: 'Police attended, and the defendant said had been to purchase nitrous oxide for future use. She momentarily took her eyes off the road to retrieve something from the footwell.
'Officers recovered two large cylindrical canisters from the vehicle which were sent away for forensic assessment.
'Though the presence of nitrous oxide cannot be formally tested in the blood one of the significant aspects of the investigation was that one of the canisters weighed much less.
'The weight of both canisters should be 2kg but one of the canisters was 1.6kg which suggested that one of them had been used and discharged.
'There was also a nozzle inserted in the top of one of the canisters indicative of some use.
'CCTV showed both the defendant and the passenger with two fully inflated gold balloons in their mouths moments before what occurred.'
In a victim impact statement, Mrs Holman said: 'I would like to say that this incident has had a significant impact on not only my life but my family's life.
'As I cannot get upstairs, I need someone to be with me all of the time and my daughter has become my full-time carer which isn't fair on her as she is currently studying at university.
'When I think about the actions of the driver, I feel like she has turned my world upside down.
'I have missed so much in my life, and I feel that she can just go about her business as normal with no understanding of the consequences for her actions.'
Judge Abigail Hudson told Tunstall: 'Taking nitrous oxide with a balloon whilst driving a car is inherently dangerous. More Trending
'It must be entirely obvious to you that doing that would put everyone around you at risk. Yet you deliberately ignored the rules of the road and had a total disregard for the risk of danger to others.
'The result of your selfishness has been disastrous for Mrs Holman,
'You are a very young woman and while your presence here is absolutely tragic, you caused damage to Mrs Holman and her family.
'The message must be sent to the public that those who inhale nitrous oxide while driving will go to prison.'

Acid attacker who blinded dad brags about his crimes in rap videos from prison

Paul Laskey, 43, was squirted in the face with what was believed to be battery acid after his 16-year-old son was mugged at knifepoint. Robbie Scott, 22, was jailed for the attack but has begun posting music videos from behind bars glorifying violence. The TikTok clips are posted under 'HMP hardest rapper Robdog' and are geographically tagged to 'HMP Manchester (Strangeways)'. In one soundbite, Scott raps: 'I used to roll on the streets with a kitchen knife, would not think twice about dipping guys.' In video he can be seen chanting: 'Robdog jailhouse settings, you know how we do, Geordie boys on coke, oh yes.' Scott violent attack unfolded after he used a zombie knife to steal an £1,000 gold chain from Laskey's son in Newcastle on February 5 2023. The dad went to apprehend Scott when he was squirted in the face with a corrosive acid, causing his left eye to 'melt' away. Reacting to the rap videos, Laskey told Metro: 'It's a disgrace he is able to brag about things he does and has no remorse whatsoever.' The plumber and heating engineer previously recalled how the acid burned his face and destroyed his vision in one eye. He said: 'I couldn't see and couldn't breathe. It took my breathe away with how strong it was. I felt burning on my face. 'It was horrendous. I was off work for the first six months. It was all that was on my mind. It was just awful.' Scott was sent to prison for eight years and six months in May last year after admitting GBH with intent, robbery, having a knife and a corrosive substance in public and resisting arrest. However his sentence was raised to 11 years after it was judged to be unduly lenient. Asked about what Scott's rap videos said about the criminal, Laskey said: 'It just shows the sort of person he is, and when his sentence is over he will probably do it again.' Woman 'threatened with rape and dragged to basement by police' in Serbia protest

Protests by students, teachers, workers and government opposition began last December after 16 people were killed on November 1 when the canopy of the main railway station in Novi Sad collapsed on them. The tragedy was viewed as a consequence of deep-rooted corruption and institutional failure in the Balkan nation, leading to calls for early elections. Since then, the persistent dissent has escalated into the most severe crisis since the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and Aleksandar Vučić came into power. As pressure mounts, Vučić – an authoritarian leader famous in the Balkans for his ties to Vladimir Putin – unleashed his loyalists and riot police on the streets to clash with the protesters. As many as 100 people have been detained over the past week, with many sharing their experiences of abuse of power. Nikolina Sindjelic, a student activist, told AFP she was threatened with rape while in custody. She accused Marko Krichak, the commander of the Unit for the Security of Certain Persons and Facilities (JZO), of sexually and physically abusing her. Sindjelic recalled being dragged along with another student and several other protesters into a government garage in central Belgrade by officers in a special police unit on Thursday night. The 22-year-old said: 'The commander of the unit brutally beat both him and me. 'He called us offensive names, told me I was a w***e and that he would rape me there in front of everyone, that I would regret trying to overthrow the state.' Her story was confirmed by several students who were also detained at the same time. The Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs 'strongly denied' the allegations. It said the student was arrested for being part of a group that had attacked government buildings and police. A statement said: 'Throughout the entire procedure, no means of coercion, handcuffing, insults, or any form of mistreatment were applied.' Sindjelic, who was released with a misdemeanour charge, said she intends to sue over her alleged abuse. Hundreds gathered in front of the accused commander's police building in Belgrade on Tuesday in support of the woman. Protesters carried banners reading, 'Rapists with badges' and 'The system beats us, we defend ourselves'. Andrej Sevo, a 31-year-old protester, said: 'We are now entering a spiral of violence, and I do not see how it can end well if things continue in this way. 'They must decide how to act and calm the situation, rather than simply pouring fuel on the fire by sending in the police, with ever more brutal behaviour.' Aleksandra Krstic, 45, also at the rally, stressed that women are especially vulnerable to police abuse. The political science professor said: 'We have no one to protect us. 'If I go to a protest, I should be able to turn to the police… not be beaten, dragged into some basement of a government building, threatened with rape, and forced to beg them to stop.' Rallies have been held in Belgrade, Valjevo, Novi Sad, Zrenjanin, Prijepolje, Niš, Kragujevac, and other, smaller places across the country, with people gathering in large numbers. On Monday night, Vučić's SNS office in Valjevo had its windows smashed by a passing crowd. Within an hour, the leader stood in front of the shattered glass, flanked by pro-government media and security, to denounce the demonstrators as 'terrorists' – a familiar refrain for him. The 55-year-old warned that 'soon, the citizens will be freed from this terror and evil.' In Valjevo, thousands of people clashed with riot police, pelting them with rocks and glass bottles. Family's note pleading for return of dad and three children missing for four yea
The mum and sister of a New Zealand man who kidnapped his three children and has been a fugitive in the wilderness ever since have begged him to come home. Four years ago, Tom Phillips took his children, Ember, nine, Maverick, 10, and Jayda, 12, from their home after losing a custody battle with his former partner. The children's mother, Catherine, previously said she thought her daughter tried to get a message out to the public during a previous sighting of the four. Until now, Tom's family have remained quiet on the matter. This week, his sister Rozzi and mum Julia spoke out for the first time. In a handwritten letter to her son, mum Julia wrote: 'Tom – I feel really sad that you thought you had to do this. Not considering how much we love you and can support you. 'It hurts every time I see photos of the children and of you and see some of your stuff that is still here. Jayda, Maverick, Ember – I love you so much and really miss being part of your lives.' Rozzi told Stuff: 'Every day I wake up and hope that today will be the day that you all come home. There's a lot of love and there's a lot of support, and we're ready to help you walk through what you need to walk through.' Police think Tom and his children have been hiding off-grid in the rural Waikato region, and have offered a £37,000 reward for anyone who has information on them. It's believed Tom has gotten help from other people to remain undetected for this long. The children were last spotted in February this year, by State Highway 4, south of Te Kūiti. Catherine previously expressed her worry that her children are in danger, slamming Philips for 'child endangerment'. Tom failed to appear in court in January 2022 for a charge of causing wasteful deployment of police personnel and resources. He is also wanted over an alleged armed robbery of a bank in Te Kuiti in September 2023. Last year, mum Catherine said in an emotional video: 'They are just innocent children, they do not deserve to be treated this way. They do not deserve the life that is being provided to them right now.'
