Sporting Lisbon's Viktor Gyokeres faces disciplinary action for training no-show

Glasgow Times7 days ago
The Portuguese club warned Gyokeres' no-show will make the striker's possible departure to Arsenal 'more complicated'.
Gyokeres, who scored 39 league goals to fire Sporting to the Portuguese title last season, is understood to be at the top of Arsenal's wishlist.

However, the two clubs are yet to agree a transfer fee and the 27-year-old has appeared to play his hand by refusing to return for pre-season training.
However, Sporting president Frederico Varandas told Portuguese news agency LUSA, 'We're calm. Everything can be solved with the closure of the market, a hefty fine and an apology to the group.
'If they don't want to pay Viktor's fair market value, we'll be very comfortable with that for the next three years.
'If the geniuses who are devising this strategy think that this puts pressure on me to make it easier for him to leave, not only are they completely wrong, but they are also making it more complicated for the player to leave.
'No one is above the interests of the club. Whoever they are.'
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is keen to bring in a new striker before the club's pre-season tour of Singapore and Hong Kong, with Arsenal due to play their first match, against AC Milan, on July 23.
Denmark midfielder Christian Norgaard has been brought in from Brentford, along with Spain international Martin Zubimendi and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, who joined from Chelsea.
Arsenal are also closing in on a £52million deal for Chelsea's England forward Noni Madueke.

Russell Martin must be Rangers history maker in his first game in charge as one thing is clear about Ibrox

It's a tough start to competitive life at Ibrox for Martin but Kirk Broadfoot insists he simply must deliver a win on Tuesday or the Champions League dream will be as good as over. Kirk Broadfoot reckons Russell Martin will have to make Scottish football history in his first game as Rangers boss if his side are to keep their Champions League dream alive. ‌ Panathinaikos visit Ibrox on Tuesday night for the first leg of the second qualifying round tie - and they have never lost to a Scottish team in seven previous encounters. ‌ But Broadfoot believes to have any chance of getting through the qualifier Martin's new-look outfit must hit the ground running and beat Rui Vitoria's Greeks in Govan ahead of the return leg in Athens eight days later. ‌ Three previous meetings between the teams have ended in draws while Panathinaikos won at Ibrox in 2003. They've also dumped Aberdeen in 2007 and Motherwell home and away in 2012. The winners over the next 10 days will still face two more rounds of qualifying to hit the £40m 'league phase' jackpot. And former Ibrox defender Broadfoot, who was part of the Gers side that drew home and away in the last meeting with Pana in 2008, said: 'I think it's a 50-50 if I'm being honest. Tuesday's game at Ibrox is going to be massive. If Rangers can come away with a result at Ibrox - maybe a 1-0 or 2-0 win - then I'd fancy them. ‌ 'But I think they need to be leading when they go to Athens. If they're going over there level, I think it's going to be hard. Especially as it's going to be a new defence. They'll have no time to click. The manager has a style he likes to play but will he go with it in Athens? 'Unfortunately the fans don't care about that. They just want results and they will be judged on this game even though it is really early.' Martin is adamant his side, which could include up to seven new signings, will be ready for the test that awaits them on Tuesday evening. Broadfoot hopes the former Scotland defender is right. ‌ But he also knows the shock that lies in wait for the light blues new boys when they first encounter the wait of expectation on their shoulders. He said: 'I think unless you're Scottish and you know what it's about.. even then it takes time to adjust. 'Even me being a Rangers fan, signing with Rangers, I didn't know what was happening with the pressures and how drawing a game was the end of the world. ‌ 'I wasn't used to that. These guys will never feel anything like this at any other club. They need to learn fast that nothing but winning at Rangers counts. It's the same at Celtic. 'Sometimes guys just can't adapt and that's the problem and the pressure that comes with it. 'Unfortunately you don't get a year to settle in. You've got to hit the ground running or they'll make their mind up and then they're on you. 'Guys like James Tavernier will be trying to get that through to them. I was lucky when I went. There was big characters like Barry Ferguson and David Weir, then we signed guys like Lee McCulloch and Kris Boyd who I travelled with. 'All these guys helped you along and they brought a good core in. The Scottish boys, Kevin Thompson, Steven Whittaker, Stephen Naismith, who all knew what it was about. 'I was lucky to get into a squad like that. The mentality was second to none.'

Man Utd star's damning response to Rasmus Hojlund X-rated dig in Leeds friendly

Manchester United drew a familiar blank in attack against Leeds in Stockholm on Saturday - and there were potentially worrying signs for Ruben Amorim as he attempts to turn things around Rasmus Hojlund showed his disgust after Diogo Dalot failed to find him with a pass in Manchester United 's friendly against Leeds on Saturday. United drew 0-0 with the newly-promoted Premier League side in Stockholm in a drab start to their pre-season campaign. ‌ Ruben Amorim gave an unofficial debut to £62.5million signing Matheus Cunha, who was one of the only positive takeaways from the match. Otherwise it followed a familiar theme for the club, who finished a lowly 15th last season and are expected to improve in 2025/26. ‌ Hojlund managed 10 goals in 52 appearances for United last season, only four of which came in the league, and he often cut a frustrated figure up front. That continued on Saturday in the Swedish capital – and the Danish striker wasn't shy in letting his team-mates know. ‌ Hojlund was looking for Dalot to pass the ball in behind the Leeds defence, but it came later than he wanted it, meaning he was likely offside. "F*** sake," he yelled in Dalot's direction. The Portuguese full-back wasn't interested in hearing his moans and simply ignored him and jogged on. The lack of a link-up between the two United players was evident later in the game too. Dalot did find Hojlund with a cross, only for his header to be deflected, while the young striker was shouting at Dalot again later on after he opted to pass to Patrick Dorgu instead of him. This is a make or break pre-season for Amorim, but he clearly isn't concerned about the atmosphere around the squad, who are missing Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony, Tyrell Malacia and Alejandro Garnacho, who have been banished. ‌ "The environment is really good, of course sometimes we are going to struggle, but what I felt in the first moment is that if we are going to struggle, we will struggle together," Amorim told MUTV post-match. "That is the beginning of everything, then we have to put the quality. This club is not just about the effort, it's about the quality, we have to win games." ‌ He added: "We need to create that bond between everybody [on the United States tour] - not just between the players but the staff. All the changes are stopping. We need to leave that as a group. We have a lot to improve, the speed of the game, all of the details. We need to improve." Amorim was clear on what the main problem was. "We have a lack of pace,' he said. 'Especially in the middle of the park, you can feel it's hard to bring the ball. We created chances. We have a lot to do but it was a first test against a Premier League team with two different teams, a good test. "Matheus Cunha showed what we need, a player in between the lines who is really aggressive. We watched that during last season for a different team. We expect the same thing. "You can see the connection with him and Bruno Fernandes is still not there. But it will be a good connection, because you can put a player like Kobbie Mainoo or Mason Mount there. We need to increase our quality in the final third." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football. Wharton forced his way into England's Euro 2024 squad after joining Palace but was frustrated by injuries last season, missing three months after a groin operation in November. Palace do not want to lose Wharton now as they face Marc Guehi and Eberechi Eze being sold before the window shuts on September 1. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are also admirers but Wharton has not played often enough this season to make their interest concrete. The meteoric rise of England star Adam Wharton Bayern's manager Vincent Kompany wants to reunite Eze with former teammate Michael Olise, as he plots an all-out assault on the Champions League.
