Minister slams forest dept over 'lack of support'
Kailash Vijayvargiya, a senior cabinet ministers of Madhya Pradesh, has publicly expressed unhappiness with the forest department. Addressing an event in Indore (graced by CM Mohan Yadav) recently, the local MLA and the state's urban development and housing minister, Vijayvargiya said the forest department wasn't cooperating with them in supplying saplings for the ambitious tree plantation exercise in Indore. 'We've planted seven lakh trees so far, and our target is to plant 51 lakh trees, but we're not receiving the expected support from the forest department. I request the CM to give proper instructions to the department before going abroad.'
Protest outside BJP office over Sihora dist
Residents of Sihora town recently staged a protest reiterating their long-standing demand for the establishment of a separate district, carved out from Jabalpur. The protest was held outside the ruling BJP divisional office in Sihora, with the people carrying placards that read, 'Who are Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Uma Bharti, Late Babulal Gaur and Smriti Irani?' Amid the sounds of conch, bells and cymbals, the protestors recounted that prominent BJP leaders, including the three former chief ministers of MP and an ex-union minister, had promised to create Sihora a new district. However, these promises remain unfulfilled.

The Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Assembly witnessed ugly scenes after the supporters of a BJP MLA and NCP (Shandrachandra Pawar) legislator clashed. The incident, sources said, was triggered when BJP MLA Gopichand Padalkar's vehicle allegedly came to a halt where NCP(SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad was standing, leading to a heated verbal exchange between the two leaders. Videos of the incident that surfaced on social media on Friday purportedly show Awhad referring to Padalkar as a 'mangalsutra thief', in an apparent reference to a past video that showed the BJP MLA being involved in a commotion at a wedding. Though Padalkar reacted strongly to Awhad, the matter seemed to have been resolved. However, soon afterwards, the tensions continued after supporters of the two leaders exchanged blows on the Assembly premises, forcing Speaker Rahul Narwekar to intervene and temporarily suspend visitors from entering the premises. He also referred the matter to the Privileges Committee. Though the leaders expressed regret on the floor of the House, the incident put the spotlight on the long-simmering rivalry between the two who represent vastly different constituencies, ideologies, and political styles. Though both leaders hail from the OBC communities, they represent different wings of Maharashtra politics. Padalkar is the BJP's rural spearhead against the old Maratha establishment, while Awhad is the urban secularist from the Pawar school of politics. One relies on street mobilisation and caste pride, the other on ideological confrontation and community outreach. A first-time MLA from the Jat Assembly seat in Sangli district, 43-year-old Padalkar is one of the most vocal representatives of the Dhangar (shepherd) community. Born into an OBC Dhangar family with modest means, Padalkar began his political career with the Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP), a party with a strong influence among the Dhangar community that has been pushing for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Padalkar's political journey has been chequered. While he served as a BJP-nominated MLC from 2020 to 2024, he lost several Assembly polls before eventually emerging victorious from the Jat Assembly seat in last year's elections. Known for his rustic oratory and flair for dramatic speeches, Padalkar briefly aligned with Prakash Ambedkar's Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) in 2019 before returning to the BJP the same year. There, he emerged as a combative OBC voice to take on the Maratha-dominated NCP and Pawar. Over the years, Padalkar has cultivated a strong rural OBC voter base and has emerged as one of the staunchest critics of NCP patriarch Sharad Pawar and in 2020, infamously referred to him as 'virus' while opposing his presence at public events related to the Dhangar community. Outside politics, Padalkar produced and starred in a Marathi film, Dhumas (2019), which seemingly added to his popular image in rural Maharashtra. A four-time MLA from the Mumbra-Kalwa seat in Thane, 61-year-old Awhad began his political career as a student activist in the 1980s and was a prominent voice in the anti-fee hike agitations. He steadily rose through the ranks of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the Congress's student body, and served as an MLC between 2002 and 2008. Awhad made his successful electoral debut in 2009 from the Mumbra-Kalwa Assembly seat and has retained the seat since then. He was a minister in the Congress-undivided NCP as well as the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) governments, where he held key portfolios like Housing, Medical Education, Minority Development and Aukaf. A PhD in socio-religious movements, Awhad is from the OBC Vanjari community and is known for his articulate, ideological approach and staunch opposition to right-wing politics. In 2018, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) uncovered an alleged plot by extremists to target him, a claim he used to shore up his political positioning. Awhad's combative personality has often landed him in soup. In 2020, he was booked for assaulting a civil engineer in Thane over a morphed meme. Two years later, a complaint was registered against the MLA after he protested against the Marathi film Har Har Mahadev and assaulted a man at a multiplex in Thane, alleging it distorted Maratha history. In the Assembly, Awhad is known for his sharp interventions and sarcastic wit, which he often uses to target BJP leaders. Last week, Awhad landed in a row after he was seen assaulting a TV journalist inside the Assembly premises. 'Video footage of this incident clearly shows Awhad physically assaulted the reporter, who was recording his interaction with Shiv Sena (UBT) Leader Ambadas Danve. Such behaviour by an elected representative is absolutely unacceptable and raises serious concerns about the safety and security of journalists covering the Assembly session,' the Mumbai Press Club said in a statement following the incident. Despite the controversies, he continues to remain a trusted lieutenant of Pawar and one of the party's most visible urban leaders. He was recently appointed as spokesperson of the NCP (SP) and has also served as the party's floor leader in the Assembly.

Karnataka Revenue Minister questions H.D. Deve Gowda's silence over Mekedatu project
Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has questioned former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda's silence over the Mekedatu project even after the people of the State supported the BJP-JD(S) coalition in the last Lok Sabha polls. Speaking at Yuva Parva, a convention organised by the youth wing of the Congress party at Channarayapatna on Sunday, Mr. Byre Gowda said that former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda had assured the people that he would get approval for the Mekedatu project within hours if the State elected a good number of JD(S)-BJP seats in the Lok Sabha polls. 'The people elected the candidates of the coalition partners. However, Mr. Deve Gowda has not spoken a word about the project even more than a year after the elections. The people of Karnataka suffered even after electing the coalition candidates,' he said. He also pointed out that despite assuring ₹5,300 crore for the Upper Bhadra project, the Central government had not released even a single rupee for the same. Besides that, the Revenue Minister added that the Centre had been attempting to impose the Hindi language on the people of Karnataka. Mr. Byre Gowda said that he, as Revenue Minister, had brought significant changes in the State. 'The people would be benefited by the changes. The party workers should work towards bringing the party back to power in the next elections,' he added. MLA for Arsikere K.M. Shivalinge Gowda said that the State had been denied its share in tax collection. 'Against ₹4.5 lakh crore collected from the State, only ₹65,000 crore had been returned. Despite the difficulties, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has been successfully leading the administration,' he said. He opined that the Congress party would be strengthened in Hassan if a person from the district was appointed Minister in charge of the district. 'We will show the power of the Congress party if a person from the district is appointed Minister in charge of the district. We should work towards winning all seven assembly constituencies in the next election,' he added. Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad, MP for Hassan Shreyas Patel, and others were present.

BJP's TN unit slams DMK over 'civic decay', terms state as den of diseases
Chennai: Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Nainar Nagenthiran launched a scathing attack on the DMK government on Sunday, accusing it of gross administrative failure and claiming that the state has been reduced to a "den of diseases" despite tall claims of progress. In a strongly worded statement, Nagenthiran criticised the DMK for boasting about a "golden era" under its governance, even as basic civic infrastructure across the state, particularly in major cities, continues to deteriorate. He pointed to the recent Swachh Survekshan 2024 rankings, the Centre's annual cleanliness survey, which placed Chennai and Madurai at the bottom of the list among cities with populations of over one million. Chennai ranked 38th and Madurai 40th out of 40 cities. "This is nothing short of a shameful reflection of the DMK's governance model. While the government celebrates a so-called Dravidian model, our cities are drowning in filth and our people are battling disease," he said. The state BJP president further questioned the efficacy of the thousands of crores of rupees reportedly spent on sanitation efforts. "If not a single city from Tamil Nadu features in the top ten cleanest cities in India, where is the outcome of these huge expenditures? What happened to the tall claims?" he asked. Highlighting rising cases of communicable diseases, deteriorating public health systems, and the crumbling condition of government hospitals, Nagenthiran said the situation on the ground paints a grim picture. He alleged rampant corruption in urban administration, claiming that civic bodies have failed to address even basic issues such as garbage clearance, sanitation, and public hygiene. "When garbage piles up in every corner, when government hospitals lack even basic facilities, and when crimes continue to surge, where exactly is the governance?" the BJP leader asked. Calling for accountability, he urged the DMK government to apologise to the people of Tamil Nadu and the nation at large for what he termed an utter failure on the governance front. The statement is part of the BJP's increasing criticism of the DMK ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, with sanitation, urban development, and health infrastructure emerging as key political battlegrounds.
