Vir Das Does Not Know Kapil Sharma 'Very Well': 'He Is So Much Of Your Punjabi...'
Vir Das has gained global recognition, but does he ever think about the fact that he hasn't gained the massive popularity in India in a way that Kapil Sharma or Zakir Khan does? In a recent interview, the Emmy award winner shared that he does not think a lot about it since his journey is very different from that of Kapil or Zakir. Das mentioned that while Kapil is a 'Punjabi everyman travelling through India", he comes from a different background altogether.
'Perhaps my journey is to have deeper interactions with a smaller group of people over a longer period of time. To do what both of them do, which is masterful in their own way, you have to be where they're from and have their own lived-in experiences. You can see Zakir grew up in classical music and poetry. And Kapil Sharma is so much your Punjabi everyman travelling through India. I'm not from anywhere. Unfortunately, I've grown up everywhere so I'll have to be who I am. If I ever tried to do that, you'd smell the inauthenticity in the material," Vir Das told SCREEN.
Asked if he ever picks up anything from Kapil or Zakir, Vir Das nodded positively. However, the stand-up comedian explained that even though he does not know Kapil 'very well", they are connected due to the comedy circuit in India.
'I like watching art that makes you angry and makes you want to be better. I go to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe once a year, where I see a random 25-year-old comedian who's written a show that I was never capable of at 25. So I'll go back and write some more. But we all support each other. I did a trial show at Soho Theatre, London last month. Zakir was in town, he popped up and watched my whole thing. I don't know Kapil very well. Of course, we've met only intermittently. But comedians on the comedy circuit in India are always WhatsApping each other and are in each other's feedback loop," he added.
On the work front, Vir Das is all set to return with his new Netflix special, 'Vir Das: Fool Volume," premiering July 18. Filmed in Mumbai, New York, and London, it showcases his signature multi-city format.
On the other hand, Kapil Sharma's The Great Indian Kapil Show 3 is also currently streaming on Netflix.

Bigg Boss OTT Fame Sana Makbul's Flight to Mumbai Makes Emergency Landing in Ahmedabad, Actress Shares Update
Actress Sana Makbul's flight from Jodhpur to Mumbai was diverted to Ahmedabad due to technical issues. She praised IndiGo staff and the pilot after safely reaching Mumbai. Actress Sana Makbul recently had a mid-air scare when her flight from Jodhpur to Mumbai was unexpectedly diverted to Ahmedabad due to technical issues. The actress, who was returning to Mumbai after a quick work trip, shared the incident on her Instagram story, reassuring fans that she was safe and thanking those who helped during the ordeal. Sana revealed that the aircraft had to make an emergency landing in Ahmedabad as a precautionary measure. Luckily, she had no check-in luggage, which allowed her to take another flight from Ahmedabad and reach Mumbai safely. However, several other passengers remained stranded at the Ahmedabad airport. Taking to social media, Sana expressed her gratitude towards the IndiGo staff for their prompt assistance in arranging her onward journey. She also appreciated the pilot of the Jodhpur-Mumbai flight for his quick and timely decision that ensured the safety of all passengers on board. 'By God's grace, everything went smoothly. I was able to catch another flight to Mumbai, and I'm thankful to the IndiGo team and the pilot for handling the situation so well," she wrote. She also added, 'I don't know what is happening with the world and I don't know what is happening with all the aircrafts, but we need a solution for this." Meanwhile, the cases of emergency landings and flights being diverted have seen a significant increase after the horrifying Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 241 lives and left the nation in a state of shock. Only one of all the passengers seated in the aircraft survived the tragic incident. Several of the most influential newsrooms in the West had already published their own – albeit fictional – reports. Amid this, filmmaker, comedian, and screenwriter Varun Grover and former pilot Gaurav Taneja, also known as Flying Beast, slammed the West's coverage of the crash. Varun Grover took to X and wrote, 'Shilling for Boeing. White man will always stand with the white man. Shame." Gaurav Taneja also expressed his frustration over the findings in the preliminary report on X. How did Western media cover the Air India crash report? The BBC, on Saturday, ran a breaking banner declaring: 'Air India Crash: Pilot cut off fuel to engines – no fault with plane." Reuters followed with its own take, noting that the fuel switches were moved but omitting the key detail that the cause remains undetermined. Grown-up parentless children need to be adopted: Actor Mandira Bedi
Kolkata, Jul 20 (PTI) Actor cum cricket show host Mandira Bedi has said that while people generally adopt infants, grown-up parentless children should also have adoptive parents. She also said the process should be made simpler to encourage people to go for adoption. Bedi, the mother of a biological and an adoptive child, said, 'For us, adoption was never the last resort." 'Even when I was dating my husband, I told him I've always wanted to have a biological child and adopt one. It wasn't just a passing thought—it was a dream I held on to from my early 20s," she said. Motherhood is not defined by blood, but by intention, love and lifelong commitment," Bedi said while speaking at a panel discussion 'Normalising and Encouraging Adoption in India'. While adoption conversations often centre around infants, Bedi turned the spotlight on a reality often overlooked —the plight of older orphaned children in the adoption system. 'So many children get missed out. Everybody wants a baby they can hold from the very beginning. But slightly older children remain in the system unseen and forgotten. Think of them too, because nobody else does," she said. Speaking from her experience as an adoptive mother, Bedi revealed that her daughter Tara was four years old when she came home. She recalled a heart-wrenching incident at the adoption agency—another young girl who had been picked for adoption thrice, only to be returned each time due to unforeseen circumstances. 'It was heartbreaking. That little girl still hadn't found a home. It's very sad when older kids get left behind. But I'm living proof—it works. You can teach them your values, nurture them with love, and they grow into everything you dreamed of," the actor said. Bedi, who has a biological son Vir Kaushal and an adopted daughter Tara Bedi Kaushal, had lost her husband Raj Kaushal in 2021. Bedi essayed acclaimed roles in TV soaps 'Aurat', 'Kyunki Saaas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi', and was a popular host of ICC Cricket World Cups and the IPL in the past. The discussion was hosted by 'Sunfeast Mom's Magic' last week. PTI SUS NN view comments First Published: July 20, 2025, 17:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
